SPORTS The Serpent’s Tale • 5 Super Bowl LIV By Ashley Fernandez

On Sunday, February 2, 2020, the 54th Super Bowl was held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This season was the NFL’s 100th, in which the champion for the 2019 season was crowned. The event was streamed on Fox TV and the Fox Sports app. The long-awaited game was a war of titans. The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs went toe to toe until the final instances of the game. The Chiefs beat the 49ers with a -fi nal score of 31 to 20, marking their first Super Bowl victory since Super Bowl IV. The first half of the game went back and forth between the two teams, with the game tied at 10 heading into halftime. However, in the third quar- ter, the 49ers began to pull away, giving them a 20-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, over the last 6:13 of the game, the Chiefs offense completed three touchdown drives to take the lead just before the two minute warning. The Chiefs then stopped the 49ers on defense, and a late rushing touchdown sealed the football victory. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.

In the playoffs, the 49ers earned a first-round bye as the NFC’s first seed. In the Divisional Round, they defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 27–10. Photo by CBS Sports Photo by CBS Sports The 49ers dominated this game: outperforming the Vikings in first-downs, rushing yards, and total yards. In the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers led by 27–0 at half time over the Green Bay Packers on their way to a 37–20 win.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs also had a first-round bye as the AFC’s sec- ond seed. In the Divisional Round, they fell 24–0 behind the Houston Texans, but rallied to take a 28–24 half time lead. They dominated the second half and ended with a 51–31 win.Their next opponent was the 6th-seeded Tennessee Titans, which they defeated as well. Kansas City rallied back from a 17–7 deficit in the second quarter by scoring four unanswered touchdowns to win the game 35–24.

The Chiefs were the designated home team for Super Bowl LIV, as the home team alternates between the two conferences annually. As the desig- nated home team, the Chiefs elected to wear their standard red home jerseys with white pants. The 49ers wore their standard white away jerseys with gold pants. This was the first time two teams with red as a primary uniform color met in the Super Bowl. 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, joined his father Mike Shanahan as the first father-son duo to lead their teams to a Super Bowl as head coaches. Many fans from Los Angeles and beyond mourned his death; and all news outlets were focused on his story. Bryant and his baby girl passed away way too soon. He was just about to enjoy his post-NBA life, while Gianna was following her father’s footsteps of a successful basketball career.

A private funeral was held on February 7th for Kobe and Gianna, and a memorial service happened subsequently on February 24th at the Staples Center to commemorate the lives of those in the crash. Later this year, Kobe is predicted to be a first ballot inductee into the Naismith Me- morial Basketball Hall of Fame. More specifically, he concentrates on bettering his abilities as a manga artist.

Our current bell schedule sees our school day beginning at 7:20 Estivaine’s love for drawing manga is derived from his love for anime and a desire to further his artistic range AM and ending at 2:20 PM. This has been the norm, so far, for the duration of knowledge from what is typically seen in western society. “I kind of wanted to step out of the norm and try something of our high school lives. Contrasting the original bell schedule are two new that not many people here are willing to go for,” he explained. Another reason for his gravitation towards manga is how the art form allows artists to express what he describes as a “comedic feel,” which just can’t be found in what others would proposed schedules titled “Proposed Model 1” and “Proposed Model 2,” consider more conventional artistic styles. This desire to express this “comedic feel” is reflected in Estivaine’s inspirations, which are slated for potential implementation in the 2020-2021 school year mainly the works of Keiichi Arawi, a manga artist who created such works as City and Nichijou: My Ordinary Life. if either gets approved. Apart from the dedication shown to improving his work as a manga artist, Estivaine leads the life of an average teenager. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, when Estivaine is not working on manga, he describes his hobbies as be- ing “too many” and admits that “when [he’s] not doing homework and school stuff [he] usually [draws], [plays games], [watches] anime, and [reads] manga.” He cited the Back to the Future trilogy as being his favorite piece of media, although he admits that he is a huge fan of Napoleon Dynamite, with his love for the movie stemming from its cult classic status and the different, creative ways it expresses itself. Estivaine also revealed his favorite manga after much deliberation, with them being, in no particular order, The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Currently a senior, Estivaine has reached the point where he has to decide what he wants to do for the future. When asked about plans after graduation, he considered going to the Ringling College for Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, but now plans to go to Miami Dade College for two years, get his associate degree, and see where life takes him from there. He doesn’t plan to leave Florida, as “he’s trying to save as much money as possible,” and feels like that’s the best option.

For upcoming artists or those who are stuck in a slump, Estivaine offers some words that could be of use: “Try to tell a story, because if you don’t have a story behind what you’re creating, then it’ll lack original feeling. Art is a really broad genre you can do what- ever you please, it just takes time. You have to dedicate a lot of time to improve yourself and do what you love. And yes, these claims should always be taken seriously; and many true victims of sexual assault have nothing but their own testimonies as evidence. But the issue here is timing. Heller released her own new album shortly after accusing Martinez, resulting in Heller gaining more popularity than ever before. Furthermore, Heller’s history of lying led many Twitter users to point out that Martinez was in New York on the day of the claimed assault, which Heller reported happened in Los Angeles. However, my purpose is not to incriminate or justify one person over another; instead it is to show that evidence is important, but those who participate in cancel culture rarely search for context.

The basis behind cancel culture is refusing to accept that human beings can change. Yes, past actions may undoubtedly be incorrect, but those who committed them may have learned from their mis- takes by the time these tweets are uncovered. Similarly, cancel culture advocates typically do not search for evidence before making their claims. Instead, they take a claim or an out-of-context quote and jump to conclusions, and this is enough to build an entire movement of hate.

Photo by GovTech But why is this important? The truth is, though it may not seem like it, cancel culture is incredibly dangerous.
