Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012. -

Enrico Caruso (1873-1921)
ENRICO CARUSO (1873-1921) Birth Name: Enrico Caruso Place of Birth: Naples, Italy Career Highlights: Enrico Caruso was widely considered the greatest international opera star of his day. He was not American – Caruso was born and died in Naples, Italy – but he spent many years living in New York as a leading star at the Metropolitan Opera, and was the United States’ first recording superstar, issuing almost 300 recordings with the Victor Talking Machine Company (later RCA). While much of his recording focused on operatic works, Caruso recorded many popular songs, including the Neapolitan (southern Italian) song “O Sole Mio,” in the language of his native Naples. (In 1960, Elvis Presley had a No. 1 hit with the song “It’s Now or Never,” sung to same tune as “O Sole Mio.”) In 1918, Caruso recorded the patriotic American World War I song “Over There.” Recording: “O Sole Mio” (traditional Italian song), 1916 Recording: “Over There” (patriotic World War I song), 1918 Questions to consider: What cities are the newspapers below from? Annie Oakley Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter born in Darke County, Ohio, as Phoebe Ann Mosey. When she was five, her father died, and Annie learned to trap, shoot and hunt by age eight to help support her family. In 1875 (though some sources say it was in 1881), Annie met her future husband, Frank E. Butler, at the Baughman & Butler shooting act in Cincinnati, while beating him in a shooting contest. They were married a year later, and in 1885, they joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West where she was given the nickname “Little Sure Shot.” Considered America’s first female star, Oakley traveled all over the United States and Europe showing off her skills. Oakley set shooting records into her sixties, and also did philanthropic work for women’s rights and other causes. In 1925, she died in Greenville, Ohio. Important Dates . August 13, 1860: Annie Oakley is born Phoebe Ann Mosey in Darke County, Ohio. November 1875: Oakley defeats Frank E. Butler in a shooting contest. The pair marries a year later. 1885: Oakley and Butler join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. 1889: Oakley travels to France to perform in the Paris Exposition. 1901: Oakley is injured in a train accident but recovers and returns to show business. 1912-1917: Oakley and Butler retire temporarily and reside in Cambridge, Maryland. 1917: Oakley and Butler move to North Carolina and return to public life. 1922: Oakley and Butler are injured in a car accident, but Oakley performs again a year or so later. -

Feature image by Mike Penello. In the early 20th century, segregation was a fact of life for African Americans in the South. It became a matter of law in 1926. In 1919, a group of African Americans from Norfolk and Portsmouth met to develop a cultural/business center in Norfolk where the black community “could be treated with dignity and respect.” The “Twin Cities Amusement Corporation” envisioned something like a modern-day town center. The businessmen obtained funding from black owned financial institutions in Hampton Roads. Twin Cities designed and built a movie theater/ retail/ office complex at the corner of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk. Photo courtesy of the family of Harvey Johnson The businessmen chose 25-year-old architect Harvey Johnson to design a 600-seat “state of the art” theater with balconies and an orchestra pit. The Attucks Theatre is the only surviving theater in the United States that was designed, financed and built by African Americans. The Attucks was named after Crispus Attucks, a stevedore of African and Native American descent. He was the first patriot killed in the Revolutionary War at the Boston Massacre of 1770. 1 Rebel In A Dress: How Belva Lockwood Made The Case For Women’s Rights Grace McMahan Junior Division Historical Paper Paper Length: 2500 2 Introduction On a chilly day in early March of 1879, Ms. Belva Ann Lockwood entered the United States Supreme Court. She entered not as a spectator or a defendant, but to be sworn in as the first female lawyer with the ability to argue in front of the highest court in the country. Although she was the first, Lockwood was not the last woman to argue in the halls of the court. She shattered the glass ceiling for women in law and paved the way for the others behind her. She daringly ran for president before women could even vote. Her inability to be discouraged and her fierce belief in her ideas showed others that women could be impactful figures. Belva Lockwood was the first woman to argue in front of the U.S. Supreme Court and the first female presidential candidate. Her work in law helped break barriers in terms of female integration into U.S. law and government, while simultaneously challenging gender inequalities. Background Born on October 24, 1830, in Royalton, New York, Belva Ann Bennett married at age eighteen. Her husband, Uriah, tragically died leaving Lockwood behind to raise their daughter, Lura.1 After Lockwood started a job teaching, she discovered that she was paid half the amount of men with her same job.
