The arrival of America in Japan had initiated the ‘wind of change’ to new era towards Japan culture albeit its contribution to Japan proffers other values at all cost. The study aims to emphasize the importance of history in globalization era by learning Japan's process in accepting western culture. By learning historical occurrences, cultural conflicts can be avoided or minimized in global setting. The importance of awareness has accentuated an understanding of forbearance in cultural diversity perspectives and the significance of diplomatic relation for peace. Systematic literature review is applied as the method to analyze the advent of America, forming of treaty, Sakoku Policy, Diplomatic relationship, and Jesuit- Franciscans conflict. The treaty formed between Japan and America served as the bridge for Japan to enter westernization. SPIRITS AND IDENTITY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NORTHEASTERN JAPAN: HIRATA KOKUGAKU AND THE TSUGARU DISCIPLES by Gideon Fujiwara A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2013 © Gideon Fujiwara, 2013 ABSTRACT While previous research on kokugaku , or nativism, has explained how intellectuals imagined the singular community of Japan, this study sheds light on how posthumous disciples of Hirata Atsutane based in Tsugaru juxtaposed two “countries”—their native Tsugaru and Imperial Japan—as they transitioned from early modern to modern society in the nineteenth century. This new perspective recognizes the multiplicity of community in “Japan,” which encompasses the domain, multiple levels of statehood, and “nation,” as uncovered in recent scholarship. My analysis accentuates the shared concerns of Atsutane and the Tsugaru nativists toward spirits and the spiritual realm, ethnographic studies of commoners, identification with the north, and religious thought and worship. I chronicle the formation of this scholarly community through their correspondence with the head academy in Edo (later Tokyo), and identify their autonomous character. Hirao Rosen conducted ethnography of Tsugaru and the “world” through visiting the northern island of Ezo in 1855, and observing Americans, Europeans, and Qing Chinese stationed there. I show how Rosen engaged in self-orientation and utilized Hirata nativist theory to locate Tsugaru within the spiritual landscape of Imperial Japan. Through poetry and prose, leader Tsuruya Ariyo identified Mount Iwaki as a sacred pillar of Tsugaru, and insisted one could experience “enjoyment” from this life and beyond death in the realm of spirits. -

The Position of Japan in Asia In 2006, Prof. Kenichi Ohno of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Japan and a number of young Vietnamese scholars translated Tadao Umesao’s book An Ecological View of the History of Japanese Civilization in the World Context. We were very impressed by Prof. Umesao’s unique interpretation of Japanese culture in the context of the Asian and world civilization. He argues that the world consists of two regions. The first region covers both coastal and island na- tions, one of which is Japan. The second region comprises continental nations that in the past were dominated by great empires such as China, India, the Ottomans and Russia. Those empires always sought to conquer other agricultural and nomadic peoples. Meanwhile, the coastal and island states of the first region absorbed advanced culture. Thus, originally “peripheral and uncivilized” states could rise and finally establish their own empires. Prof. Umesao argues that the Western Pacific region, where Japan is located, has similar characteristics and conditions to the Mediterranean region.1 In the history of Asia, cultural exchanges always went hand-in-hand with cultural conflict. Many na- tions became the victims of political pressure by great powers and regional empires. The great powers’ territorial expansionism and pursuit of natural resources often disrupted traditional relations and de- stroyed cultural heritages.2 As for the case of Japan, from the Nara period (710‒794) through the Heian (794‒1185), Kamakura (1185‒1333), Muromachi (1336‒1590) and Edo periods (1600‒1867), its rulers always looked towards continental China. -

According to his journal, when Commodore Matthew C. The End of a Commercial Era: From the English Junk Affair to the Vietnamese Maritime Embargo in 1693✽ Hoang Anh Tuan✽✽ Associate Professor of History University of Social Sciences and Humanities Vietnam National University, Hanoi ABSTRACT According to the English records, on Christmas Day 1693, the King of Tonkin issued an edict forbidding Vietnamese people from leaving the country on board foreign ships. Subsequent developments depicted the Vietnamese Court’s strict regulation, ending an era of relatively liberal maritime trade and travel. Surprisingly, the Vietnamese Court’s maritime embargo was not recorded anywhere in the Vietnamese chronicles. Using new data retrieved from the English archives, this article highlights the “English Junk Affair” in 1693 which subsequently led to the Vietnamese Court’s imposition of a maritime embargo, practically ending the commercial era of Tonkin. It also places the English mis- fortune in the context of local socio-economic changes as well as the transfor- mation of the regional maritime commerce which largely contributed to the English withdrawal from northern Vietnam during the late seventeenth century. A Handbook for Women's Tea in the Nineteenth Century
Chapter 3 A Handbook for Women’s Tea in the Nineteenth Century ecords of tea gatherings show that female attendants occasionally accompanied their mistresses at these Revents (discussed in chapter 1). At tea gatherings, women usually sat alongside men, both those from the same household and out- siders. These gatherings were thus a space in which female attendants could interact socially with others in a household-based network of tea practice. High-ranking wives who were tea practitioners themselves may have expected their female attendants also to be proficient at the art. Perhaps prospective employees may have had to demonstrate their abil- ity to do tea at their interview. Lessons may have been given to atten- dants within the household from a tea master or an experienced female practitioner. On sugoroku board games, depictions of attendants engag- ing in tea practice suggest that private study of tea could be part of the lives of female attendants in elite households. Who were the women who went into service at elite households, and what did being in service entail? This chapter addresses these questions and examines the motiva- tions for women to enter into service, before moving on to discuss the connection between tea culture and service specifically. The chapter concludes with a case study of tea practice among women of the Ii household in the nineteenth century. The handbook for women’s tea penned by Oguchi Shōō in the eighteenth century was pri- vately circulated among like-minded samurai tea practitioners in manu- script form. In the nineteenth century, the daimyo and tea master Ii Naosuke transcribed and amended his own copy of A Woman’s Hand- book, which he circulated among the women of his household, including family members and female attendants. -

