Necati ŞENTÜRK Kırşehir Valisi 6 Introduction Having maintained the relics of a 5 – thousand year history in its bosom, Kırşehir has been home for the Turkmen tribes who came in flocks from Middle Asia following the Victory of Malazgirt Field Battle in 1071 and has played a great role in Turkicization and Islamisation of Anatolia. Kırşehir, used to be a place of settlement on a very significant trade route in times of Hittite, Phrygian, Persian states, the Roman and Byzantine Empires has lived its heyday to be a science, culture, the arts center during period of Anatolian Seljuks during 13th century. Upon residence of Ahi Evran-i Veli, it has also become the center for the Ahi Organization being the most significant organization of the Anatolian geography. In the fertile tolerance, “Akhism-brotherhood” environment, the Sultan of Bektashism, being the path of science and mysticism Haci Bektas-i Veli has established the dervish and the scholars, sufi managers and alperens such as Lover Pasha, Suleyman Turkmani, Ahmed-i Gülsehri who were the first advocates of Turkish language and the founder of astronomy madrasah Cacabey and Sheikh Edebali, being the spiritual architect of the Ottoman Empire, were trained in this lore climate and executed activities in these territories and produced unique works in every sense. It can be said that the path going to foundation of Ottoman State and historical process have started at Kırşehir. Today, our city possessing a rich historical, cultural and civilization heritage with its underground cities, tumulus, historic spas, tombs, caravanserais, mosques, castles and residences and healing thermal springs, thermal hotels such as Terme, Karakurt and Bulamaclı and the wetlands where we can simultaneously see hundreds of species of birds and resort locations as Hirfanli Dam expects to host domestic and foreign visitors in our Republic of Turkey as well. I herewith thank Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate that made contribution to the preparation of “Kırşehir City Guide” which would help promote our city.

  • Dendrochronologically Dated Ottoman Monuments
Dendrochronologically Dated Ottoman Monuments Peter Ian Kuniholm 4 Dendrochronologically Dated Ottoman Monuments Peter Ian Kuniholm INTRODUCTION Dendrochronology or tree-ring dating has been carried out by the author in former Ottoman lands since 1973. The method is, at its sim- plest, to compare the alternately small and large annual growth-rings from trees from a given climate region-in this case as far west as Bosnia and as far east as Erzurum-and to match them so that a unique year-by-year growth profile may be developed. By means of this a precise date determination, accurate even to the year in which the wood was cut, is possible. See Kuniholm (1995) for a fuller discussion of the method; and then see Kuniholm and Striker (1983; 1987) and Kuniholm (1996) for earlier date-lists of Ottoman, post-Byzantine, and Byzantine buildings, including brief notices of dates for a dozen more dated Ottoman buildings, principally in Greece, and additional notices of sampled but not yet dated buildings which are not repeated here. What follows is a compilation, in reverse chronological order, of over fifty dated buildings or sites (more if one counts their constituent parts) from the nineteenth century back to the twelfth (Figure 4.1). Some are major monuments (imperial mosques, sarays, sifayes) clearly deserving of more comprehensive treatment than can be pro- vided here; others (tiirbes, mescits, obscure medreses, and private houses) are little-known, perhaps even unheard of except to special- ists; but all help to form part of the tree-ring sequence which begins with the rings of trees still standing in Turkish forests and extends in an unbroken chain to A.D.360 for oak, A.D.743 for pine, and A.D.1037 for juniper.

The story of the transmission of the Halvetiye Sufi order from geographical and political margins to the imperial center in both ideological and physical sense underlines Amasya’s contribution to the making of the socio-religious scene of the Ottoman capital at its formative stages. The city exerted its agency as it urbanized, “Ottomanized” and catapulted marginalized Halvetiye Sufi order to Istanbul where the Ottoman socio-religious fabric was in the making. This study constitutes one of the first broad-ranging histories of an Ottoman Sufi order, as a social group shaped by regional networks of politics and patronage in the formative fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
