Faulhaber University of California, Berkeley My purpose is very straightforward: to examine, as a group, the texts translated from Hebrew or Arabic into one of the medieval Romance vernaculars of the Iberian Peninsula, Castilian, Catalan, or Portuguese, and to seek to identify their commonalities and differences. Why these texts? What subject areas do they represent? When were they translated? Were they translated directly from the original language into the target language, or via one or more intermediate languages? How often are Hebrew and Arabic used as intermediating languages? What conclusions, if any, can be drawn for our understanding of cultural and intellectual relations among the three peoples of the book in medieval Spain? * This is a slightly revised version of a paper given at the conference on Wine, Women and Song: Poetry of Medieval Iberia, University of California, Berkeley, April 29, 2001. But the existence of the PhiloBiblon database system of the primary sources for the study of the medieval Iberian vernacular literatures, in the broadest sense of the word, makes this almost a trivial exercise.1 The existence of this tool allows us to find data rapidly and according to a wide range of search criteria. -
Alchemical Culture and Poetry in Early Modern England
Alchemical culture and poetry in early modern England PHILIP BALL Nature, 4–6 Crinan Street, London N1 9XW, UK There is a longstanding tradition of using alchemical imagery in poetry. It first flourished at the end of the sixteenth century, when the status of alchemy itself was revitalised in European society. Here I explain the reasons for this resurgence of the Hermetic arts, and explore how it was manifested in English culture and in particular in the literary and poetic works of the time. In 1652 the English scholar Elias Ashmole published a collection of alchemical texts called Theatrum Chymicum Britannicum, comprising ‘Several Poeticall Pieces of Our Most Famous English Philosophers’. Among the ‘chemical philosophers’ represented in the volume were the fifteenth-century alchemists Sir George Ripley and Thomas Norton – savants who, Ashmole complained, were renowned on the European continent but unduly neglected in their native country. Ashmole trained in law, but through his (second) marriage to a rich widow twenty years his senior he acquired the private means to indulge at his leisure a scholarly passion for alchemy and astrology. A Royalist by inclination, he had been forced to leave his London home during the English Civil War and had taken refuge in Oxford, the stronghold of Charles I’s forces. In 1677 he donated his impressive collection of antiquities to the University of Oxford, and the building constructed to house them became the Ashmolean, the first public museum in England. Ashmole returned to London after the civil war and began to compile the Theatrum, which was intended initially as a two-volume work. -

It is organized around two nodal questions: Can life be prolonged? Should it be prolonged? The project hinges upon Francis Bacon (1561-1626), for whom the prolongation of life in the sense of a longer human lifespan serves as the loftiest goal of modern experimental science. Addressing the first question, Part One illustrates the texture and diversity of early modern theories of senescence and medical treatments against the ―disease‖ of old age promoted by Galen, Avicenna, medieval theologians, Jean Fernel, Marsilio Ficino, and Paracelsus. Part Two then demonstrates that Bacon‘s theory of senescence and corresponding therapies nevertheless differ from those of his predecessors and contemporaries in three regards: their attempt to isolate senescence from disease, their postulation of senescence as a process based on universal structures and actions of matter, and their deferral to further experiment for elucidation. -

Alchemia This is a long page, but the three texts below are well worth the read, I have some ending comments that I wish to share. These examples are of the Beginning stages of our Art. The first is a famous tract entitled the Secret Book . Written in the sixteenth century by someone named Artephius, who claims that at the time of his little tract he had lived about a thousand years (do remember that the Stone does not give eternal physical life, for one must pass through the three stages of life at some point, but cleanses the body of disease and fortifies it so one might live much longer than expected). This secret book is one of the most revealing texts explaining the entire process and the first process both at the same time. It is clear, concise and to the point. Note however that there is apparently no order or explanations as to which stage and substance he is writing about. It is left entirely up to the "clever young Philosopher" to discover. As we Philosophers progress and read more and more of the great texts, it becomes clearer and more precise (all of the true texts agreeing with one another albeit with different analogies and allegories). One begins to see themes suddenly arising apparently out of nowhere, a burst of new enlightenment arises and what was hidden before, becomes clear. The second text was written by John Pontanus who also claimed to find the Stone, and his text is to the point of one substance: the Sophic Fire or Secret fire . -

