The Prose Edda
THE PROSE EDDA SNORRI STURLUSON (1179–1241) was born in western Iceland, the son of an upstart Icelandic chieftain. In the early thirteenth century, Snorri rose to become Iceland’s richest and, for a time, its most powerful leader. Twice he was elected law-speaker at the Althing, Iceland’s national assembly, and twice he went abroad to visit Norwegian royalty. An ambitious and sometimes ruthless leader, Snorri was also a man of learning, with deep interests in the myth, poetry and history of the Viking Age. He has long been assumed to be the author of some of medieval Iceland’s greatest works, including the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, the latter a saga history of the kings of Norway. JESSE BYOCK is Professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Professor at UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. A specialist in North Atlantic and Viking Studies, he directs the Mosfell Archaeological Project in Iceland. Prof. Byock received his Ph.D. from Harvard University after studying in Iceland, Sweden and France. His books and translations include Viking Age Iceland, Medieval Iceland: Society, Sagas, and Power, Feud in the Icelandic Saga, The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki and The Saga of the Volsungs: The Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer. The Spaewife’s Prophecy: A Verse Translation of the Norse Poem Vǫluspá, with an Introduction and Notes JUDITH WOOLF ABSTRACT: The epic poem Vǫluspá, in which an ancient seeress foretells to Odin the tragic fate awaiting his son Baldr and the eventual destruction of the gods at Ragnarǫk, is an acknowledged masterpiece of medieval literature. However, outside the world of Norse studies it remains surprisingly little known. Vǫluspá was composed in pre-literate Iceland and transmitted through performance for several centuries before being committed to vellum, but none of the available English translations (including W. H. Auden’s less than faithful version) were written to be read aloud, making the poem much less likely to be included in university courses on European or world literature. My verse translation, The Spaewife’s Prophecy, attempts to convey the enigmatic power of the original text, while the notes are intended both to make the poem accessible to readers unfamiliar with Norse mythology and also to situate it in the material and cultural world of the Icelanders. The Nordic Gods The Nordic gods were worshipped by the Vikings in the era 900AD - 1100AD. Belief in the gods existed before this time, but it was not organized and the myth would differ from region to region. The gods were called the Asa Gods, or the anglified Aesir. There were also nature gods called the Vana Gods or Vanir. The religion was called asatro, in English Asatru, which means Asa Faith. In time a rich mythology with many gods and tales would emerge, although it can be seen in some cases that various gods were strangely similar to each other in either names or functions; this is a result of the effort to merge disparate beliefs into one mythology. For example, Oden and his wife Frigg appear much the same as Freya and her husband Od, and the sea gods Ägir and Njord have very much the same function. Other times the same deity has several names; Måne and Natt is one example. The strength of the mythology in daily life would vary. It is clear that Nordic mythology was the lense through which the world was explained, but it was never a fervent belief; like other polytheistic faiths it was relaxed and the result of spontaneous growth, not an organized effort. In times and places of great wealth the mythology would take richer forms, such as the great temple in Upsala, which was a center of worship for travellers from many regions. In this temple there were priests who would lead the worship, and there would sometimes be priests in larger villages, usually old men from wealthy families who could no longer work the fields. -

Here is an nth translation of Völuspá, a poem of poetic Edda. It is essentially different from the others in that it provides information on the suspicions of Christian influences associated to one or another of its stanzas ... and that it shows that, most often, these so-called suspicions are based on commonalities of words used in very different contexts in Völuspá and in the Christians texts supposed to have been inspiring it. On ‘Christian influences’ It is clear that all the manuscripts of the poetic Edda were written in a social context where being Christian was compulsory and paganism banned. Their content has thus been more than less overseen by Church authorities. Looking for ‘Christian influences’ in these texts is to behave as a supposed civilization carrier sifting the good Christian wheat from the pagan chaff. Colonizers mistreated ‘prime’ civilizations in good conscience in the name of the intellectual superiority of European thought. Modern commentators looking for Christian influences in Eddic texts mistreat them by challenging their authenticity. For example, the myth of ‘Baldr’s death’ is classically supposed to have received a Christian influence due to his ‘obvious’ similarity with Christ and Frigg’s cries? Indeed, Frigg cries for her bloody son. And his father also mourns his son - all this can reflect a Christian behavior. -
