The statue of the Smurfs at Brussels Airport is inspired by album 14, “The Aerosmurf”, which was published in 1990 and in which the Smurfs appropriately fly a red aeroplane. That same aeroplane formed the basis for the creative minds to conjure up an airport scene. Papa Smurf is the marshaller who indicates where and how the aeroplane should park. Smurfette and Baby Smurf oversee things. “I am very pleased to welcome the Smurfs to Brussels Airport. For decades they have been an internationally famous icon of our country and are, just like the Tintin rocket in Connector, the perfect representatives of Belgian creativity and our rich comic book culture.
