Halwachs The Roma, Sinti, Calè and many other European population groups who are collectively referred to by the mostly pejorative term “gypsies” refer to their language as Romani, Romanes or romani čhib. Linguistic-genetically it is a New Indo-Aryan language and as such belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. As an Indo-Aryan diaspora language which occurs only outside the Indian subcontinent, Romani has been spoken in Europe since the Middle Ages and today forms an integral part of European linguistic diversity. The first factsheet addresses the genetic and historical aspects of Romani as indicated. Four further factsheets cover the individual linguistic structural levels: lexis, phonology, morphology and syntax. This is followed by a detailed discussion of dialectology and a final presentation of the socio-linguistic situation of Romani. 1_ ROMANI: AN INDO-ARYAN LANGUAGE OF EUROPE deals with the genetic affiliation and with the history of science and linguistics of Romani and Romani linguistics. 2_ WORDS discusses the Romani lexicon which is divided into two layers: Recent loanwords from European languages are opposed by the so-called pre-European inherited lexicon. The latter allowed researchers to trace the migration route of the Roma from India to Europe. 3_ SOUNDS describes the phonology of Romani, which includes a discussion of typical Indo-Aryan sounds and of variety- specific European contact phenomena. The Polish Journal of the Arts and Culture Nr 14 (2/2015) / ARTICLE JAN BAZYLI KLAKLA* (Jagiellonian University) The Attitudes Towards the Customary Law Within Roma Groups in Central Europe ABSTRACT The community of Romani people is scattered around Europe. On our continent it is one of the last examples of a social group living basically outside the law. The normative sys- tem that is responsible for the regulation of a social order is, instead of law, the customary law – a set of norms called Romanipen or Romaniye. Due to the lack of a common Romani territory and the lack of a written tradition, the Romani customary law has to operate in a very specific context and serve very specific purposes in order to preserve their culture. In my paper I try to answer three essential questions: (1) what are the characteristics of the Romani customary law as a normative system and which concepts are the key ones? (2) What is the relationship between Roma people and their customary law and what are the consequences of such a relationship in the context of the state law? (3) What is the relation between the Romani customary law and the state law? Firstly, I introduce the main features and foundations of the Romani customary law and its key concepts. A special consideration be given to the concepts of taboo and polluting and their importance for the Roma community and for the communication with the society of a state that they live in. Secondly, I discuss a specific relation that links the Roma people with their customary law. -

Roma Women Research
Report conducted by: Report on Poland AN INITIATIVE OF ROMA WOMEN RESEARCH With the financial support of the Council of Europe through a financial contribution from the Government of Finland This research was commissioned by Radomskie Stowarzyszenie Romów “Romano Waśt” to support a broader research: “ROMA WOMEN RESEARCH”, which is coordinated by Federación Nacional de Asociaciones de Mujeres Gitanas KAMIRA and subsidized by the Council of Europe through a financial contribution from the Government of Finland. ABSTRACT Roma women from five different countries (Finland, Poland, Ukraine, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Spain) have been consulted about the following topics: education, employment, health, generational changes, expectations, gender- based violence, discrimination and participation. Women belonged to three segments of population by ages (17-30; 35-45; 45 and older) with the aim of compare the results obtained between the different ages groups (differences found among the countries will be analysed in a different report). A university or research centre from each of the participating countries has been collaborating for getting the most rigorous report- diagnosis. This qualitative research have adopted a Critical Communicative Methodology approach advised by the CREA Institute (Community of Research on Excellence for All; University of Barcelona), which is based on dialog, reflection and self-reflection (criticism) and intersubjectivity (communicative) placing women at an equal plane with researchers. This report contains the results of Poland. Roma/Gypsies in Poland. Ethnic Identity, group differences, demographic characteristic, short history and elements of Culture1 Łukasz Kwadrans Abstract Romanis/Gypsies are the most numerous ethnic minorities in Europe. There are 6 – 12 million Gypsies dispersed around Europe with two-thirds living in Central and Eastern Europe. It is impossible to eliminate deep-rooted prejudice and racial stereotypes without acquiring rudimentary knowledge about the Romani community, their history, ethnic identity, struc- ture, proper names, population, and social situation. The name „Gypsy“ will be used here interchangeably with ethnonym „Roma“ despite its derogatory connotation (Mirga, Mróz 1994, pp. 266-267; Ficowski, 1965). This text presents the basic infor- mation about Roma People/Gypsies in Poland. Key words Roma, Gypsies, Poland, ethnic identity, history, culture, social situation Ethnic Identity It is crucial that Roma lack a collective ethnic identity which only now is being reinforced by a small group of Gypsy elite. Their ethnic identi- ty relates mainly to the non- Gypsies (Gadje). The name gadjo, n.sing. (gadje n. pl.) – non-Gypsy (Mirga, Mróz 1994, 263-271, Hancock 1992). Their ethnic boundary, based on the above dichotomy is additionally regulated by Gypsy purity laws.
