  • Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

  • Moderate-Cost Approaches for Hydrodynamic Testing of High Performance Sailing Vessels
MODERATE-COST APPROACHES FOR HYDRODYNAMIC TESTING OF HIGH PERFORMANCE SAILING VESSELS A. H. Day University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland [email protected] P. Cameron University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland E. Nixon University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland This study examines the relative merits of physical testing techniques which may be used in early stage design for assessment of the resistance of high-performance sailing vessels. The hull chosen as a benchmark form is a high-speed hard-chine sailing dinghy. The hull proportions and shape are typical of modern trends in skiff design, but may also be considered to be broadly similar to some high performance yacht hulls. The 4.55m hull was tested at full scale in a moderate size towing tank, at 1:2.5 scale in the same tank, and at full-scale by towing on open water. Results show the mean discrepancy in the measured resistance between the open water towing and the full-scale tank test is around 4%. The challenges of full-scale open-water testing are discussed and several improvements identified for future work. Comparison of the full-scale results suggests that blockage and depth correction for the full-scale hull in the tank do not present a substantial problem for subcritical speeds. Larger discrepancies were found between resistance from the model scale and the full scale tank tests at higher speeds; it was speculated that these discrepancies relate to the differences in the detailed geometry of the model and full-scale boat, particularly in the region of the chines. 1 INTRODUCTION hull form is typical of a modern skiff form with an overall length of 4.55m, a single chine, and relatively flat Large-scale tank testing at high speeds inevitably sections between the keel and chine and between the requires the use of a large, and hence costly, towing tank, chine and deck edge.

  • MSCA Annual Survey 2019
2020 MSCA Annual Survey Report International Musto Skiff Class Association ABOUT THE MUSTO SKIFF CLASS The Musto Skiff Class Association (MSCA) The Musto Skiff is a high-performance single-handed trapeze dinghy that is great fun to sail with a large community of sailors representing over 28 countries. The Musto Skiff Class Association (MSCA) is run by the members for the members. As a World Sailing International Class, the MSCA hosts annual World Championships in addition to supporting local class associations who host National Regattas, Open Meetings and training events throughout the year. The class benefits from long-term partnerships with international sponsors and partners including Musto, Ovington Boats Ltd, Harken, Hyde Sails, Selden Masts, and ACO Ltd. www.mustoskiff.com Photo credit: Bernardi Bibiloni Bigas, 2017 (www.bernardibibiloni.com) ABOUT THIS SURVEY The Survey Purpose The 2020 MSCA Annual Survey is created by the Musto Skiff Class Association (MSCA) International Committee, in partnership with the class boat builder and partner, Ovington Boats Ltd. The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback from class members and the wider sailing community on all Musto Skiff activities. This includes feedback on the boat experience, training, organised events, class marketing activities, sponsors and more. In each survey, MSCA members also have the opportunity to vote for International Committee Members and Country Representatives, as well as voting on proposed ideas for the future growth and longevity of the class. The feedback is used to ensure the successful planning and delivery of future events. It also helps the International Committee to understand what members want from the class association, and how the class can position itself to attract new and talented sailors.

  • • Edition 5 • April 2011 Spring Has Finally Sprung and We Have an Abundance of Exciting Things Planned for This Year at TBYC!
www.tbyc.org • Edition 5 • April 2011 Spring has finally sprung and we have an abundance of exciting things planned for this year at TBYC! Firstly the Summer Glitter Ball on June 4th has had a huge response, and 170 of you have bought tickets - making it a massive sellout event! So ladies and gentlemen, have your sequins, diamonds and sparkles at the ready for what is guaranteed to be a fantastic night. April will be a busy month, not only for TBYC but also London, with the Royal Wedding on April 29th. We are planning a big Royal Wedding Party on that night with a red, white and blue “Back To The 80's” theme, so don't miss out on one of the biggest parties of the year! Not forgetting the Easter weekend hog roast on Sunday April 24th. Keep your eyes peeled for tickets and ticket discounts for those who buy them for both events. These will be on posters around the club and on the website. Let us know if you have been to any great events elsewhere and would like to see them at TBYC, whether it be a casino night, a cocktail party or beer tasting. Let us know - we would love to have your great ideas! Finally, we are going to start offering a combined ticket booking discount for certain events, like the hog roast and Royal Wedding party, and people who attend the Christmas party will receive a discount on tickets for New Year’s Eve. We hope this will encourage more ticket buying and bookings! Kylie Hello, I would like to introduce myself to you.