More than 90 of these screens survive today. They possess substantial historical value because they display scenes of the first European activities in Japan. Among the subjects depicted on Namban screens, some of the most intriguing are ships: the European ships of the Age of Discovery. Namban screens were created by skillful Japanese traditional painters who had the utmost respect for detail, and yet the European ships they depicted are often anachronistic and strangely. On maps of the Age of Discovery, the author discovered representations of ships that are remarkably similar to the ships represented on the Namban screens. -

Hommes, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2004 In the Bakumatsu period (1853-1868), Japan experienced many changes and challenges. One of these challenges was regarding how to learn from the West and how to use that knowledge in the building of Japan. One of the most important institutions for such Western learning was the Bansho Shirabesho, an institution created by the Tokugawa government in 1856 to translate Western materials, provide a school for Japanese scholars, and to censor the translations of Western works. This institution eventually gave language instruction in Dutch, English, French, German, and Russian and it also gave instruction in many other practical subjects such as military science and production. This thesis examines in detail how the Shirabesho was founded, what some of the initial difficulties were and how successful it was in accomplishing the tasks it was given. It also assesses the legacy of the Shirabesho in helping to bridge the transition between the Tokugawa period’s emphasis on feudal rank and the Meiji’s emphasis on merit. -

B E A - ye • A PORTUGUESE EMBASSY TO SIAM IN 1595 AND SOME CURIOUS OBSERVATIONS Teotónio R.deSouza We have utilized here seven chapters of the First Book (fis. 21-53) of the original of La Vida de Jaques de Couttre, catalogued as Ms. 2780 in the National Library of Madrid. The account describes the diplomatic manipulations by a Dominican friar who took control of the embassy and many other intrigues and quarrels among the Portuguese officials and others. Couttre (also spelt Coutre) includes in his account of Siam many curious observations from his eight months' stay in Ayutthaya. Couttre, a Flemish jewel-trader, travelled to India as a soldier in September 1592 and spent nearly three decades in the Estado la India before he was arrested by the Goa Inquisition and packed off to Lisbon in 1623. He had travelled widely in South India and in South-East Asia, and was able to satisfy his desire to see places by combining the roles of a soldado, jewel-trader and member of some embassies of the Portuguese Malaccan authorities to the neighbouring kingdoms. We have made use of Couttre's account in our PhD thesis, published as Medieval Goa (1979). More recently G.D. Winius has given us an account of Couttre 's jewel-trading activities in India. 1 Our "A New Account of the Diamond Mines of the Deccan" has drawn further details from Couttre's text.' This complements Official sources and other contemporary private accounts giving insight into the Portuguese grande soltura, or the free trade and piracy that we can glean from the Peregrinação of Fernão Mendes Pinto. -

People's revolutions The one hundred years between the late-seventeenth and late-eighteenth centuries saw the transformation of Europe's political landscape. In Great Britain, the king and the parliament had long squabbled over political and religious issues. When conflict over religious policies intensified in 1688, parliament invited a new king from the Netherlands to take the throne. The new king took power without bloodshed and sent the old king into exile. This event, known as the Glorious Revolution, consolidated the parliamentary system and turned Britain into a constitutional monarchy.1 *1=In a constitutional monarchy, the powers of the monarch are limited by the constitution and representatives chosen by the citizens run the country's government. Great Britain's American colonies increasingly resisted the political repression and heavy taxation imposed by their king, and finally launched an armed rebellion to achieve independence. The rebels released the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and later enacted the Constitution of the United States, establishing a new nation with a political system based on a separation of powers.2 *2=Under a separation of powers, the powers of the government are split into three independent branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. In 1789, an angry mob of Parisian citizens, who groaned under oppressively heavy taxes, stormed the Bastille Prison, an incident that sparked numerous rural and urban revolts throughout France against the king and the aristocracy.
