PREFACE THE issue of this series has been intenupted by the war, and this volume has been interpolated, for several reasons, somewhat out of its proper place in the order of Bacon's unpublished work, partly out of a consideration of the great importance of the text on which he comments, and partly on account of its influence on his whole work. Mediaeval students will be glad to learn that the publication of the whole of Bacon's work now seems assured. As before, I have to acknowledge the ready assistance of mediaeval scholars, among them Prof. A. G. Little, Mr. J. P. To complete the work and make it more generally liseful to students of mediaeval hterature, certain passages unknown to Bacon, but inserted by Achillini in his edition of 1501 from a Hebrew version of the Western recension, have been added, together with a literal translation of the original Arabic made under my supervision by Mr. Ismail AH and edited by Mr. Fulton, of the Oriental Department of the British Museum, who is preparing an edition of the Arabic text. This rendering will serve as a key to the I^tin, and at the same time will show the remarkable accuracy of the original translation and the variation it has undergone. The MS. (Tanner 116) is an English manuscript, which at one time belonged to Archbishop Sancroft. It is described in Hack- ' man's Catalogue thus : Codex membranaceus in foHo minore, ff. III, sec. XIII exeuntis ; binis columnis, haud eadem manu exara- tus ; oHm pecuHum Jacobi Windet, ex dono Jacobi Everitti Antver- piensis.' It contains (i) R. B. tractatus ad declaranda quedam obscure dfcta in Hbro Secreti Secretorum AristoteHs (here printed, pp. 1-24). (2) Extracts from Opus Tertium, &c., see p. 24. (3) Secretum Secretorum (here printed, pp. 25-172). (4) Tracts by Simon de Faversham, &c. It was apparently in EngHsh hands at the beginning of the sixteenth century, as it contains some verses in EngHsh by Robert Dey. Later copies (almost certainly of this manuscript) are Trinity CoU. Cambridge 1036 (fifteenth century) FitzwiUiam Mus. Carnb. McClean 153 (fifteenth century), C.C.C. Ox. 149 (late fourteenth, Dr. Dee's copy). A number of Bacon's notes are incorporated in a MS. of the Sccrelum in the British Museum MS. 12 E. xv, which afterwards belonged to Edward IV when a youth. The date to be assigned to Bacon's share in this work Hes between well-fixed Hmits. In the first place, the fact that he uses the method of glossing would dispose us to put it early in his career. In the second, the fact that he alters the manuscripts before him when they treat of the length of the year (p. 80), preferring the worse to the better reading, shows that he had not, at the time of writing the note, arrived at the sense of the importance of accuracy in astronomy which he entertained, say, in 1267, when he wrote the Opus Majus. Thirdly, a number of the notes were written soon after his return to Oxford, after a stay in Paris (pp. 34, 38). I am therefore incUned to put the completion of the text and notes at some date before 1257, when he returned to Paris. The glosses, interhnear in the MS., are printed here immediately below the text as large-print notes. The introductory treatise is much later. It must be some time after the comet of August, 1264 (p. 10'^). It must even be after 1267. On p. 3" Bacon is very severe on 'glomerelU nescientes Grecum ' for their confusion of ' matesis ' and ' mathesis ', translating ' * '. the first as knowledge ' and the second as divination Unfortu- nately he had in 1267 faUen intothe same mistake (Op. Maj. i. 239'^), and repeated it next year (Op. Tert., Brewer, p. 27^), though he corrected it in his Greek Grammar (p. 118^), and in his Mathematics. I am incUned to place the date of the introduction at about 1270, especiaUy in view of Bacon's remarks about a forthcoming total ecUpse (ti^^), which must refer either to that of June 13, 1276, visible in the polar regions, or of Oct. 28, 1277, visible in East Asia, which however did not become visible in England or France (unless the passage was written before the ecUpse of May 25, 1267, visible in Italy). The Secretum Secretorum exercised so great^an influence on the mental development of Roger Bacon that merely on this ground a study of it would be interesting. From his first wofk to his last he quotes it as an authority, and there can be no doubt that it fortified, if it did not create, his beUef in astrology and natural magic. It came to him and his contemporaries as an unquestioned work of Aristotle, which must have been known to exist for over a century, since it was quoted by Mesue, p. 273 (eleventh or twelfth century^) and a portion of it was translated c. 1135 ^"^ Spain, though Averroes in II 77 says, in his commentary to the Ethics (Lib. X in fitie), that ' the de regimine vite ' had not yet come into his hands. The * He quotes, however, only froin the intrusive 'de ocuhs ', and even then not from anv text knuwn to us. —'' absence of a Greek text could make no difference to its reception there was no original text known at the time of many other un- questioned works of Aristotle—though Bacon seems to have hypnotized himself into a behef that he had seen one (p. 172"). The Secretum is perhaps the best known of that large family of works in which the man of the study takes upon himself the task of telling the man of affairs what he should do. Whistler is reported to have said that if artists went upon the Stock Exchange the quaUties necessary to make them good painters would enable them to beat the men of business out of hand.

