Feb 2004 WINNEMUCCA to the SEA Highway The Historic Winnemucca to the Sea Highway “Gateway to the Pacific Northwest” John Ryczkowski The Winnemucca to the Sea highway was developed to establish a continu- ous, improved all-weather highway from US-40 (I-80) at Winnemucca, Nevada through Medford, Oregon and on to the Pacific coast at Crescent City, California. In the mid 1950’s there was no direct route west from Northern Nevada across South- ern Oregon and into California’s Redwood Empire. Community leaders from points along this proposed link formed the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway Association. The association worked with state and local governments to fund the design, con- struction and upgrade of the paved roadway for this east to west link across three states. The association had envisioned one highway number 140 applied to the complete route, as the parent major US highway was coast-to-coast US-40, the Victory Highway. Nevada and Oregon used state route 140 for their respective sections of the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway. But the renumbering or cosigning of federal highways was an obstacle that the Winnemucca to the Sea Association never did overcome, thus the hope of a continuous 140 designation for this link was never realized. Currently the traveler will follow seven different highway numbers from Winnemucca to Crescent City, they are US-95, state route-140, US-395, state Association brochure circa 1960’s route-62, Interstate-5, US-199 and US-101. Winnemucca, named after a local Paiute chief, has always been a crossroads town. -

American Palate, Charleston, South Carolina, 2013, 160 pp., ISBN: 978-1609496760 (paperback), $19.99. CILA WARNCKE: Oregon Wine Pioneers. Vine Lives Publishing, Portland, Oregon, 2015, 234 pp., ISBN: 978-1943090761 (paperback), $19.99. Admittedly, it was hard to write a dispassionate review of books that so lovingly describe the region in which I live and so admiringly profile many of my acquain- tances in the Oregon wine industry. Therefore, I used as measures of merit how well each echoed my impressions of this most beautiful area and its people, and whether each accomplished its objectives. Perry’s and Vincent’s Winemakers of the Willamette Valley (WWV) “is meant to showcase the stories of a handful of Oregon’s many Willamette Valley winemakers” (WWV, p. 11). A foreword by Chehalem founder Harry Peterson-Nedry sets the per- sonal tone that pervades those stories. Next, in a mere eight pages of text, the first chapter, “History of the Willamette Valley Wine Region,” covers the climate, soil, grape selection, craftsmanship, industry structure and early success in sufficient detail to provide valuable context. The authors then share intimate interviews with eighteen vintners and vignerons. Within each chapter named for one or two wine- makers are brief descriptions of the wineries that each is affiliated with. These include year founded, ownership, varietals, tasting room location, hours and con- tacts. Sustainability features, a point of pride in the Oregon wine industry, are also listed. -

BOTTLING DATE : February 6, 2018 The winter gave way to a relatively cool and wet spring compared to the last few years. Weather and Climate of the Rogue Valley By Gregory V. Jones, Ph.D., Southern Oregon University The Rogue Valley region is one of many intermountain valley areas along the west coast of the United States. Nestled in the southwestern portion of Oregon, the landscape of the Rogue Valley is extremely diverse, coming from the joining of three mountain ranges of varying ages and structure: the Klamath and Siskiyou Mountains to the southwest to southeast, the Coastal Range to the west, and the Cascades to the east and north. The region is drained mainly by the Rogue River and its major tributaries; the Applegate River, the Illinois River, and Bear Creek. At the largest scale, the weather and climate of the region is mainly influenced by the North Pacific Ocean and the westerly winds of the mid-latitudes. The maritime air masses that originate over the Pacific are cooled by the ocean currents offshore and moderate the climate of the region. Seasonally the west coast undergoes shifts between cooler, moister conditions in the winter with a strengthening of the Aleutian Low that brings storms into the region; to warmer, drier conditions in the summer that are associated with the dominance of the Pacific High. On a regional scale, the general north-south or northwest-southeast oriented valleys, with their proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the number and height of mountain barriers, help to create climate conditions of wetter and cooler areas in the western parts of the region and warmer and drier eastern areas. At the local scale, site differences in elevation, topography, and orientation to the sun influence the variation in gardening potential. -

AVA Statistics Land Size & Borders: The Umpqua Valley sits between the Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Range to the east, with the Willamette Valley AVA to the north and the Rogue Valley AVA to the south. The appellation stretches 65 miles from north to south, and is 25 miles from east to west. Number of Varieties: Over 40 Dominant Varieties: Syrah, Pinot Gris, Tempranillo, Riesling, Pinot Noir Earliest Plantings: Richard Sommer established Hillcrest Vineyards near Roseburg in 1961, and was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Oregon Number of Wineries: 23, 22 of which are family owned and operated Number of Vineyards: 17 Soils: Over 150 soil types are derived from a mix of metamorphic, sedimentary and volcanic rock. The valley floor levels have mostly deep alluvial or heavy clay materials, while the hillsides and bench locations have mixed alluvial, silt or clay structures – all typically excellent for winegrowing. -
