Luxury Carmaker Bentley to Axe 1,000 UK Jobs 5 June 2020 Luxury carmaker Bentley to axe 1,000 UK jobs 5 June 2020 Car dealership group Lookers said Thursday that it would axe about 1,500 jobs and shut 12 showrooms. James Bond's favourite carmaker Aston Martin meanwhile cut 500 jobs in response to tumbling demand and ballooning losses at the luxury group that began long before the virus appeared. It comes as car dealerships in England reopened this week as the UK government relaxed COVID-19 measures that slammed the brakes on vehicle sales. Car sales had screeched to a near halt in April and Credit: CC0 Public Domain May after Britain's lockdown imposed on March 23. © 2020 AFP German-owned luxury car brand Bentley on Friday said it would axe around 1,000 jobs in the UK as the market weathers the coronavirus-induced downturn. The carmaker, a Volkswagen division that employs 4,200 workers in Britain, said fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak "hastened" its move to cut almost one-quarter of the UK workforce. "Losing colleagues is not something we are treating lightly but this is a necessary step that we have to take to safeguard the jobs of the vast majority who will remain, and deliver a sustainable business model for the future," said Bentley Motors chairman and chief executive Adrian Hallmark. "COVID-19 has not been the cause of this measure but a hastener," he added. Friday's news caps a grim week for Britain's automotive sector, which has been slammed by tanking demand as a result of the coronavirus lockdown. 1 / 2 APA citation: Luxury carmaker Bentley to axe 1,000 UK jobs (2020, June 5) retrieved 23 September 2021 from https://techxplore.com/news/2020-06-luxury-carmaker-bentley-axe-uk.html This document is subject to copyright. This has led to an oversupply of new cars, forced into the market by manufacturer incentives and pre registrations by dealers and, as a consequence, used car margins have declined. Pendragon’s aftersales business has performed well and we have had good results in our support businesses such as Pinewood Technologies and our leasing companies. The group has continued to generate significant amounts of cash which have been used to reduce borrowings and further strengthen our balance sheet. We are reporting adjusted earnings per share of 3.5 pence for the period compared to 4.7 pence in 2006 and an interim dividend of 2.0 pence per share compared to an interim dividend of 1.45 pence in 2006. The increase in dividend is in line with indications given in our AGM statement and represents an increase of 38%.

  • Horsepower Racing Calls in the Power of AMR Aston Martin Racing Was Delighted to Start a New Relationship with Horsepower Racing
Horsepower Racing calls in the power of AMR Aston Martin Racing was delighted to start a new relationship with Horsepower Racing last week, when the team found itself without a car just days before the opening round of the 2013 Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship at Donington Park, UK. The day after team-owner and driver Paul Bailey called the Banbury-based team, the V12 Vantage GT3 was delivered, and the following day it competed in the three-hour race finishing 2nd overall and recording the fastest lap of the day by more than half a second. The Vantage GT3 was quick from the off-set; when Bailey and teammate Andy Schulz drove the car in Saturday’s warm-up session, it was fastest on track, as the pair quickly adapted to the new car. In qualifying, Schulz stunned on-lookers as he put the car 3rd on the grid in his first competitive outing in the V12 charger. In the highly-competitive race, the Pro-Am team used the Vantage GT3’s pace and reliability to push hard to the end, taking the second place position and finishing two laps ahead of the third place car. Paul Bailey comments: “At Donington Park on Thursday, the engine blew up on my Ferrari 430 GT2 and I couldn’t source a new engine. At half-past four, I called Aston Martin Racing and asked if I could have a car, spare parts and technician and the answer was yes! The car was delivered with the correct livery and transponder set up on Friday evening.

Less than a month from now – provided infection rates continue to drop – vehicle showrooms will be allowed to reopen, plus we’ll be able to have a cuppa outside with a pal or relation after work. The past 12 months have made me appreciate technology more than ever. Since AM shifted to working at home last March, our video meetings, webinars and phone calls have Ihelped Tom and I keep abreast of how you’re overcoming the challenges – adapting to survive, as our cover illustrates. Whereas in normal times we would have been on site, being nosey and asking questions in someone’s dealership or an OEM’s office, every single month. I’ve missed those visits. I’m sick of the sight of Peterborough, to be honest. So, I’ll finish with two toasts: Here’s to WiFi, our saviour in lock- downs. And here’s to face-to-face meetings (no matter whether dealer-customer or AM-dealer) in the spring sunshine.
