New York City's premier jazz venue got the blues last April when Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton performed together in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center for two sold-out shows dedicated to vintage blues. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis.

Reprise Records captures the magic of these unprecedented shows from earlier this year on CD and as a CD/DVD combo that both feature selections taken from the two public concerts (April 8-9), as well a special performance for Jazz at Lincoln Center's annual gala (April 7). Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and nine-time Grammy® Award winner, writes about his collaboration with Clapton, a 19-time Grammy recipient, in the album's liner notes: "...we wanted these concerts to sound like people playing music they know and love, not like a project."

The band nimbly navigated a diverse set list that touched on different styles, from the four-on-the-floor swing of Louis Armstrong's "Ice Cream" and the southern slow-drag of W.C. Handy's "Joe Turner's Blues" to the traveling blues of "Joliet Bound" and the boogie-woogie jump of "Kidman Blues." After opening the shows with his solo set, Mahal returned to join the band on "Corrine, Corrina" and the New Orleans funeral standard "Just A Closer Walk With Thee."

Progressive metal band Dream Theater formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy. Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists "without any hesitation" she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. "Seriously, we had only known one another for a few days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and natural thing to do" recalls Zucconi.

On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band Grouplove a year before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born and bred in London instantly bonded with the two eccentric New Yorkers. Their relationship became apparent through the music they were making day in and day out. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These five musicians make up the members of what we now know as Grouplove.

Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes all over the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los Angeles Grouplove was faced with the challenge of what to do now. "We all understood how rare it is for five strangers to feel as close as family and create passionate music together. We couldn't just return to Brooklyn and let the music we all made fade into a memory of that summer we had in Greece," explains Zucconi. Everyone pulled their funds together and Sean, Christian and Hannah made their way to Ryan Rabin's studio in LA to record their album. "We seriously had the best time of our lives doing that record", says Zucconi. And the result is an incredibly special album where soaring harmonies coupled with sweeping anthems lead you through their powerful journey. Like the members of Grouplove, their music is diverse in influence and style but bonded together by an undeniably creative kinship.

Their experience back together and recording together was so potent that Hooper and Zucconi packed up their lives in Brooklyn and moved to LA to live and play their music.

"We never could have dreamt this up" says Zucconi, "but at the same time we're not at all surprised - GROUPLOVE is meant to be. Our story a testament to fate, and our music is something we are ready to share."

With his blend of 50's rock & roll, pop and traditional country, Steve Holy has crafted a unique sound that has won fans over across the nation. Refusing to be labeled musically and sticking to his country roots, Steve cites country greats Charlie Rich, Mickey Gilley and John Conlee as his influences but is quick to add that Elvis, Sam Cooke and a variety of Doo-Wop bands play a major role in his vocal style and on-stage persona.

"I really don't want to be labeled. The majority of my influences are from the traditional country genre, but I feel a connection to the music made in the 50's and 60's,” says Holy. “My heart is there in that style of music. It was really heartfelt back then and I'm into the simplicity of the music. It’s how I want to make music--simply heartfelt.

Steve's engaging stage performance alone has created a loyal following. Although his primary objective is to connect with them on an up-close and personal basis, he naturally and unconsciously dazzles fans and listeners alike capturing them immediately. Frankly, Steve Holy is charming, charismatic and captivating.

In 1997, Steve signed with Curb Records launching his debut album Blue Moon in October 2000. The initial offering, dubbed "5090" by Rack Clark of Dick Clark Productions for its tribute to both the 1950's and 1990's era, included a swing-driven single entitled "Don't Make Me Beg" which was released as Steve's debut single from the album setting his course in motion.

Steve enjoyed incredible success to jump-start his musical career. His second single from the album, Blue Moon , featuring more traditional country sounds, was released in April 2000 and climbed all the way to number 19 on the country charts. His third single, "The Hunger," delivered a pop-folk feel and made it to number 20. Just eighteen months after the release of the album Steve's fourth single "Good Morning Beautiful," for which he is most widely recognized, charted at number 1 for five straight weeks in 2002. "Good Morning Beautiful" was also named to Billboard’s Top Country Songs of the decade, 1999-2009, at number 10.

