The Fuau community initiated the project on which the dissertation is based, and has been actively involved all along. Yulianus Wau (Yuli) first invited me to the community in 2014, and continues to be a primary impetus for the language documentation project. He organizes meetings, thinks of various types of speech to record, and organizes recording sessions with other speakers. Other key community leaders who have helped in many ways are Bastian Guani and Elus Wau. All three of these individuals also allowed themselves to be recorded in a variety of contexts. During writing, Yuli and his son Otis have consistently been available for questions from afar via WhatsApp. Many questions about the Abawiri language have been cleared up thanks to their prompt and thorough replies to my inquiries. Even an activity as isolating as the writing of a dissertation cannot be completed without a community of support. My advisor Bernard Comrie has consistently provided careful and thorough advice on all aspects of fieldwork, analysis, and writing. I am particularly grateful for his help through several unforeseen logistical challenges I faced during the creation of this dissertation. Each of the other committee members – Marianne Mithun, Eric W. Campbell, and Lourens de Vries – provided unique and important feedback that improved the dissertation in many ways. The whole committee has had to work remotely as I finished the dissertation during the COVID-19 pandemic.     Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates.

It explains what constitutes a valid family, what amount and kinds of documentary data are sufficient, when a language is considered extinct, and more. It is hoped that the survey will be useful in setting priorities for documenta- tion fieldwork, in particular for those documentation efforts whose underlying goal is to understand linguistic diversity. 1. InTroducTIon. There are several legitimate reasons for pursuing language documen- tation (cf. Krauss 2007 for a fuller discussion).1 Perhaps the most important reason is for the benefit of the speaker community itself (see Voort 2007 for some clear examples). Another reason is that it contributes to linguistic theory: if we understand the limits and distribution of diversity of the world’s languages, we can formulate and provide evidence for statements about the nature of language (Brenzinger 2007; Hyman 2003; Evans 2009; Harrison 2007). From the latter perspective, it is especially interesting to document lan- guages that are the most divergent from ones that are well-documented—in other words, those that belong to unrelated families. I have conducted a survey of the documentation of the language families of the world, and in this paper, I will list the least-documented ones.

This paper gives some preliminary data on Keuw, based on a few days of field work. Keuw is phonologically similar to Lakes Plain languages: it lacks contrastive nasals and has at least two tones. Basic word order is SOV. Lexical comparison with surrounding languages suggests that Keuw is best classified as an isolate. Keywords: Keuw, Kehu, Papua, Indonesia, New Guinea, isolate, description, classification 1 INTRODUCTION Keuw (ISO 639-3 khh, also known as Kehu or Keu) is a poorly documented language spoken by a small ethnic group of the same name in southeast Cenderawasih Bay. Keuw territory is located in a swampy lowland plain along the Poronai river in Wapoga distrct, Nabire regency, Papua province, Indonesia (see Figure 1 and 2). The Keuw are reported to be in occasional contact with the Burate (bti, East Geelvink Bay family), who live downstream near the mouth of the Poronai (village: Totoberi), and the Dao/Maniwo (daz, Paniai Lakes family), who live upstream in the highlands (village: Taumi). There is no known contact with other nearby ethnic groups, which include a group of Waropen (wrp, Austronesian) who live just south of the Burate (village: Samanui), and the Auye (auu, Paniai Lakes family), who live in the highlands along the Siriwo river.

