Design of the Courageous Mast Designers’ Forum By Arvel Gentry YACHTING Magazine, February 1975 (Arvel Gentry is a research aerodynamicist at the Douglas Aircraft Co., in Long Beach, Cal., and has long had a special fascination for sailboat aerodynamics, a subject with which he has had extensive practical experience on his successful Ranger 23 “Kittiwake.” His non-sailing weekends are spent with such December 1999 design projects as a sailing performance recorder for the new 79' ketch “Kialoa III” and mast shapes for ocean racers and 12-meters. 12 METRE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Barby MacGowan, Media Pro International, +1 (401) 849-0220 or SallyAnne Santos, ITMA, +1 (401) 847-0112 A Sailing Spectacle Like No Other 12 Metre World Championship Set for Newport in July NEWPORT, RI (November 6, 2018) – With a little over eight months to go, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) America’s Fleet and the 12 Metre Yacht Club are gearing up for the largest-ever gathering of historic 12 Metre yachts in the U.S. at the 2019 12 Metre World Championship. Scheduled for July 8-13, the regatta will host 24 teams from seven countries, and the fleet will include Italian Patrizio Bertelli’s US-12 Nyala, which is the defending 12 Metre World Champion, and five yachts that have successfully defended the America’s Cup: US-16 Columbia (1958), US-17 Weatherly (1962), US-22 Intrepid(1967 & 1970), US-26 Courageous (1974 & 1977) and US-30 Freedom (1980). 12 Metres racing in Barcelona during the 2014 12 Metre World Championship. The Goddard Papers: The History of a Nineteenth-Century Shipbuilder and Merchant Frances Brennan On 30 December 1833, a young man, who had apprenticed at his father’s side, affixed his signature to a Partnership Agreement by which the firm of William Goddard and Son was founded. With an investment of only five thousand dollars, William Warren Goddard stepped into the world of shipbuilding and mercantile trade in the Port of Boston. The elder Goddard brought to the partnership three extremely seaworthy vessels; namely, the ship AMERICA, the ship MOUNT VERNON, and the Brig CONGRESS. It was also part of the Agreement that he would supply additional cash, as required, and thereafter devote such time and attention to this new endeavor as he would find convenient. William W. Goddard agreed to apply his whole time and ability to the business of the firm.1 By this mutual agreement the career of one was diminishing, while that of the other had just begun. Within two years his father was dead, and William W. Goddard, who was then twenty-three years of age, became the sole owner of the firm. The success of most men in the maritime industry, in the years when sail dominated the seas, was either as builder, captain, or merchant. William W. Goddard had the brilliance of the builder, and the astuteness of the merchant, and went on to excel in both. His fame as a builder is best evidenced by recounting the essence of an article published on 15 April 1868 in The Boston Traveller, in which two of his ships, HARRIOT ERVING and CRUSADER, were included as the remarkable ships of the Port of Boston: Designed and built by W.W.Goddard . -

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS 2011 ANNUAL REPORT Letter to our Goals Members Dear Member, 2011 was an exceptional year for US Sailing, and we would like to start by thanking you for your ongoing support and confidence in our organization. You enable us to deliver the programs that are important to our sport, and inspire us to continually strive to improve sailors’ experiences on the water. Last year we committed to focus on the future, challenge the status quo and support the 21st century sailor by enhancing our programs, modernizing our processes and expanding support for organizations. We’ve made progress. We increased the number of Certified Instructors and Race Officials, and completely revamped the Level 1 Instructor program and student materials. We developed new services and tools to support PHRF fleets. Following the successful Yacht Club Summit, we launched a series of local conferences, and are supporting regional yacht club summits. The US Sailing Road Show stopped at 50 clubs and sailing centers, inspiring over 17,000 young sailors. We further enhanced our Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) education program in preparation for a national rollout. We extended our commitment to safety with our investigations of last summer’s sailing tragedies. Promote Participation, Education, Raise Standards and Expand Clubs across the country are reviewing these reports and recommendations, and implementing new practices to Opportunity and Safety Competitive Sailing in the US reduce accidents in the future. “SSA is proud of its long history offering world class “Some say sailing is declining.