Whitaker 2009 Abstract Despite general consensus among scholars that race in the West is an early modern phenomenon that dates to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, late medieval English texts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries expend no small amount of effort depicting the differences between people—individuals and groups—and categorizing those people accordingly. The contexts for the English literary concern with human difference were the Crusades and associated economic expansion and travel into Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Scholars who have argued that race is present in medieval texts have generally claimed that race is subordinate to religion, the dominant cultural force in medieval Europe. In “Race and Conversion in Late Medieval England,” I argue that race is not necessarily subordinate to religion. Rather, racial and religious discourses compete with one another for ideological dominance.

(THE HISTORICAL STUDY OF AL-RĀZĂ’S METAPHYSICAL THOUGHT) Nafisah CRCS Gadjah Mada University Email: [email protected] Abstract: This paper examines the origins of metaphysical thought of Abū Bakr Muh}ammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Rāzī. His metaphysics proposes five eternal principles which include (1) God (al-Bārī Subh\ānah), (2) universal soul (al-nafs al-kulliyah), (3) primeval matter (al-hayūla al-awwālah ), (4) absolute place (al-makan al-mutlaq), and (5) absolute time (al-zamān al-mutlaq). Some people argued that al-Rāzī took these ideas from other thinkers, or any teachings which were being developed at the time. Hence, these five principles are not his thought originally. Where does this doctrine come from? This library research utilizes the main data from al-Rāzī book entitled Rasā’il Falsafiyyah, particularly on the chapter of 'Al-Qudamā al- khamsah', and 'al-‘Ilm al-Ilāhi' and 'sīrah Falsafiyyah'. Other books that related to his thought are also explored to support the data in this research. This study proves that al-Rāzī develops these five concepts himself. He did not plagiarize others when writing his book as well formulating his view of metaphysic.     International Conference: Ancient Greece & Ancient Iran / Cross-Cultural encounters Athens 11-14 November 2006 Abstract Pseudo-Aristotelian politics and theology: from Rome to Qom Dr. Garth FOWDEN Research Centre for Greek and Roman Antiquity, NHRF, Greece Some historians still see the self-exile of a group of Athenian Platonists to Iran c. 530 as emblematic of Antiquity’s end. Yet in Justinian’s Christian empire Aristotle not only went on being studied, and even translated into Syriac; he was also reinvented to meet the needs of a society left cold by his Politics but fascinated by his relationship with Alexander. Hence the invention, in Greek, of a correspondence between the sage and the autocrat, long lost but translated into Arabic under the Caliph Hisham (724-43), though with a much stronger Iranian tinge than can have been present in the Greek original. This was Aristotle’s debut in the Islamic world; and in the Arabic Letters we also find the germ of the Sirr al-asrar, a mirror for Muslim princes that became mediaeval Europe’s most popular book, the Secretum secretorum. Besides his politics, the authentic Aristotle’s theology was also found wanting. His logic might help Christian or Muslim controversialists score points, but his metaphysics remained as puzzling as ever. The first Arab philosopher, al-Kindi (d.c. 866), got round this by commissioning translations from Plotinus and Proclus and editing them into a metaphysics handbook he circulated under an eminently commercial title, Theology of Aristotle.     PSEUDO-ARISTOTLE, Secret des secrets [Secret of Secrets], anonymous translation In French, illuminated manuscript on parchment France (perhaps Arras or Tournai, or Paris?), c. 1300-1320 67 folios on parchment, wanting three leaves (two from the third quire and first leaf from sixth, else complete (collation i-ii8 iii8 [lacking the outermost bifolium, 1 and 8] iv-v8 vi8 [lacking one leaf, 1] vii-viii8 ix6, the last leaf blank), eighteenth- century pagination 1-132 in ink (followed here), written on 25 lines in a fine, early gothic bookhand in brown ink between 4 vertical and 25 horizontal lines ruled in brown ink (justification 125 x 83 mm.), serrated ornamental cadels at top and bottom of text frame (some in later part of book touched in red), capitals touched in red, nearly 100 two-line initials in highly burnished gold leaf on blue and pink variegated grounds touched with white penwork, frontispiece with one six-line historiated initial enclosing Aristotle kneeling before an enthroned Alexander the Great offering him the book, all before tessellated background in gold and colors (slight smudging and flaking from initial), full border of gold and colored bars enclosing geometric bosses at its corners and midpoints and terminating in gold foliage and bezants, seven small birds and a hare perched on text frame, the latter in the bas-de-page pursued by a hound as a monkey blows a hunting horn, pen trials of French words and an elaborate monogram with a human face in late sixteenth-century hand upside down on front parchment endleaf, slightly trimmed at edges with minor losses to border on frontispiece, parchment slightly cockled throughout, else fine condition.
