1 Southern California Yachting Association Attention One Design/ PHRF/Cruisers/RC Model Boaters/ Predicted Log and Dinghy Racers Enter the 91st Midwinter Regatta 2020 February 8 and 9 or February 15 and 16, 2020 The two-weekend format, stretching from Morro Bay to Baja California and points east, will again enable host yacht clubs to select the best fit for racers wishing to participate in this unique event. This yachting tradition is a chance to test your skills against the best skippers on the West Coast or provide an opportunity to experience the thrill of competitive racing for the first time. The SCYA Midwinter Regatta, the nation's largest sailing competition, offers 26 venues, attracts more than 600 competing boats, 100 classes and more than 2,500 sailors. Our Midwinter Committee has been working closely with SCYA, the regatta's commercial sponsors and participating host clubs to ensure everyone has a great time. Each hosting yacht club showcases what they have to offer the sailing community. The Southern California Yachting Association, now in its 99th year of service, continues to facilitate member club communications, sponsors a variety of boat safety seminars, club management training, honor and service awards and much more. 90 years of successful past Midwinter venues tell the story about this unique event. (619) 757-3915 2 Southern California Yachting Association Dear SCYA Midwinter Regatta Participants: Welcome, thank you for being part of SCYA’s 91st Midwinter Regatta, which is the largest regatta in the nation encompassing 26 hosted venues participating in two weekends with over 600 competing boats and more than 2,500 sailors. This year’s Midwinter Regatta promises to be one of the best with the expected addition of invited classes, including one-design, PHRF, Cruisers, Multi-hulls, dinghies, remote control model boats, Predicted Log, RS-Tera and various sponsors, which will only enhance the boating and racing experience to all those involved. Online Registration on SCYA’s website: For Midwinter 2020, we offer online registration at www.scyamidwinterregatta.org for all host club venues. Simply click on “2020 Regatta Information” which takes you to a list of the host club venues. Click on the venue of your choice, fill out the registration form and complete your entry using the online payment feature. Your selected host club will have access to your registration data. Check back with your host club via its site on www.scyamidwinterregatta.org for sailing instructions, all other race documents and results. For paper entries, please mail the Entry Form which follows to SCYA or directly to your host club along with your check made payable to “SCYA”. The 2020 Midwinter Regatta is being run once again on two different weekends, the first being the 8th and the 9th and the second will be the 15th and the 16th of February. This allows the various clubs to pick the best dates to increase participation in their invited classes, to add classes to their schedule and allow the best racers of different classes to participate in multiple races over the two weekends. This year, race participation will be enhanced by the addition of our disabled sailors racing alongside able-bodied sailors in various races and in certain of our venues. Funds generated by this event help support SCYA in their continuing contributions to our racing community in the Southwest corner of our great nation. Facilitating member club communications, sponsoring a variety of boat safety seminars, club management training, honor and service awards and much more. Cell 310-486-2367 3 91st SCYA MIDWINTER REGATTA NOTICE OF RACE February 8 and 9, 2020 & February 15 and 16, 2020* 1.0 RULES The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (“RRS”). 2.0 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 2.1 Each entrant must be a member of a yacht club or sailing association belonging to the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA), US SAILING, the Southern California Cruiser Association (SCCA), or the American Model Yacht Association (ACMYA) or a guest of the host venue. In select non-spinnaker classes, the Host Venue may waive this requirement and accept other entries. Contact the Host Venue for further information. 2.2 Participating classes are listed in this Notice and include handicap, one-design, model boats and Predicted Log. Classes not listed may apply to the SCYA Midwinter Chairman for assignment to a host club. Three entries are required to establish a class. All entrants must be current members of the fleet in which they race, unless noted in the Yacht Club’s Sailing Instructions. Out of the area boats may obtain a guest handicap certificate from PHRF of Southern California by calling (562) 438-6712. 