Historical Portsmouth Number List
Historical Portsmouth Number List The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the average performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. The numbers in the PN list may not reflect the peak performance of each boat. Historical numbers are listed below and have been collated from the RYA's archive of PN lists. It should be remembered that the Portsmouth Yardstick number list has been through a number of changes and the numbers listed below have had conversion factors applied where needed. It should also be remembered that whilst all efforts are taken for PN's not to drift, relative performance of older boats may be quite different to modern classes. The numbers are given as a starting point to help clubs arrive at a fair number and if these numbers are used then they should be reviewed regularly. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. -

Skiff Regatta Featuring 49er US National Championship 29erxx US National Championship August 5-7, 2011 Columbia Gorge Racing Association, Cascade Locks, Oregon Notice of Race 1. Rules 1.1. The regatta will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of the United States Sailing Association (US SAILING), the rules of the participating Class Associations and this Notice of Race, except as any of these are changed by the Sailing Instructions or any appendices to the Sailing Instructions. 1.2. The organizing authority is the Columbia Gorge Racing Association. 2. Eligibility and Entry 2.1. The Regatta is open to I-14, 29erXX, and 49er class boats. 2.2. The 29erXX and 49er US National Championships are open to all boats that meet the obligations of the Class Rules and the governing National Authority. Participants in the 29erXX and 49er classes must be current members of their respective, recognized national class association. 2.3. Eligible boats may enter by completing the entry form on line at www.cgra.org and paying the appropriate, non-refundable entry fee as directed in the on-line registration instructions. 2.4. Crew substitution of the registered sailors is not permitted except with the permission of the Race Chairman. 2.5. All participants (or their parent/guardian is under age 18) will be required to sign and submit a waiver of liability before competing in the regatta. 3. Classification 3.1. This event is open to sailors of all classifications as described in the ISAF Regulation 22, ISAF Sailor Classification Code. 4. -

With fresh conditions almost every boat in every Division had a story to tell. Rear Commodore Rick & Roland & crews had a busy day, & “eX” with RDO Frostie as crew, also had Chris Hallett 0414866998 to retire to assist in one recovery. The BOM forecast was for 15knots, hitting up to 20 at sea, so we were all there Secretary for a fresh day. Trailers – Graeme Fleming Monos – Maurice Reynaud Rabbit was first to the Top Mark, & saw that it was good, in fact she reely liked it, & in fact became quite attached to it. As other boats approached & also Rowing Officer wanted to round, Rabbit wasn’t finished playing with it & caused some concern as Mel Nixon Kelli Coleman sailors wrestled with the problem of . -

53rd Australian Cherub Championship Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Brisbane, QLD 28th December 2015 to 3rd January 2016 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS The 53rd Australian Cherub Championships will be conducted on Waterloo Bay, Brisbane, Queensland from 28th December 2015 to 3rd January 2016 inclusive. The Organising Authority will be the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Inc. (RQYS) on behalf of the Cherub Class Owners Association of Queensland. 1. RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in: (a) The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), (b) The Prescriptions and Special Regulations of Yachting Australia, (c) The 53rd Australian Cherub Championships Sailing Instructions, (d) The Cherub National Council of Australia Constitution and By-laws (found on the national website www.cherub.org.au or by contacting the National Secretary). 2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the rigging lawn adjacent to the RQYS Sailing Office. 3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any changes to the Sailing Instructions will be posted not less than ninety (90) minutes before the next scheduled start, except that any change in the schedule of races will be posted by 1900 hours on the day before it will take effect. 4. ADVERTISING The Cherub class is classed as Category “A” in accordance with the ISAF Regulation 20.4.1. MODERATE-COST APPROACHES FOR HYDRODYNAMIC TESTING OF HIGH PERFORMANCE SAILING VESSELS A. H. Day University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland [email protected] P. Nixon University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland This study examines the relative merits of physical testing techniques which may be used in early stage design for assessment of the resistance of high-performance sailing vessels. The hull chosen as a benchmark form is a high-speed hard-chine sailing dinghy. The hull proportions and shape are typical of modern trends in skiff design, but may also be considered to be broadly similar to some high performance yacht hulls. The 4.55m hull was tested at full scale in a moderate size towing tank, at 1:2.5 scale in the same tank, and at full-scale by towing on open water. Results show the mean discrepancy in the measured resistance between the open water towing and the full-scale tank test is around 4%. The challenges of full-scale open-water testing are discussed and several improvements identified for future work. Comparison of the full-scale results suggests that blockage and depth correction for the full-scale hull in the tank do not present a substantial problem for subcritical speeds. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. The RYA list is not definitive and clubs should adjust where necessary.