Steve's long awaited 2nd CD, Brand New Girlfriend was released August 8, 2006 debuting at number two on the country charts. Singles from this album included "Brand New Girlfriend," "Come On Rain," "Men Buy The Drinks" and finally "Baby Don't Go." Steve earned his second number 1 single with "Brand New Girlfriend," also named the number 1 dance song for 2006.

Steve has had several of his tunes appear on movie soundtracks:

The first single, entitled "Love Don't Run," from the much awaited project was released to radio in January of 2011 and quickly climbed the country radio charts being named a Top 5 most added single in the first week of 2011 by Billboard and Country Aircheck. Time Life is proud to release this new 3-CD set: HANK WILLIAMS: THE LEGEND BEGINS: RARE AND UNRELEASED RECORDINGS. It's another unique glimpse into the musical career of country music's greatest star who passed away in 1953 at the age of 29. Framed Basic T-Shirt STILL MORE TO DISCOVER: No one knew in 1938 that when a teenager made his first recording in the kitchen of a famed DJ in Montgomery, Alabama, that the teen would go on to become the King of Country Music. Decades later, that DJ, Uncle Bob Helton, met Hank's daughter Jett, telling her he had something from her father. Audio engineers at the Country Music Hall of Fame weren't sure what to make of the acetate until an engineer put his thumb on the spinning disc to slow it down -- at that point they heard Hank's first recordings: a blues song called Fan It, along with Alexander's Ragtime Band. These songs survived on an acetate that was recorded at around 60 RPM (not 33, 45 or 78); the fragile acetate coating was already flaking off the disc...another year or two and it would have been unplayable and lost forever!

In addition to this unbelievable find, THE LEGEND BEGINS: RARE AND UNRELEASED RECORDINGS features four previously unreleased recordings from 1940. Jett bought this rare acetate at auction from a collector, giving us San Antonio Rose, St. Louis Blues, Greenback Dollars and Freight Train.

Rounding out this amazing collection are eight 15-minute recordings for the Health and Happiness shows, Hank's first syndicated radio series sponsored by a manufacturer of a patent cure-all, Hadacol. He sings his hits like Lovesick Blues, Lost Highway, and A Mansion on the Hill, plus mixes in hymns and songs that he never recorded elsewhere, including Tramp on the Street... reckoned to be one of his most compelling performances.

Banda Machos: One of the leaders in the Banda music movement for almost twenty years, Banda Macho’s breakthrough came after issuing Sangre de Indio, featuring a style known as la quebradita, popularized in Los Angeles' Latin circuit in the early '90s. In 1993, Banda Machos was awarded by Univisión's Lo Nuestro for Revelation of the Year in the Mexican/Regional category, achieving a Furia Musical award for Best Mexican Band in 1995. In 1996, banda machos was also awarded a Grammy for best Mexican – Banda artist. Today, they have achieved numerous Gold and Platinum records and continue to be one of the hardest working, touring Mexican acts in the U.S and Mexico.

Banda Pequeños Musical were born in 1990, made up of eight young musicians under the direction of Rogelio Garcia. The band formed in Cajititlan de los Reyes, Jalisco, Mexico. Banda Pequeños Musical became known for their versatility and romantic style. It wasn't long before they boasted the title La Banda Mas Romantica de America. After a couple of releases through independent labels, BPM signed with Warner-MCM. Afterwards, they witnessed numerous hit releases and sold out concerts throughout the states and Mexico. Their first release with Warner was one of their biggest records titled En Grande.