Here, we explore the emergence of phonological stratification using two alternative forced-choice (2afc) identification task experiments to test listener perception of stop voicing with contrasting minimal pairs modified along a 10-step continuum. We examine a unique language ecology consisting of three languages spo- ken in Northern Territory, Australia: Roper Kriol (an English-lexifier creole language), Gurindji (Pama-Nyungan), and Gurindji Kriol (a mixed language derived from Gurindji and Kriol). In addition, this study focuses on three distinct age groups: children (group i, 8>), preteens to middle-aged adults (group ii, 10–58), and older adults (group iii, 65+). Results reveal that both Kriol and Gurindji Kriol listeners in group ii contrast the labial series [p] and [b]. Contrarily, while alveolar [t] and velar [k] were consis- tently identifiable by the majority of participants (74%), their voiced counterparts ([d] and [g]) showed random response patterns by 61% of the participants. (Nikolai Sergeevich); (b. 1890, d. 1938; Russian), lecturer at Moscow University (1915-1916), Rostov-on-Don University (1918), Sofia University (1920-1922), finally professor of Slavic linguistics at Vienna University (1922-1938). One of the founding fathers of phonology and a key theorist of the Prague School. (See Also: *Jakobson, Roman; *Martinet, André). Trubetzkoy’s life was blighted by persecution. Born in Moscow of aristocratic, academic parents, Trubetzkoy (whose names have been transliterated variously) was a prince, and, after study and an immediate start to a university career in Moscow, he was forced to flee by the 1917 revolution; he subsequently also had to leave Rostov and Sofia. On settling in Vienna, he became a geographically distant member of the Prague Linguistic Circle. It is at times difficult to tease his ideas apart from those of his friend *Jakobson, who ensured that his nearly-finished Grundzüge der Phonologie (1939) was posthumously published. Trubetzkoy had previously published substantial work in several fields, but this was his magnum opus. It summarised his previous phonological work and stands now as the classic statement of Prague School phonology, setting out an array of phonological ideas, several of which still characterise debate on phonological representations. Through it, the publications which preceded it, his work at conferences and general enthusiastic networking, Trubetzkoy was crucial in the development of phonology as a discipline distinct from phonetics, and the change in phonological focus from diachrony to synchrony.

They comprise all languages of Australasia (Oceania) not covered by phylosectors 3=Austronesian or 5=Indo-European. Zones 20= to 24= cover all so-called "Papuan" languages, spoken on Maluku and the Lesser Sunda islands and the New Guinea mainland, which have been previously treated within the "Trans-New Guinea" hypothesis: 20= ARAFURA geozone 21= MAMBERAMO geozone 22= MANDANGIC phylozone 23= OWALAMIC phylozone 24= TRANSIRIANIC phylozone Zones 25= to 27= cover all other so-called "Papuan" languages, on the New Guinea mainland, Bismarck archipelago, New Britain, New Ireland and Solomon islands, which have not been treated within the "Trans-New Guinea" hypothesis: 25= CENDRAWASIH geozone 26= SEPIK-VALLEY geozone 27= BISMARCK-SEA geozone Zones 28= to 29= cover all languages spoken traditionally across the Australian mainland, on the offshore Elcho, Howard, Crocodile and Torres Strait islands (excluding Darnley island), and formerly on the island of Tasmania. An "Australian" hypothesis covers all these languages, excluding the extinct and little known languages of Tasmania, comprising (1.) an area of more diffuse and complex relationships in the extreme north, covered here by geozone 28=, and (2.) a more closely related affinity (Pama+ Nyungan) throughout the rest of Australia, covered by 24 of the 25 sets of phylozone 29=.

MLA in Papua, Page 1 SUMMARY Conservation International (CI) supports a number of ongoing initiatives in the Mamberamo area of Papua. The principal aims are to strengthen biodiversity conservation and environmental management and facilitate the creation of a ‘Mamberamo Biodiversity Conservation Corridor’, which links currently established protected areas through strategically placed ‘indigenous forest reserves’. Two primary requirements are 1) to find suitable means to allow local communities to participate in decision-making processes, and 2) capacity building of locally based researchers to assist in planning and developing this program. The MLA training reported here is designed to build capacity and assess options and opportunities within this context. The Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has developed methods for assessing 'what really matters' to communities living in tropical forest landscapes. Known as the Multidisciplinary Landscape Assessment or ‘MLA' (see http://www.cifor.cgiar.org/mla), this approach enhances understanding amongst conservation and development practitioners, policy makers and forest communities. Information yielded through the MLA can identify where local communities’ interests and priorities might converge (or conflict) with conservation and sustainable development goals. CIFOR's MLA methods have already been applied in Indonesia (East Kalimantan), Bolivia and Cameroon.
