This phenomenon questions the coexistence of different languages within local music practices. In this article, I argue that we cannot fully understand this issue without addressing the sacred dimension of language in popular music, which entails two aspects: 1) the transitory experience of an ideal that challenges intelligibility, and 2) the entanglement with social norms and institutions. Further to which, I compare Latin hegemony during the Middle Ages and the contemporary French popular music, where English and French coexist in a context marked by globalisation and ubiquitous digital technologies.

Conviviality and parties are a Parisian way of life. From cafes to innovative clubs, from legendary cabarets to gardens that are open throughout the night, Paris has something for everyone to enjoy in an ever-growing diversely cultural milieu. Paris City Hall helps the city’s nightlife scene to find new event spaces, such as basements and the city’s former ‘petite ceinture’ railway line, to continue to promote nightlife that is varied, open-spirited, and benevolent.’ Frédéric Hocquard, Deputy Mayor of Paris, in charge of Nightlife and Cultural Economy NIGHT & DAY PARIS FESTIVE 2 → Press file 2018 – Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau EDITORIAL BY THE AUTHORS This file on Festive Paris: Night & Day aims to show you just what a great place to party Paris is in the 21st century. 2018 is a year full of challenges for partying in Paris. Parisian nightlife is ever-changing. It is being reinvented and shaken up by new projects for night owls and party people. Nightlife is now more than ever for those in the know. The night has become multi-faceted, itinerant, and scattered, partly due to land constraints. Many capital cities have lost their music venues to residential developments. As Paris is resistant to ‘giga clubs’, partying is developing beyond the city’s ring road and being enjoyed by people in the Greater Paris area.

McKrell 1 Teddy McKrell Professor Sonevytsky Music, Sexuality & Gender 2 June 2018 Standing Next To Me The Last Shadow Puppets are a rock supergroup fronted by Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane. They released their first album The Age of the Understatement in 2008, then went back to their respective projects before getting back together in 2016 to release Everything You’ve Come to Expect. While there was not much of a tour for their first album, they performed together a few times in the interim, and their 2016 album had a much more aggressive tour schedule. Over the course of their recent album’s promotion and subsequent tour, Miles and Alex played up what British GQ and NME both termed “a certain bromance” in entirely different articles, playing off the title of a song from the Arctic Monkeys’ first album (Lynskey 2016; Perry 2016). At times, Miles and Alex’s interactions seem like the joke these publications assume it to be; often in interviews it feels as if the two are egging each other on. However, in live performance their interactions tend to take on a different tone, one that oscillates between moments that are clearly staged, even choreographed, and more spontaneous moments that feel sincerely intimate. Neither Miles nor Alex has actually said anything official regarding their sexuality, so it is entirely possible for one or both to be a member of the LGBT community. However, it is also possible that both are heterosexual men who have never felt the need to publicly identify as such.

  • Sonic Blooms in Taipei
TAIPEI TIMES MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 , 2 0 0 8 PAGE 1 3 [ THE WEEKENDER ] Sonic blooms in Taipei BY DAVId CHen AND DIane BAKer STAFF REPORTErs ianist Hiromi Uehara and her three-piece ensemble Sonicbloom performed for a rapt audience last Thurs- P day at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, in an intense, imaginative show that spanned jazz, funk, and classical music. Being in Taipei revived strong memories for the 29-year- old Japanese musician, who said at a press conference the day before the show that her first-ever public performance was in Taipei at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall (國父紀念館) when she was 12. Uehara started the evening with a short piano solo in 1920s stride-style, which immediately broke into a fusion jazz rendition of Softly as in a Morning Sunrise. Images of the moon and stars were projected onto the curtains behind the band, which set the mood for the aptly-titled Time Travel. In this challenging but engaging tune, Uehara’s spacy synthesizer sounds and Dave Fiuczynski’s electric guitar riffs built oblique melodic themes around shifting rhythms. Uehara often sounds like she’s trying to squeeze as many notes as she can in one phrase, yet her playing still manages to sound lyrical and soulful, as it did in the band’s rendition of the Duke Ellington classic Caravan. Her playing has a light, joyful quality, even at rapid speeds. At times she sounded like she was playing cartoon chase scenes; other times her melody lines were so astonishingly frantic, you could hear people in Musician Juliana Hatfield at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Aug.