He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, filmmakers and legendary musicians. But it is his work as a leader that has garnered increasing attention and accolades. The New York Times described Frisell’s music this way: “It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness.” Frisell’s recordings over the last decades span a wide range of musical influences. His catalog, including 20 recordings for Nonesuch, has been cited by DownBeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” It includes original Buster Keaton film scores to arrangements of music for extended ensemble with horns (This Land, Blues Dream); compositions originally written as soundtracks to Gary Larson cartoons (Quartet); interpretations of work by other classic and contemporary American composers (Have a Little Faith); and collaborations with the acclaimed rhythm section of bassist Viktor Krauss and drummer Jim Keltner (Gone, Just Like a Train; Good Dog, Happy Man). ARTIST & INFO Through regular performances with major orchestras, recitals in the world's music capitals, and acclaimed Nonesuch recordings, pianist Richard Goode has won a large and devoted following. The New Yorker has said, "What one remembers most from Goode's playing is not its beauty-exceptional as it is-but his way of coming to grips with the composer's central thought, so that a work tends to make sense beyond one's previous perception of it ... The spontaneous formulating process of the creator [becomes] tangible in the concert hall." And according to the New York Times, "It is virtually impossible to walk away from one of Mr. Goode's recitals without the sense of having gained some new insight, subtly or otherwise, into the works he played or about pianism itself."

In 2007-2008, Richard Goode has performed and curated a multi-event residency at the South Bank Centre in London as the year's Artist-in-Residence, and has performed recitals in such cities as Berlin, Paris, Milan, Toronto, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Berkeley. His orchestral appearances include the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of James Levine at Tanglewood, the London Philharmonic with Kurt Masur, the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Ivan Fisher, the New York Philharmonic with Sir Colin Davis, the San Francisco Symphony with Alan Gilbert, and the Radio Philharmonique in Paris with Peter Oundjian. In addition to his "engrossing" (New York Times) eight-event Carnegie Hall Perspectives in 2005-2006, Richard Goode was invited to hold master classes at the City's three leading conservatories-Juilliard, Manhattan, and Mannes-and to give two illustrated talks on his Perspectives repertoire at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the 2006-2007 season, he was honored for his contributions to music with the first ever Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance, which culminated in a residency at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

During the 2006-2007 season, Richard Goode played recitals in the major music capitals in Europe and the United States, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Edinburgh, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. His orchestral appearances last season included the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the baton of Ivan Fisher and the DSO Berlin with Herbert Blomstedt.

A native of New York, Richard Goode studied with Elvira Szigeti and Claude Frank, with Nadia Reisenberg at the Mannes College of Music, and with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute. Nearly 40 years ago, Grateful Dead released Europe '72 , a triple live album documenting its historic trek across Europe that became not only one of the band's best-selling releases, but also set the gold standard for live Dead. Now the group proves you can never get too much of a good thing when it revisits that legendary collection with Europe '71 Vol. 2, an essential continuation of the original that includes more than two hours of unreleased performances from that storied tour.

Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux, who produced this 20-track compilation, says he only chose song titles that did not appear on Europe '72 as a way to complement the original. "I think this album, coupled with Europe '72, represents a complete overview of the tour in every way," he says. "In fact, songs like ‘Beat It On Down The Line,' ‘Next Time You See Me' and ‘Sing Me Back Home' were selected by the Grateful Dead for the first set, but were left off because there wasn't enough room."

In a nod to the original, Vol. 2 features new cover art by Stanley Mouse, the artist who helped create the iconic artwork from Europe '72 , which features the return of the legendary Ice Cream Kid. "Trouble comes in many flavors. Ice Cream Kid is in hot water. The jury is out. His only defense is love," says Mouse of the Kid's return.

Recorded at various locations during the band's 22-show tour, the collection captures the Dead in white-hot moments of improvisational revelry as the band explores a number of its most enduring songs, like "Bertha," "Sugaree" and "Playing In the Band," plus relatively obscure cuts like "Black-Throated Wind" and Pigpen's "Chinatown Shuffle."

