The Junk Rig Glossary (JRG) Version 20 APR 2016 Welcome to the Junk Rig Glossary! The Junk Rig Glossary (JRG) is a Member Project of the Junk Rig Association, initiated by Bruce Weller who, as a then new member, found that he needed a junk 'dictionary’. The aim is to create a comprehensive and fully inclusive glossary of all terms pertaining to junk rig, its implementation and characteristics. It is intended to benefit all who are interested in junk rig, its history and on-going development. A goal of the JRG Project is to encourage a standard vocabulary to assist clarity of expression and understanding. Thus, where competing terms are in common use, one has generally been selected as standard (please see Glossary Conventions: Standard Versus Non-Standard Terms, below) This is in no way intended to impugn non-standard terms or those who favour them. Standard usage is voluntary, and such designations are wide open to review and change. Where possible, terminology established by Hasler and McLeod in Practical Junk Rig has been preferred. Where innovators have developed a planform and associated rigging, their terminology for innovative features is preferred. Otherwise, standards are educed, insofar as possible, from common usage in other publications and online discussion. Your participation in JRG content is warmly welcomed. Edition number of Signed by Richard Bennett Date RICHARD BENNETT OAM 1 PROLOGUE People often tell me how lucky I am to have made a living doing something I love so much. I agree with them. I do love my work. But neither my profession, nor my career, has anything to do with luck. My life, and my mindset, changed forever the day, as a boy, I was taken out to Hartz Mountain. From the summit, I saw a magical landscape that most Tasmanians didn’t know existed. For me, that moment started an obsession with wild places, and a desire to capture the drama they evoke on film. To the west, the magnificent jagged silhouette of Federation Peak dominated the skyline, and to the south, Precipitous Bluff rose sheer for 4000 feet out of the valley. Beyond that lay the south-west coast. I started bushwalking regularly after that, and bought my first camera. In 1965, I attended mountaineering school at Mount Cook on the Tasman Glacier, and in 1969, I was selected to travel to Peru as a member of Australia’s first Andean Expedition. The hardships and successes of the Andean Expedition taught me that I could achieve anything that I wanted. -

NOTICE OF RACE 2021 JJ GILTINAN 18ft SKIFF CHAMPIONSHIP Version 1.2 Organising Authority: The Australian 18 Footers League. 1 RULES All races will be governed by the current versions of: (a)The rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024 (RRS) of World Sailing. (b) The Australian 18 Foot Class rules (c) The Marine Safety (General) Regulation 2016 (d) If there is conflict between languages the English text will take precedence (e) Where conflict occurs, the 2021 J.J. Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship Sailing Instructions shall take precedence. 2 ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY The regatta is an invitation only event with applications coming from all League design skiffs on the international register. Skiffs may apply to enter the 2021 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship by completing and signing the ‘Entry Form’ which is located on the Australian 18 Footers League website – www.18footers.com.au/18-footers-sailing/documents/ Entry Forms must be lodged, together with the prescribed entry fee, prior to the skiff being accepted as a starter in the regatta. Also an image of the mainsail logo of the skiff must be included. 3 FEES An entry fee of : $AUD 750 (seven hundred and fifty dollars Australian currency) if paid by 4/03/2021 or $AUD 850 (eight hundred and fifty dollars Australian currency) if paid after 4/03/21 is applicable to each skiff. This fee is due and payable prior to the skiff being declared a starter in any race listed in the ‘Schedule of Races’. Dear Reader What does it mean to be a global company? There are many ways of defining this, and many apply to Gurit: We not only serve attrac- tive global markets but are also locally present in many different areas of the world. Today, more than half of our colleagues work at Gurit production sites in Asia. This is remarkable, especially consid- ering that it was just four years ago that we opened the first fac- tory in China. This summer we had the great pleasure of officially inaugurating a quantum-leap expansion at our Tooling equipment factory in Taicang: Red Maple has added a whole new manufacturing cam- pus allowing for the manufacture of next-generation blade moulds for wind turbines of up to 7 MW. This new set–up allows us to take the Tooling business to a global level, selling an increasing number of moulds to customers in and outside of China. In addition, we have also extended our core material kitting capabilities in Tianjin where preparations are now under way for the installation of Gurit’s first PET extruder to manufacture our new PET based fam- ily of structural core materials. Being – or going – global is also true for Marine: We have success- fully extended our marketing reach by targeting new international boat building markets in the Mediterranean and the Middle East and through the international roll out of the B3 SmartPac Engineer- ing and Materials package across the globe. -

A man’s name may appear on a title-page, but that tells only one half of the story. It is the purpose of this prefatory note to tell the other half. When I agreed to compile a bibliography of The Book Club of California publications, with an accompanying history of the Club, I thought I was in for a fairly easy job. I understood that the archives were in existence and, of course, on the shelves at headquarters were complete files of Club books, keepsakes, Quarterly News-Letters, etc. It should be simple, merely a matter of collating and checking and trying to make of a bibliography something more than a catalogue of titles. How wrong can a person be? To begin with, it must be understood that for many years the Club was run by amateurs, devoted, splendid citizens who attended monthly board meetings and when it was necessary gave generously of their time and energies for the welfare of the Club. But they were still amateurs, and so long as the organization was not in danger of collapse or actual decease they were content to let things jog along.
