KNAPP1 SHORT Department of Geology, Whitman College, 345 Boyer Avenue, Walla Walla, WA 99362, USA (E-mail: [email protected]) CONTRIBUTION Associate Editor – Nick Eyles ABSTRACT Four stratigraphic sections in the southern part of the Columbia Basin preserve a sequence of aeolian and non-aeolian sediments ranging in age from 9Æ43 to >47Æ0 14C ka based on accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating of fossil molluscs, geochemistry of Cascade Mountain-sourced tephra and association with formally recognized pedostratigraphic units (the Washtucna and Old Maid Coulee soils). Study sections are interpreted as representing concurrent deposition of loess and distal Missoula Flood rhythmites in valleys tributary to main drainages backflooded during the Missoula Floods, and formation of carbonate and iron-rich soils. Sediments belong to the formally recognized L-1 and L-2 loess units established for the Palouse loess, which were deposited in the Columbia Basin subsequent to events of glacial outburst flooding. Sediments associated with the Mount Saint Helens set S and set C tephras in the study sections preserve a fauna of five species of gastropod mollusc which have not been reported previously from sediments of late Pleistocene age in the Palouse region. The fossils comprise two distinct faunules stratigraphically separated by the Mount Saint Helens So tephra. Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating of the fossils collected above the tephra in two of the sections yielded ages of 12Æ48 ± 0Æ06 and 9Æ43 ± 0Æ05 14C kyr. These ages suggest that independent determinations of the 13Æ35 14C kyr age of the So tephra in other areas where Missoula Flood sediments are preserved are probably accurate, and help to refine the age of the latest events in the most recent sequence of catastrophic glacial outburst flooding.     Feb 2004 WINNEMUCCA to the SEA Highway The Historic Winnemucca to the Sea Highway “Gateway to the Pacific Northwest” John Ryczkowski The Winnemucca to the Sea highway was developed to establish a continu- ous, improved all-weather highway from US-40 (I-80) at Winnemucca, Nevada through Medford, Oregon and on to the Pacific coast at Crescent City, California. In the mid 1950’s there was no direct route west from Northern Nevada across South- ern Oregon and into California’s Redwood Empire. Community leaders from points along this proposed link formed the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway Association. The association worked with state and local governments to fund the design, con- struction and upgrade of the paved roadway for this east to west link across three states. The association had envisioned one highway number 140 applied to the complete route, as the parent major US highway was coast-to-coast US-40, the Victory Highway. Nevada and Oregon used state route 140 for their respective sections of the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway. But the renumbering or cosigning of federal highways was an obstacle that the Winnemucca to the Sea Association never did overcome, thus the hope of a continuous 140 designation for this link was never realized. Currently the traveler will follow seven different highway numbers from Winnemucca to Crescent City, they are US-95, state route-140, US-395, state Association brochure circa 1960’s route-62, Interstate-5, US-199 and US-101. Winnemucca, named after a local Paiute chief, has always been a crossroads town.

M. Taylorc--_, The northern part of the Southeast Three Sisters quadrangle strad- dles the crest of the central High Cascades of Oregon. The area is covered by Pleistocene and Holocene volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that were extruded from a number of composite cones, shield volcanoes, and cinder cones. The principal eruptive centers include Sphinx Butte, The Wife, The Husband, and South Sister volcanoes. Sphinx Butte, The Wife, and The Husband are typical High Cascade shield and composite vol- canoes whose compositions are limited to basalt and basaltic andesite. South Sister is a complex composite volcano composed of a diverse assem- blage of rocks. In contrast with earlier studies, the present investi- gation finds that South Sister is not a simple accumulation of andesite and dacite lavas; nor does the eruptive sequence display obvious evolu- tionary trends or late stage divergence to basalt and rhyolite. Rather, the field relations indicate that magmas of diverse composition have been extruded from South Sister vents throughout the lifespan of this volcano. The compositional variation at South Sister is. atypical of the Oregon High Cascade platform. This variation, however, represents part of a continued pattern of late Pliocene and Pleistocene magmatic diver- sity in a local region that includes Middle Sister, South Sister, and Broken Top volcanoes. Regional and local geologic constraints combined with chemical and petrographic criteria indicate that a local subcrustal process probably produced the magmas extruded fromSouth Sister, whereas a regional subcrustal process probably producedthe magmas extruded from Sphinx Butte, The Wife, and The Husband.

    Weather and Climate of the Rogue Valley By Gregory V. Jones, Ph.D., Southern Oregon University The Rogue Valley region is one of many intermountain valley areas along the west coast of the United States. Nestled in the southwestern portion of Oregon, the landscape of the Rogue Valley is extremely diverse, coming from the joining of three mountain ranges of varying ages and structure: the Klamath and Siskiyou Mountains to the southwest to southeast, the Coastal Range to the west, and the Cascades to the east and north. The region is drained mainly by the Rogue River and its major tributaries; the Applegate River, the Illinois River, and Bear Creek. At the largest scale, the weather and climate of the region is mainly influenced by the North Pacific Ocean and the westerly winds of the mid-latitudes. The maritime air masses that originate over the Pacific are cooled by the ocean currents offshore and moderate the climate of the region. Seasonally the west coast undergoes shifts between cooler, moister conditions in the winter with a strengthening of the Aleutian Low that brings storms into the region; to warmer, drier conditions in the summer that are associated with the dominance of the Pacific High. On a regional scale, the general north-south or northwest-southeast oriented valleys, with their proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the number and height of mountain barriers, help to create climate conditions of wetter and cooler areas in the western parts of the region and warmer and drier eastern areas. At the local scale, site differences in elevation, topography, and orientation to the sun influence the variation in gardening potential.

    CITY OF SEATTLE CEMP – SHIVA GEOLOGIC HAZARDS Volcanic Hazards • Washington State is home to five active volcanoes located in the Cascade Range, east of Seattle: Mt. Baker, Glacier Peak, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens (see figure [Cascades volcanoes]). Washington and California are the only states in the lower 48 to experience a major volcanic eruption in the past 150 years. • Major hazards caused by eruptions are blast, pyroclastic flows, lahars, post-lahar sedimentation, and ashfall. Seattle is too far from any volcanoes to receive damage from blast and pyroclastic flows. o Ash falls could reach Seattle from any of the Cascades volcanoes, but prevailing weather patterns would typically blow ash away from Seattle, to the east side of the state. However, to underscore this uncertainty, ash deposits from multiple pre-historic eruptions have been found in Seattle, including Glacier Peak (less than 1 inch) and Mt. Mazama/Crater Lake (amount unknown) ash. o The City of Seattle depends on power, water, and transportation resources located in the Cascades and Eastern Washington where ash is more likely to fall. Seattle City Light operates dams directly east of Mt. Baker and in Pend Oreille County in eastern Washington. Seattle’s water comes from two reservoirs located on the western slopes of the Central Cascades, so they are outside the probable path of ashfall. o If heavy ash were to fall over Seattle it would create health problems, paralyze the transportation system, destroy many mechanical objects, endanger the utility networks and cost millions of dollars to clean up. Ash can be very dangerous to aviation.