As a special treat, the set includes an epic hour-plus jam that combines "Dark Star" and "The Other One." Recorded at the Bickershaw Festival, it was the only show on this tour where the band broke out both of these beloved improvisational showpieces. VOL. 2 also includes "Good Lovin'" and "Dire Wolf" from the April 26 show at Jahrhundert Halle in Frankfurt, West Germany. While much of that concert was released on 1995's Hundred Year Hall, these particular tracks were not included and have remained unreleased until now.

The high-quality sound heard on Vol. 2 stems from painstaking work done by Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of the Dead's archival multi-track material for the past 15 years. For this release, he mixed each show from the original 16-track recordings while two-time Grammy®-winning engineer David Glasser mastered the music to HDCD specs.

Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau's most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio. Mehldau also has a solo piano recording entitled Elegiac Cycle, and a record called Places that includes both solo piano and trio songs. Elegiac Cycle and Places might be called "concept" albums. They are made up exclusively of original material and have central themes that hover over the compositions. Other Mehldau recordings include Largo , a collaborative effort with the innovative musician and producer Jon Brion, and Anything Goes-a trio outing with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy.

Mehldau and Kevin Hays have been friends and colleagues since they both arrived on New York's jazz scene in the late 1980s, to work together. Both musicians initially came to prominence with stints in early-1990s lineups of Joshua Redman's quartet before launching successful careers as solo performers and band leaders.

Patrick Zimmerli, a mutual old friend, grew up in West Hartford, CT, playing saxophone in the same high school jazz program as Mehldau , who was two years younger. He knew Hays , also a Connecticut native, through music competitions. Zimmerli went on to study composition and has had great success in the contemporary-classical world.

Gidon Kremer has made more than one hundred recordings for a number of record labels. His most recent Nonesuch release is Happy Birthday (2003), whose release follows a disc of works by Romanian composer Georges Enescu (2002) and the Grammy Award-winning After Mozart (2001). Tracing Astor (2001) marked the third disc in a trilogy of albums celebrating the music of Astor Piazzolla, which also includes the Grammy-nominated Hommage à Piazzolla (1996) and El Tango (1997), featuring arrangements of works by Piazzolla performed by Kremer’s acclaimed Astor Quartet.

Kremer’s recordings, which have earned him a series of major international awards, have set new standards of interpretation. His repertoire is unusually extensive, encompassing all of the standard classical and Romantic violin works, as well as music by twentieth century masters. He has also championed the works of living Russian and Eastern European composers and has performed many important new compositions, of which several are dedicated to him. It is owing to his never-ending activities that we are able to appreciate composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Aribert Reimann, John Adams and Astor Piazzolla, while being able to experience classical music in a new way, one that bears tradition and at the same time remains contemporary.

Deeply committed to chamber music, his music festival in the small Austrian village of Lockenhaus, founded in 1981, is the realization of his belief that music can overcome all barriers of language and culture. Since 1992 the Lockenhaus musicians have been performing all over the world under the Kremerata Musica logo. On the occasion of Franz Schubert’s 200th birthday celebrations in 1997, they undertook a comprehensive concert cycle throughout Europe, including appearances at the Salzburg Festival.

In November 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding young musicians from the three Baltic States. The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremer in 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with Nonesuch Records, of which Eight Seasons (2000) was the inaugural release, followed by Silencio (2000) and After Mozart(2001). In 1997 Gidon Kremer also took over leadership of the Musiksommer Gstaad (Switzerland), in succession to Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

