Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

September 13, 2014: First two-year advanced course for Catholic lay leaders ends with celebration in Beijing’s South Church Every Saturday for two years, the 73 graduates, aged 25–55, had taken part in all-day classes in 18 subjects such as: philosophy, sacred scripture, Church doctrine, theology, Church history, spirituality, Church music and comparative religion. The goals of the course are to educate lay persons as teachers to prepare catechumens for baptism, to train them for evangelization as well as to improve the general “quality of faith” of China’s Catholic laity. According to reports published in the Shijiazhuang Catholic newspaper Xinde (Faith, Sept. 25), following the closing ceremony, the next advanced course began with 57 participants.     The Christian Church as a Civil Society Organization: A Preliminary Survey of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan1 Zhidong Hao During the period of opening and reform in mainland China, the role of religion in sociopolitical and economic development has become increasingly important. It is true that because of sociopolitical constraints, it will take a while for religion on the mainland to catch up with Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan in influence, and different religions in different places also have different influences. But religions in mainland China are generally catching up anyway, albeit slowly in most aspects of their influence, and a study of the similarities and differences in the role of religion in the four regions of Greater China (in its cultural and historical sense) is also more important than ever before. As part of that effort, this paper compares the Christian Church, both Catholic and Protestant, in the four regions of Greater China to see the extent to which it is a civil society organization (CSO) as well as what roles it plays. In my view, the Christian Church is indeed a CSO, but because of different sociopolitical situations, the extent to which the Church can play its usual role, and the ways in which this role is played, differs across regions. Understandably, the Church faces many more difficulties in serving as a CSO on the mainland than in other places, especially in the Xi Jinping era with frequent crackdowns,2 and thus is weaker. All things considered, as a CSO, the Christian Church appears to be the strongest in Hong Kong, followed by Taiwan and Macau, with mainland China trailing behind.

    Statistics on Religions and Churches in the People’s Republic of China – Update for the Year 2017 Katharina Wenzel-Teuber With a contribution1 by Isabel Hess-Friemann The annual compilation of figures and dates concerning the life of the religions in the Peo- ple’s Republic of China begins this time with surveys made by Chinese academics on the phenomenon of “cyber religion.” They attempt a review of this comparatively young form of dissemination of religion and analyze the interest of the general public in this topic on the Internet. The question of popular beliefs continues to occupy Chinese researchers; we bring an example from the Province of Guangdong. In addition we present the official educational institutes of the Protestant Church and figures for the growth of Protestant Christianity among ethnic minorities in the People’s Republic. In the Catholic Church of China the numbers of baptisms were compiled for the entire year for the first time. There was an unusually high number of priestly ordinations in 2017 but not a single bishop was consecrated, although nine bishops died during the year and many dioceses are vacant. The statistical update on China’s religions is supplemented by data from older surveys, official information and estimations. Depending on the source, the details often vary widely. Unless otherwise stated, the figures refer to Mainland China. 1. Religions on the Internet For the religions in China which otherwise have very limited access to the general Chi- nese public, the Internet and later the social media, due to their broad prevalence among the Chinese population, have opened up new possibilities for internal networking and reaching the secular society.
