Worshipping God + Growing His Church + Loving His World HEDDIW / TODAY - 13th Sunday after Pentecost Jeremiah 23:23-29 Psalm 82 Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 Luke 12:49-56

COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than either we desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Hollalluog a thragwyddol Dduw, rwyt bob amser yn barotach i wrando nag ydym ni i weddïo ac yn arfer rhoi mwy nag a ddeisyfwn na’i haeddu: tywallt arnom amlder dy drugaredd, gan faddau inni’r pethau y mae ein cydwybod yn eu hofni a rhoi inni’r pethau daionus hynny nad ydym yn deilwng i ofyn amdanynt, ond trwy haeddiannau a chyfryngdod Iesu Grist ein Harglwydd, sy’n fyw ac yn teyrnasu gyda thi, yn undod yr Ysbryd Glân, yn un Duw, yn awr ac am byth. Amen.

SERVICE TO CELEBRATE THE 125th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SAILORS’ INSTITUTE ST DAVID’s CHURCH BARMOUTH Sun 21st Aug 6pm with HARLECH SILVER BAND. The Sailors' Institute is unique - a rare survivor of a type of establishment that was once com- mon in coastal communities throughout the British Isles in the late 19th century. This was a period when the sea-going trades around the British coasts were changing rapidly. The advancement of the railway into rural areas undermined the once lively coastal trade. However, seafarers from the remotest coastal areas did not forsake the sea but instead be- gan to take up berths on deep sea ships sailing from the larger ports such as London, Hull, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool and Cardiff. The majority of their fami- lies remained in their native communities where, in the past they had been able to observe the seaborne movements of their men folk on local voyages. In order that they could contin- ue to trace the new voyages, many seamen's institutes came into existence, not just as a meeting place but also where the Lloyds List and Shipping Gazette were available for consul- tation. From these, the families could trace the lengthy voyages which could last up to two years. Built in 1896 by Canon Edward Hughes to provide a ‘Christian haven’, the Sailors’ Insti- tute is still a reading and rest room for local and visiting sailors, and features a remarkably preserved Victorian reading room which can still be enjoyed by visitors who venture into this small building. It was renovated in 1984 and subsequently given back its corrugated cladding of iron. The Reading Room is open daily to all members of the public free of charge, (closed Sundays November to April). Newspapers and magazines are available for reading and there are many photographs and sea charts depicting Barmouth’s maritime history.