Kremer began studying the violin at the age of four with his father and grandfather, and in 1965 he became a student of David Oistrach’s master class at the Moscow Conservatory. He has since been awarded the most prestigious violinist prizes, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the Paganini Competition in Genoa, among others. He has also received many music awards such as the Frankfurt Music Award, the Ernst von Siemens Music Award, the first prize at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Federal Service Cross of Germany. Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in a beginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser and the formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. His performances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process of abstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a stripped down, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over the years, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewarding gig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz, and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade, he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernstein and Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside of the jazz idiom, like Willie Nelson's Teatro and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's Scar . His music has appeared in several movies, including Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Wim Wender's Million Dollar Hotel . He also composed an original soundtrack for the French film, Ma Femme Est Une Actrice. Mehldau also composed two new works commissioned by Carnegie Hall for voice and piano, The Blue Estuaries and The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, which were performed in the spring of 2005 with the acclaimed classical soprano, Renee Fleming. On Pat Metheny's ambitious, experimental 2010 Orchestrion -named Jazz Album of the Year in Downbeat's 2010 Reader's Poll -- -the guitarist and composer employed a phalanx of custom-made robotic instruments to create a thrilling and decidedly futuristic sort of "solo" recording. For What's It All About, he simply picked up his baritone guitar. This ten-song disc is the first in Metheny's nearly forty-year recording career to feature an entire set of material drawn from outside composers, but, as one might expect, it's far from an ordinary "covers" album. Metheny, ruminates upon, improvises around and at times deconstructs the melodies of these Top 40 numbers, songs he heard growing up in the sixties and early seventies and that have resonated with him ever since. They include such iconic tracks as "The Girl From Ipanema," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Alfie," in which the already haunting movie theme is distilled to its gorgeously melancholy essence. These intimate, unadorned performances, recorded alone by Metheny in his New York City apartment, represent a process of rediscovery more than reinterpretation. Rich with personal meaning, they are as revealing about Metheny's creative process and fertile imagination as about the malleability of the songs themselves.

What's It All About, in approach, serves as a companion to Metheny's austerely beautiful 2003 Grammy Award-winning One Quiet Night, a solo disc in which Metheny first began to explore the possibilities of his new baritone guitar. As Metheny, the recipient of 17 Grammy Awards to date, explains, "I really wanted to keep it simple - one guitar, one player, as was the case on One Quiet Night. There are no overdubs on the record. But where this one differs from One Quiet Night is that I really focused on each tune along the way. Sometimes I would sit and think about each piece for hours before hitting the record button, practicing things and imagining a final performance. There are some edits here and there where I found sort of an idealized version of what I was shooting for, but the idea was to stay true to a particular way of playing and hearing the song by again, keeping the performance aspect of it really simple....I was able to get to what I wanted just sitting there with the instrument in hand." Along with the baritone guitar, he also picks up a nylon string guitar for his rendition of the Beatles "And I Love Her"; a six-string for the Chantay's "Pipeline"; and a custom-made 42-string, harp-like Pikasso guitar for a stunning, opening-track take on "The Sounds Of Silence." Metheny's plucking of the Pikasso recalls the sound of the Japanese Koto, underscoring the contemplative nature of this enterprise.

London's The Guardian recently cited Metheny as part of its Great Moments in Jazz series, noting, "Metheny is that rare jazz musician who combines a pop-composer's instinct for an anthemic melody with a virtuoso ability to play extended spontaneous solos without repeating himself....More than any other jazz guitarist of the post-bop era, Pat Metheny has given the instrument as natural and prominent a place in jazz as a trumpet or a saxophone." Nonesuch releases Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich's WTC 9/11 on September 6, 2011. The album marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, which is the subject of Reich's piece. Commissioned for and recorded by Kronos Quartet, WTC 9/11 is scored for three string quartets and pre-recorded voices. The album also includes Reich's Mallet Quartet, performed by SÅ Percussion, and Dance Patterns, featuring members of Steve Reich and Musicians, as well as a DVD with a live performance of Mallet Quartet by SÅ Percussion.

WTC 9/11 reflects on the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, when Reich and his family lived only four blocks away from the site of the tragedy. "On 9/11 we were in Vermont, but our son, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law were all in our apartment. Our phone connection stayed open for six hours and our next-door neighbors were finally able to drive north out of the city with their family and ours. For us, 9/11 was not a media event," the composer says.