CHAPTER SIX A SCIENCE OF TIME: ROGER BACON AND HIS SUCCESSORS 1. Bacon, the Calendar, and the Passion of Christ The acute criticism of the ecclesiastical calendar voiced in theCompotus emendatus of Reinher of Paderborn and—in somewhat more subdued form—in the works of Constabularius and Roger of Hereford fell on fertile ground in the following century, during which three well-known English scholars went on to pen influential treatises on the reform of the calendar, which took account of the deficiencies both of the Julian calendar with respect to the sun and the 19-year lunisolar cycle with respect to the moon. The three men in question were the astronomer John of Sacrobosco (ca. 1195–ca. 1256), who wrote a treatise De anni ratione (ca. 1232/35),1 Robert Grosseteste (ca. 1170–1253), chancellor of Oxford University and bishop of Hereford, who wrote a Compo- tus correctorius (ca. 1220/30), and—most importantly—the Franciscan polymath Roger Bacon (ca. 1214/20–ca. 1292).2 Bacon’s views on the calendar have gained particular fame for the strident tone in which they were expressed and for the fact that he was the first to present this kind of criticism to the only person in Latin Christendom who could have possibly authorized the desired change: Pope Clement IV (1265–68), to whom he addressed both his Opus 1 Theeditio princeps of this text can be found in John of Sacrobosco, Libellus de Sphaera, ed. Although the production of artefacts has been a constant activity of humans since the dawn of history, the Ancient world tended to disvalue it, considering it a lower endeavour that aims to satisfy ignoble material needs. Technology, according to Ancient Greek thinkers, cannot surpass nature but can only bring small improvements to it; moreover, there is a difference in kind between natural things and technological artefacts; the activity of inventing and producing useful objects is unsuited for the nobility and for free men; there is an irreducible gap between proper knowledge and the production of artefacts. Descartes' Optics
Descartes’ Optics Jeffrey K. McDonough Descartes’ work on optics spanned his entire career and represents a fascinating area of inquiry. His interest in the study of light is already on display in an intriguing study of refraction from his early notebook, known as the Cogitationes privatae, dating from 1619 to 1621 (AT X 242-3). Optics figures centrally in Descartes’ The World, or Treatise on Light, written between 1629 and 1633, as well as, of course, in his Dioptrics published in 1637. It also, however, plays important roles in the three essays published together with the Dioptrics, namely, the Discourse on Method, the Geometry, and the Meteorology, and many of Descartes’ conclusions concerning light from these earlier works persist with little substantive modification into the Principles of Philosophy published in 1644. In what follows, we will look in a brief and general way at Descartes’ understanding of light, his derivations of the two central laws of geometrical optics, and a sampling of the optical phenomena he sought to explain. We will conclude by noting a few of the many ways in which Descartes’ efforts in optics prompted – both through agreement and dissent – further developments in the history of optics. Descartes was a famously systematic philosopher and his thinking about optics is deeply enmeshed with his more general mechanistic physics and cosmology. In the sixth chapter of The Treatise on Light, he asks his readers to imagine a new world “very easy to know, but nevertheless similar to ours” consisting of an indefinite space filled everywhere with “real, perfectly solid” matter, divisible “into as many parts and shapes as we can imagine” (AT XI ix; G 21, fn 40) (AT XI 33-34; G 22-23). -

chapter 4 Agrippa’s Cosmic Ladder: Building a World with Words in the De Occulta Philosophia Noel Putnik In this essay I examine certain aspects of Cornelius Agrippa’s De occulta philosophia libri tres (Three Books of Occult Philosophy, 1533), one of the foun- dational works in the history of western esotericism.1 To venture on a brief examination of such a highly complex work certainly exceeds the limitations of an essay, but the problem I intend to delineate, I believe, can be captured and glimpsed in its main contours. I wish to consider the ways in which the German humanist constructs and represents a common Renaissance image of the universe in his De occulta philosophia. This image is of pivotal importance for understanding Agrippa’s peculiar worldview as it provides a conceptual framework in which he develops his multilayered and heterodox thought. In other words, I deal with Agrippa’s cosmology in the context of his magical the- ory. The main conclusion of my analysis is that Agrippa’s approach to this topic is remarkably non-visual and that his symbolism is largely of verbal nature, revealing an author predominantly concerned with the nature of discursive language and the linguistic implications of magical thinking. The De occulta philosophia is the largest, most important, and most complex among the works of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486–1535). It is a summa of practically all the esoteric doctrines and magical practices ac- cessible to the author. As is well known and discussed in scholarship, this vast and diverse amount of material is organized within a tripartite structure that corresponds to the common Neoplatonic notion of a cosmic hierarchy. -

To make the most of his simple surroundings, he began to study the physiology of vision and the properties of light. Upon release, he described his investigations in a mas- sive, seven-volume treatise titled Kitâb al-Manâzir· , or Book of Optics . Although missing from the many lists of the most important books ever written, Kitâb al- Manâzir changed the course of human history, giving mankind a new and effec- tive way of establishing facts about the natural world—an approach known today as the scientific method . We also discuss the importance of the translation work that need to emphasize. Stages of the translation period based on history knowledge also been highlighted. An example of the translation from Rau ḍat al-Ḥuss āb f ī ‘Ilm al-Ḥis āb that was written by Malay ‘Ulama 1 in 1307H/1893M is also shown here. The book was printed in Egypt and has been used in teaching and learning among the student at the Holy Mosque ( Masjid al- Har ām). Therefore, from this work hope that the introduction of the book presented here is sufficient to stimulate interest in readers and researchers to embark and investigate the beauty and the power of script translation in providing more knowledge especially in the mathematics education area. INTRODUCTION The amount of translation into Arabic from Greek, Syrian, Persian and Sanskrit was at its peak during the ninth and tenth century. ‘Ulama of Islam, Christianity, Judaism and even Zoroastrianism were employed in the translation and writing new scientific masterpieces. In the course of time the works of Euclid, Ptolemy, Aristotle, Apollonius, Archimedes, Heron, Diophantus and the Hindus were accessible in Arabic.
