Nánai Erika A Han birodalom születése Xiang Yu évkönyve A történetíró feljegyzéseiben1 I. Bevezetés Amikor i. e. 221-ben Ying Zheng 嬴政 (uralk. i. e. 247–210), az északnyugat- kínai Qin állam királya – hat riválisát legyőzve – a történelem folyamán először egyesítette Kínát, örökre beírta nevét a világtörténelembe. Úgy vélte, dinasztiája az idők végezetéig – kínai kifejezéssel: „tízezer nemzedéken át” – fenn fog maradni, ezért uralkodói névnek csupán egy sorszámot választott: ő lett Qin Shi Huangdi 秦始皇帝, vagyis Qin Első Császára.2 Qin Shi Huangdi sikerei csúcsán építtette fel a kínai történelem egyik legnagyobb palotaegyüttesét, hegynyi síremlékét, valamint a mai Nagy Fal elődjét,3 és számos dicsőítő feliratot állíttatott magáról az országban.4 Qin Shi Huangdi i. e. 210-ben bekövetkezett halála után trónja tehetségtelen, öntelt és könnyen befolyásolható – legalábbis az utókor által ilyennek ábrázolt – fiára szállt, aki uralkodását azzal kezdte, hogy fivéreit lemészároltatta. A Második Császár (Qin Er Shi Huangdi 秦二始皇帝) azonban csupán néhány éven át uralkodott, i. e. 207-ben saját kegyence végzett vele. Ekkor a birodalom már lángokban állt, minden tartományában felkelések törtek ki, s a Qin-ház harmadik uralkodója már fel sem merte venni a „császár” (huangdi 皇帝) címet, hanem 1 Az alábbi cikk a 2005-ben elkészült szakdolgozatom átdolgozott változata. 2 Az Első Császár életéről, tevékenységéről, jelentőségéről lásd a nyugati nyelven megjelent egyik legjobb monográfiát: Bodde 1938. Magyarul lásd Ecsedy 1992: 14–21; Gernet 2001: 98–102; Polonyi 1994: 34–41. 3 Qin Shi Huangdi építkezéseiről lásd Thilo 1985: 67–68. 4 A feliratok többségét szó szerint közli a Shiji 6. fejezete, Qin Shi Huangdi évkönyve (Shiji 6: 480–664). Martin Kern (2000) egy egész kötetet szentelt Qin Shi Huangdi feliratainak. A Shijire a továbbiakban a következőképpen hivatkozunk: „[Shiji] [fejezet száma]: [oldalszám a pekingi Zhonghua Shuju 1963-as, illetve 2010-es kiadásában]. A Hanshura való hivatkozások ehhez hasonlóan, a Zhonghua Shuju 1962-es kiadására történnek. A lázadók visszaállították a régi

oxford world’s classics THE FIRST EMPEROR Sima Qian’s Historical Records (Shiji), from which this selection is taken, is the most famous Chinese historical work, which not only established a pattern for later Chinese historical writing, but was also much admired for its literary qualities, not only in China, but also in Japan, where it became available as early as the eighth cen- tury ad. The work is vast and complex, and to appreciate its nature it is necessary to make a selection of passages concerning a particu- lar period. To this end the short-lived Qin Dynasty, which unified China in the late third century bc, has been chosen for this transla- tion as a key historical period which well illustrates Sima’s method. Sima himself lived from 145 bc to about 86 bc. He inherited the post of Grand Historiographer from his father, and was so deter- mined to complete his work that he suffered the penalty of castra- tion rather than the more honourable alternative of death when he fell foul of the Emperor. • The Opening of Japan
i i i i West Bohemian Historical Review VI j 2016 j 1 The Opening of Japan Eliška Lebedová∗ Since the first half of the 17th century Japan closed itself against the influence of the outside world. Only the Dutch traders could under strict restrictions enter the port of Nagasaki. This policy of so-called sakoku (isolation) was one of the cornerstones of the Tokugawa bakufu. However, since the turn of the 18th and 19th century the ships of the western pow- ers started to gain interest in the seas around Japan. The ruling Tokugawa regime was nevertheless anxious of the internal consequences of the opening of the country and turned away any effort of western Great Powers to open Japan to foreign trade. This policy was not however backed by military ability to repulse the foreigners if they came and tried to open Japan by force. The arrival of powerful fleet of Commodore Perry in 1853 therefore compelled the bakufu to sign a first treaty opening its ports to western country. Treaties with other countries followed soon and at the end of the 50s Japan had to sign a series of unequal treaties under the pressure of the Great Powers. This was a start of a whole new period of Japanese history. [Japan; Great Britain; United States; Russia; France; diplomacy; international relations; trade] Japan1 had always been an isolated and insular country due to its remote location. Foreign relations were limited to its relatively close neighbours in Asia. Trade agreements concluded in the 15th century with Korea and China led to the brisk exchange of goods, which was, however, accompa- nied by increased activities of Japanese pirates (wako¯) and Chinese smug- glers on the Chinese-Korean coast.2 Traders also sailed from Japan to Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.