The piece is scored for three string quartets; Kronos recorded all three parts for the album. WTC 9/11 also uses pre-recorded voices, the speakers' final vowels and consonants elongated in a stop-motion sound technique that Reich says is the "means of connecting one person to another-harmonically." Those voices and their texts belong to NORAD air traffic controllers, as they raised the alert that the airplanes were off course; FDNY workers on the scene; friends and former neighbors of the Reichs, recalling that day; and women who kept vigil, or Shmira, over the dead in a tent outside the Medical Examiner's office, reading Psalms or Biblical passages. The relationship between Steve Reich and Kronos Quartet spans more than 20 years. This is the third quartet the composer has written for Kronos; all three have been recorded by Nonesuch.

Mallet Quartet (2009), co-commissioned and performed by SÅ Percussion, is scored for two vibraphones and two five-octave marimbas. The New York Times said of a recent Carnegie Hall performance: "SÅ Percussion's energetic account...pointed up one of Mr. Reich's current modes of propulsion: a two-tiered approach in which the rhythmically repetitive backdrop that listeners hear as Minimalist (and as the music's distinctively Reichian signature) is offset by restless, melodically adventurous top lines. There were other contrasts here: the repeating figures, for marimbas, were dark and subdued, with a warm, wooden tone; the themes, played on vibraphones, were cool, bright and lively."

Dance Patterns (2002) is Reich's contribution to Thierry de Mey's film Counterphrases of Anne Terese de Keersmaeker's Choreography, for which several composers wrote short pieces. While the film was shown, the music was performed live by the Ictus Ensemble, which commissioned all the music. Scored for vibraphones, xylophones, and pianos, Dance Patterns features members of Steve Reich and Musicians on the Nonesuch recording.

Caetano Veloso, dubbed "one of the greatest songwriters of the century" (New York Times), is among the most influential and beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960s, Veloso has made more than 30 recordings to date and has developed a strong international following.

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in São Paulo. In his first compositions he drew on the bossa novas of João Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethânia, and a number of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicália. By experimenting with new sounds and words, adding electric guitars to their bands, and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musical revolutionary.

This short-lived movement, founded in 1968, ended abruptly when Caetano and Gil were sent into exile and lived in London. Now universally credited with redefining what is known as Brazilian music, it laid the groundwork for a renaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad. Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil in 1972 and found that Tropicália had remained intact and their audience had continued to grow.

Although Tropicália set the tone for Caetano's career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporating elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canão, baião, and rap-with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in a musical tradition rich in verse-Caetano's music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once an astute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in the Portuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and still undeniably Brazilian.

Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch release, Livro, an album which garnered widespread critical acclaim in the US and brought with it his first-ever US tour, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film Orfeu. In spring 2001, Nonesuch released Noites do Norte (Nights of the North), a meditation on themes of race, slavery, and Brazil's quest for a national identity. Later that year came Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta, a live recording made in 1997 in Rimini in honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. The following year brought another live album, a double disc recorded in Caetano's home state, called Live in Bahia, released in conjunction with the publication, by Knopf, of Caetano's long-awaited memoir, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.

In September 2003, Nonesuch released The Best of Caetano Veloso, a retrospective of Veloso's work from 1989 to 2001, including a live rendition of the haunting "Cucurrucucú Paloma," featured in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her. The following spring came A Foreign Sound, his first all-English set, paying tribute to 20th-century American pop composers, from Cole Porter to Kurt Cobain. And in January 2007, Veloso, backed by a young Brazilian trio, created a surprisingly brash rock sound for the album Cê, about which the Boston Globe notes, "The man's voice is as richly seductive and thoughtful as ever." His lyrics "offer intellectual and cultural queries ... suffused with yearning and ambiguous eroticism."
