I will argue that this interaction is strongly influenced by these peoples’ engagement with Pentecostalism and Charismatic Christianity and nationality. Within the frame of this study, Finnish Roma refers to Finnish Kale, a distinctive group somewhat similar to the sinti, a branch of the European Roma population who live mostly in German-speaking countries. Finnish Kale have settled in Finland for more than 500 years: they are Finnish citizens and speak Finnish in addition to a local dialect of Romani. The East European Roma in Finland include representatives of different Roma groups, with different self-appellations, who have recently migrated to Finland from former socialist states of Europe, mostly Bulgaria and Romania, or who repeatedly visit Finland from those former socialist states. Pentecostal Finnish Kale have been in contact with East European Roma since the historic fall of the “Iron Curtain” in 1989 and the opening of the borders of the former Socialist European bloc countries to those European countries considered to be in the ‘Western’ bloc. The nature of that relationship changed at the beginning of 2007, when Bulgaria and Romania entered the EU and their citizens were able to visit and look for employment in Finland. This is the first extensive anthropological study on the interaction of different Roma groups in Finland and in general. The subject is interesting because it provides an opportunity to examine the interplay of different forms of identity – ethnic, religious and national. The research is based on an ethnographic description of encounters between Finnish and Eastern European Roma in Finland that took place over a period of 14 months of intensive fieldwork (2014-2015), supported by the insights and understanding gained through more than 20 years of personal friendship with Finnish and Bulgarian Roma, as well as one and a half years of social work amongst Finnish Kale. The theoretical frame is provided by research literature on Roma in the fields of anthropology and ethnology as well as anthropological studies on ethnicity, ethnic identity, Pentecostalism and Charismatic Christianity as well as nationality. My argument is that the social dynamics between nationality, ethnicity and religious identification determines the particular kind of sense of belonging that Roma in Helsinki have, which in turn affects the type of relation members of different Roma groups feel towards one another. Through exploring multiple everyday interactions between this groups, I have been able to show that religious belonging is the key factor that draws different groups together, due to the mutual trust and obligation that such belonging entails.     Development of form and function in a case system with layers: Tocharian and Romani compared1 Gerd Carling 0 Introduction In this article, I will look at the formal and functional organization of the case systems in Tocharian A and B and Romani, two languages that are in a similar state-of-change when it comes to the restructuralization of a former inflectional system into a so-called system with layers. By layers is meant that cases are constructed by using different principles, primarily inflectional (layer I) and secondarily agglutinative (layer II, by using layer I as a basis). It draws on the discussion in Matras (2002, chapter 7) while taking into consideration more recent studies. In particular, we draw on the wealth of morpho- syntactic data that have since become available via the Romani Morpho-Syntax (RMS) database.1 The RMS data are based on responses to the Romani Morpho-Syntax questionnaire recorded from Romani speaking communities across Europe and beyond. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

Bodiroga, 2013 ii Abstract This thesis examines a dialogue between two texts meant to contribute to the mythistory (Aleksić, 2007) and what I term the storied context of the second Yugoslav Experiment (1945-1995). From within the lens of my own diasporic context, I juxtapose Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina (1945/1959), published at the nation’s outset, against Emir Kusturica’s film Underground (1995), produced at Yugoslavia’s failing end. I analyze the thematic connections and ideological constraints to the conversation between these two texts by establishing the parameters of both Kusturica’s successful and unsuccessful attempts to engage Andrić’s novel. A template for the continued overlaying of “discrepant voices” (Said, 1993) is revealed for further examination both backward into the mythistories of the Southwest Slavs of the Balkans and forward into the construction of storied contexts in the former Yugoslav states. It also challenges, from a theoretical perspective, conceptions of relationships between music and discourses of ‘race’. These fieldwork experiences compelled me to explore music and ideas of ‘race’ through discourses of diaspora in order to assist in conceptualising and interpreting Romani music making in Ostrava. The vast majority of Roma in Ostrava are post-World War II emigres or descendants of emigres from East Slovakia. In contemporary Ostrava, most Roma live on the socio­ economic margins and are most often regarded as a separate ‘race’ with a separate culture from the dominant population.

In writing their memories in German, these Romani writers ended the ‘muteness’ previously surrounding their own experiences of persecution in the Third Reich and demanded an end to the official silence regarding the Romani Holocaust in their home countries. The thesis aims to explore how the writing of these narratives works to create a space for Romani memories within German language written tradition and to assert a more positive Romani identity and space for this identity in their homelands.

    ADVISORY COUNCIL ON YOUTH (CCJ) 8 April 2021 English only International Roma Day On International Roma Day, 8 April, the Advisory Council on Youth sends its warm wishes to Roma and Travellers1 communities across Europe. International Roma Day recognises and celebrates Romani history and culture but also pays tribute to the work and great achievements of the Roma Movement and Romani activists over the decades. Fifty years ago, on this day, the Roma Movement held the First World Romani Congress in Orpington, England (UK). The Congress has become a part of Roma history, several significant decisions were made, which have had an identity-forming impact on Roma communities, such as the adoption of the song “Gelem, Gelem” as the official Romani anthem and the creation of a common flag. The choice of the terms “Rom” and “Romani” as official designations was to eliminate old prejudices and help create a new self-confidence.2 The Advisory Council on Youth welcomes the recently adopted Recommendation CM/Rec(2020)2 on the inclusion of the history of Roma and/or Travellers in school curricula and teaching materials. The recommendation represents a timely agreement among the member states, that Romani history is part of European and national histories and provides an opportunity, for the marginalised Roma communities, to nurture their own culture and values in an institutionalised system. The Advisory Council on Youth invites the Council of Europe member states to commit to the implementation of this recommendation, and to the provision of adequate support to all relevant stakeholders in this process. Structural discrimination against Roma persists, however, rendering it extremely difficult for young Roma to access their rights, including social and civic rights.
