When Blessed Catherine Kasper began serving the poor and underserved people in the village of Dernbach, Germany, surely she had no idea that her legacy of service would endure for more than 100 years, and spread across the ocean into the far corners of the world. However, that's exactly what happened through the many ministries of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. In her time, Blessed Catherine Kasper would often visit people in her village, listening attentively to their needs, and responding courageously to make a better life for those less fortunate. Thus, the concept of community benefit—what your ministry does to serve the community in response to the needs expressed by the community you serve—may have its roots—particularly for PHJC ministries—in the small village of Dernbach.

What constitutes “community benefit” is a subject of much discussion among non-profit organizations nationwide. However, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ define services that have quantifiable community benefit as follows:

• Demonstrates that the ministry's work exemplifies the PHJC axiom of “attentive listening and courageous response”

• Programs that address an identified community need

• Includes low-income and underserved persons

• Has a relationship to the organization's mission

• Meets a need that otherwise would have to be met by the government or another non-profit organization

You have helped Sojourner Truth House and Nazareth Home accomplish many heroic feats during 2008, including donating more than 100,000 pounds of food to homeless and at-risk women and children; helping to care for medically compromised babies; donating to the construction of an All-Seasons room to enhance therapy sessions for the babies; providing over 34,000 articles of clothing, assisting clients with housing ... and the list goes on! Page 5 Put Yourself on the Line in 2009 by Sister Peg Spindler, CSA

I wanted to write “Everything will be fine in 2009” but we all know that will not be the case for far too many of us. Numbers here at Sojourner Truth House for the food pantry and clothes closet are increasing—in fact, our average served per month in 2008 was over 1,000! Many are new clients who have just lost their jobs.

Right now, we are able to serve them. But I know this economy will eventually begin to affect our smaller donors who are the backbone of our fundraising and even the bigger foundations who have suffered huge losses in the Wall Street maelstrom. I pray we realize that we are all in this together, one way or another.

So, while Washington and Indiana work on the larger picture, what can each of us do to help each other get through “this”? While it may seem overwhelming to hold our government and corporations accountable, we must do that—even as we pinch every penny ourselves. Many survive by bartering with each other for essential goods and services—we see that here at STH amongst our clients.

But our clients can't barter with WalMart for diapers or Ultra for food. They can't barter with NIPSCO to pay for their heat or with landlords to pay the rent. They can't negotiate services from the health care system. Nor can we here at STH who try to provide some assistance in those areas to our clients.

So, we still very much need all of you and anyone else you know. Looking at the Honor Roll of Donors in this issue, we gratefully acknowledge our reliance on so many foundations, groups, churches, schools, sororities, fraternities and individuals. Whether these ministerial partnerships are financial, in-kind, volunteering or all of those, STH cannot carry out its mission without them. That said, it's time for all of us to put our lives on the line in 2009. Some of us will have to tighten our belts and pinch those pennies harder just to survive. Others of us can tighten our belts and pinch those pennies harder to help the growing numbers of those in real need. The old saying “Live more simply so that others may simply live” comes to mind. How very true in these difficult times. Those of us who can choose to tighten our belts, let's do so for those who don't even have belts to tighten. Let's be like the courageous and unselfish crew of the plane which landed in the Hudson River—making sure that all get through these times. Let's all put our lives on the line in 2009—for each other. We shall certainly be the better for it. Grace and courage to us all!