2.3 Boats competing in this regatta shall use the ratings applicable to the host yacht club’s venue where they race. 2.4 Entries and payments should, preferably, be submitted on-line at SCYA’s event site, www.scyamidwinterregatta.org by clicking on the “2020 Regatta Information” tab and then selecting your desired venue from the list displayed. Then, please fill out your registration form and pay on-line. Your registration information will be made available to your host club for race management purposes. Please check back periodically on www.scyamidwinterregatta.org under your host club’s listing for all further race documents and updates. You may also complete and mail the Entry Form with payment to: SCYA, 5855 Naples Plaza, Suite 211, Long Beach, CA 90803-5080 or deliver same directly to your host yacht club before the entry deadline specified by that club.     36R CLASS RATING RULES The 36R (restricted) class is the oldest of the freesail classes sailed at SFMYC. An English class, originally adopted by the Model Yachting Association of Great Britain (MYA- GB) in 1929, and revised several times, it remains an active class administered by the MYA- GB. The SFMYC has not made any changes to the MYA-GB rules. The 36R class is a developmental class with a very simple basis: the boat must fit within a 37” x 11” x 9” box. If it fits in the box, it qualifies. There are no rules limiting hull shape, type or materials; no limits to displacement either minimum or maximum; no restrictions as to type of rig or sail area. Keels and rudders may be removable to facilitate easy packaging for transport, but keels may not be movable while sailing. More than one suite of sails is allowed. Spars are not included in the box measurement, and this includes bowsprits, if fitted. Removable fittings are also not included in the box measurement, and steering vanes are typically mounted on a bracket hung off the transom. It is important to note that draft is not specified: the maximum depth includes the freeboard, from the top of the deck to the bottom of the keel. The rules are for both freesail and radio controlled boats, however there is no 36R radio control fleet at the San Francisco Model Yacht Club.     www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

ORGANIZING AUTHORITY Hellenic Sailing Federation. 2. RULES The event will be governed by : o The Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020 (World sailing). o The prescriptions of the Hellenic National Authority will not apply, except N1: RRS 40 (PFD). All competitors, race officials and support personnel shall be required to wear an adequate personal floatation device at all times while afloat. o The National Authority prescriptions 2 and 3 shall apply for Greeks competing at the Athens International Sailing Week o The Class rules (unless otherwise modified by this Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions). o The HSF 2019 racing programme concerning National Championships. o This Notice of Race. o The Sailing Instructions. o If there is a conflict between a rule in the Notice of Race and a rule in the Sailing Instructions, the rule in the Sailing Instructions shall take precedence. This changes RRS 63.7. o If there is a conflict between languages the English text shall take precedence. 3. ADVERTISING The World Sailing Advertising Code, Regulation 20 shall apply. Boats may be required to display a bow number and advertisement of the event sponsor on either side on the forward 25% of the hull. Sailboards may be required to display such number and advertising on either side of the sail above the wishbone. Boats authorized to have advertising must present the permission of their National Authority.

Such assistance should be a key service to our members and therefore we are instigating access through a special link on the AYH website. Many of us will have started research in yacht club records and club libraries, which are often haphazard and incomplete. We have now started the process of listing significant yachting research resources with their locations, distinctive features, and comments on how accessible they are, and we invite our members to tell us about their Half-model of Peggy Bawn, G.L.     LA LARGA- THE OFFSHORE RACE OF PALMAVELA 22ND TO 26TH OF OCTOBER, 2021 17TH REGATTA PALMAVELA 27TH TO 31ST OF OCTOBER, 2021 NOTICE OF RACE 1 ORGANIZATION The events’ Organising Authority (OA) will be the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP), supported by the Real Federacion Española de Vela (RFEV) with the institutional support of the Balearic Islands Government, Palma Town Hall, with further support of the Federación Balear de Vela, Club Nautic S’Arenal, ARAM (Mediterranean Offshore Sailor’s Association) and the Balearic Islands Port Authority. The event is included in the IMA 2021 Racing Calendar and the PalmaVela regatta is a qualifying event for the IMA Mediterranean Inshore Challenge, a qualifying regatta for ORC classes in the Circuito Mediterráneo de Vela and is the Copa de España for the Dragon Class. 2 VENUE AND DATES La Larga-The Offshore Race of Palmavela will be held in waters of the Balearic archipelago from the 22nd to the 26th of October, 2021 and the 17th edition of the PALMAVELA Regatta will be held in the waters of the Bay of Palma from the 27th to the 31st October, 2021. 3 RULES 3.1 The event will be governed by the following rules: a) Racing Rules of Sailing as defined in the WORLD SAILING 2021-2024 RRS. b) The RFEV prescriptions available on: https://www.rfev.es/uploaded_files/Document_3219_20210101121551_es.pdf c) SY Appendix of the RRS. d) The RRS 90.3 (e)(3) applies.
