This program celebrates the winners and participants from last year’s Nantucket Race Week and the Opera House Cup Regatta and gives you everything you need to know about this year’s racing and social events. We are excited to welcome all sailors in the Nantucket community to join us for our inaugural Harbor Rendezvous on Sunday, August 12th. We are also pleased to welcome all our competitors, including young Opti and 420 racers; lasers, Hobies and boarders; the local one design fleets; the IOD Celebrity Invitational guest tacticians and amateur teams; and the big boat regatta competitors ranging from Alerions and Wianno Seniors to schooners and majestic classic yachts. Don’t forget that you can go aboard and admire some of these beautiful classics up close, when they will be on display to the public for the 5th Classic Yacht Exhibition on Saturday, August 18th.

You will also learn about Nantucket Community Sailing, whose mission is to provide Nantucket youth with affordable access to sailing with scholarships and free community outreach programs. Nantucket Race Week is the major fundraiser for NCS, and your participation in Nantucket Race Week helps NCS fund these initiatives. 15 Nantucket Race Week 2018 Clean Regatta

antucket Race Week is proud to participate for the 10th year in the Sailor for the Sea’s Clean Regatta program. We are expecting to achieve Gold-level recognition for the 9th year. Some Nof our Clean Regatta actions include: • No discharge of treated or untreated sewage or black water in harbor areas or no-discharge zones around Nantucket. • No overboard discharge of trash or littering at shore facilities (e.g. rigging tape, paper, soda cans). • Follow Nantucket’s trash and recycling guidelines: Trash must be in clear plastic or biodegradable bags. All paper, glass, metal and plastic must be recycled and placed in separate containers. • Reduce waste by using refillable water bottles and compostable paper products. • Use green cleaning and maintenance products, and copper/cuprous oxide-free bottom paint. • Reduce the impact of oils spills from motorized vessels by carrying at least one bilge sponge and fuel spill pad. • Participate in Nantucket’s Stop the Straw campaign. • Use of bicycles and public transportation. Nantucket Race Week 2018 16 Nantucket Clean Harbor Award Presented by Carlin Contracting Company NCS makes this award to heighten public awareness of the pressures on harbor water quality, the importance of restoring the quality of our harbor’s waters and to encourage stewardship of this resource. This award is presented to a person or organization that has engaged in activities that not only improve Nantucket harbor’s water quality, but also provides a model for action by other organizations and individuals. The 2017 award was presented to Dave Fronzuto, Town of Nantucket Emergency Management Coordinator. Dave was recognized for his work to rebuild the jetties at the mouth of Nantucket Harbor, which not only improves safety for mariners but also improves water quality Photo by Alice Breed within Nantucket Harbor due to the increased water flow. The 2018 Clean Harbor award will be presented at the Family BBQ at Great Harbor Yacht Club on Monday, August 13 at approximately 7:00pm.

Nantucket Race Week 2018 32 Classic Yacht Exhibition

he fifth annual Classic Yacht Exhibition will be held in the Nantucket Boat Basin on Saturday, August 18th Tfrom 5:30pm to 8:00pm. The yachts in the Classic Yacht Exhibition participate by invitation only, since the event is intended to recognize some of the finest and most interesting yachts that compete in the Opera House Cup. This will be a very special opportunity for guests to go aboard and see the beautiful classic yachts up close. Participants will receive a booklet describing each of the yachts on display, and each yacht owner will receive a commemorative plaque. The yachts will be on display at the end of the Straight Wharf dock. We ask our guests to follow any rules the owners have for boarding their yachts – i.e. no shoes, no food or drink, and a limited number of visitors at a time. Dean Miller from Fusion of Flavor will be providing hors d’oeuvres and Photo by Alice Breed cocktails for the yacht owners and our guests. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased on the docks. Thank you to the boat captains and the Nantucket Boat Basin for making this event possible.
