Biography of Kenneth “Pappy” Webster Ford

Kenneth “Pappy” Webster Ford, was an iconic Douglas County, Oregon and Pacific Northwest timber merchant, as well as a very generous philanthropist. Ford was born on August 4, 1908 in Asotin, Washington, and passed away on February 8, 1997 at the age of 88, in Roseburg, Oregon.

Ford built Roseburg Forest Products Co. from a collection of secondhand machinery into the largest privately held timber company in the nation. In 1936, Ford established a mill near Roseburg, Oregon and soon after that paid $4 an acre for 85,000 acres that the county had taken over for delinquent taxes. That purchase was the beginning of the Roseburg Forest Products empire, which now has assets of $1 billion and does business in 10 US States and in Ontario, Canada. In 1970, Ford and his former wife, Hallie, created the Ford Family Foundation, which has donated tens of millions of dollars to schools, public agencies and charities. Most of the scholarships and other grants from the foundation have been awarded in the 11 geographical areas where Ford’s company operates.

Forests and the timber industry define the culture of southern Oregon, with Douglas County, Oregon once being proclaimed the “Timber Capitol of the World”. The post-World War II building boom spurred logging all across the county and especially in Douglas County. Timber harvests in Douglas County topped 1 billion board feet in 1948, dipped slightly under that mark the following year and then remained over 1 billion board feet per year for three decades. Production peaked at 1.96 billion board feet in 1955, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Kenneth and Hallie Ford rose from humble beginnings with a single sawmill during the Great Depression and helped transform the state's timber industry. They founded one of the largest privately owned wood-products companies in the country, bringing the title "Timber Capital of the Nation" to Roseburg, Oregon. Their legacy remains today through the Ford Family Foundation, dedicated to educational grants and community improvements.
