PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Jaco Three Views of His Secrets
26 bassplayer.com /january2016 Jaco Three Views of his secreTs By e.e. Bradman About hAlf An hour into the new documentary Jaco, there’s a scene that reflects a cru- cial aspect of the Jaco Pastorius legend. It’s the fall of 1975, and Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby has flown a virtually unknown Jaco from Ft. Lauderdale to New York to record his debut with jazz luminaries Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, Wayne Shorter, and Lenny White. The product of those sessions, the soulful, eclectic stunner simply titled Jaco Pastorius, would shake the bass world to its foundations, of course, but the album cover—with its bold lettering across a no-nonsense black & white portrait by Don Hunstein—might suggest that the unsmiling young maestro was overly serious about making a good first impression. That wasn’t true at all. “It was wild,” says Return To Forever drummer Lenny White of the sessions in October 1975. “Basically, we would play, do a take, and go outside and play basketball.” “We could have done it on bicycles with microphones, and he would have played it perfectly,” remembers producer Colomby, still impressed four decades later. Far from nervous, in fact, 23-year-old Jaco was natural, relaxed, and in his element. “I walked into the studio, and Jaco’s eyes were lit up because he had found home—this was the level he belonged on,” recalls trombonist/musical direc- tor Peter Graves. These quintessential Pastorius hallmarks—soul- ful virtuosity, athletic showmanship, and superhu- man technique, with confidence to burn—are central bassplayer.com / january2016 27 CS JACO JEFF YEAGER Robert Trujillo themes of Jaco.

This phenomenon questions the coexistence of different languages within local music practices. In this article, I argue that we cannot fully understand this issue without addressing the sacred dimension of language in popular music, which entails two aspects: 1) the transitory experience of an ideal that challenges intelligibility, and 2) the entanglement with social norms and institutions. Further to which, I compare Latin hegemony during the Middle Ages and the contemporary French popular music, where English and French coexist in a context marked by globalisation and ubiquitous digital technologies.

There’s a good reason for that; because, like you, we’ve always known that there is far more to the Motherland than some bloke arsing about in Sherwood Forest, and we’d sooner give the less bigged-up avenues of Nottingham culture a shine. There are many reasons why we decided to cave in and roll out a massive tribute to the Hooded Man this ish. For one, it’s because of the resurgence of pride in our mythical lore. As part of the midem tradeshow (26-29 January 2013) and organised by Reed MIDEM, the midem festival will take place every night from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 January on the Palais des Festivals’ esplanade, in Cannes, France. Following the success of its inaugural edition and sponsored by Opel ADAM, the 2013 programme of the midem festival will present ten concerts over three nights at the heart of the world’s largest music market. Performed inside a specially built Magic Mirrors venue and in front of an audience of both international music professionals and general music fans, each concert programme will be preceded by a happy hour networking event with DJ sets between 6.30pm and 8.00pm. Registered midem participants will have access to every concert and invitations are available for the general public through the City of Cannes, midem’s media partners (Les Inrockuptibles, Infoconcert...) and on midemfestival.com. The midem festival 2013 talent line-up includes, on Saturday 26 January, the world-renowned British band Madness, who recently performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert and at the Olympic Games closing ceremony and who’s new album Oui Oui, Si Si, Ja Ja, Da Da was just released this week through Cooking Vinyl/Atmosphériques.
