Union Springs High School | 239 Cayuga Street | (315) 889-4110 | www.unionspringscsd.org UNION SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS director’s note

In these troubled times, the perfect thing to do is step back for a second and watch a silly musical while belting out a good 80’s power rock ballad. As excited as the kids are to perform this year, I’ve found their parents are even more thrilled to dress their kids like their teenage selves and hear the songs they grew up with. While the musical is original, the songs are hits everyone will know. Even the students who weren’t born in the 80’s can recognize “I Wanna Rock” as being ‘that song from SpongeBob’. Or as one of my students put it hearing the song list, “Oh, this is like going on the best road trip with your dad.” Indeed.

In addition, I’d like to acknowledge the over-the- top work ethic of our youngest stage manager ever and the cast members who swooped in out of nowhere to replace lost roles without missing a beat. The talent and support in this district is a miracle, and I continue to be grateful each day.

Now get your air guitar and karaoke skills ready, and enjoy our production of Rock of Ages 101: High School Edition.

What a road trip this production has been. Sincerely, Organizing this wild show has been like wrangling a hurricane. We never could have done Nicholas Bessette it without the amazing talent and dedication of Director cast, production team, high school staff, and an army of loyal parents.

Jacob Jirinec (Franz Klineman) is thrilled to be playing Franz in this year’s musical. He was in “Peter Pan” as the Father and Cecco , and in “Grease” as Sonny. This is also his third year in theater class. Jacob would like to give a big thank you to Mr.Bessette for helping him come out of his shell and making him into the person he is today.

Ayzha Huff (Justice Charlier) is new to Union Springs High School, moving here at the beginning of the school year from Charleston, SC. She was in a theater program at her old school and worked a lot with the tech crew. She also participated in plays in her middle and elementary years and has been singing since she was a baby. She plans to pursue a career in music and acting in her near future. Ayzha would like to thank all of her friends at Union Springs for welcoming her into the school with open arms. She could not have felt more comfortable starting a new school in a completely different state. She would also like to thank Mr. Bessette for showing her how to be a confident actress and helping her find her “inner character.” She says, “Mr. Bessette, you have really taught me how to be confident as an actress. You are so dedicated to the students and you don’t treat it as just a job. You have such a passion and it’s such an inspiration to me. I will take everything you’ve taught me wherever I go with my career.” She is very excited about this musical and can’t wait to start the show!

Leah DeGraw (Waitress #1) is very happy to be part of the Union Springs Central School District’s production of “Rock of Ages.” She is proud to say that she has consecutively been in every show since the fifth grade! Those shows include, “Cinderella,” “Willy Wonka Jr.,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “Into the Woods,” “Cats,” “Peter Pan,” and “Grease.” She has participated in many All-County and Area All-State performances. She has played clarinet since the fourth grade and plans to continue studying and learning about the instrument. Along with the clarinet, Leah plays bass guitar, violin, saxophone, and piano. Leah plans to study Music Education in the fall at Roberts Wesleyan College. She would like to thank her family and all her teachers, including Mr. Bessette for supporting her.

Jared Wilmot (Sherrie’s Father/Ja’Keith Gill) plans on earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy after he graduates high school. He would like to go to school through the N.R.O.T.C. scholarship and plans on making the military his career. He has been participating in Indoor and Outdoor Track since his Sophomore year and has participated in Cross Country since his Junior year. His previous acting experience includes being in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” as Mr. Johnson/Policeman in seventh grade. In ninth grade, he had the part of Allonzo in the musical “Cats.” Finally, he would like to thank his family and friends that pushed him into trying new and exciting things.

Bailey Burr (Constance Sack/Sleazy Record Producer) is a talented artist on paper and on stage. She has enjoyed working in multiple productions including, “High School Musical Jr.,” “Peter Pan,” “Mary Poppins,” and numerous talent shows. “Rock of Ages” is an exciting final show to complete her high school musical career. As the characters of Constance Sack and Sleazy Record Producer, Bailey has had a blast preparing for this production! She would like to thank her close friends, family, and mentors that have followed her throughout high school including, Brian Franco, Nick Bessette, Mitchell Fabian, and Jason Charles.

Riley Evener (Producer) is thrilled to be in his first ever musical playing the part of the Producer. He has also had a lot of fun in his first year of Theater class. He would like to thank his family and everyone who has supported him over the years.

Laura Woodman (Sleazier Record Producer) is ecstatic to continue her high school experience with her last show, “Rock of Ages.” She has had a wide background in theater, including dance classes, theater class, and the talent show. Laura also participated in other musicals such as “Peter Pan” and “Grease,” and is excited to close out her last year of high school with “Rock of Ages,” rocking out with the audience.

Union Springs High School | 239 Cayuga Street | (315) 889-4110 | www.unionspringscsd.org UNION SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS Seniors ~ Class of 2017

Emily Irving (Venus Girl #1) is very happy to be involved in her third high school musical production this year, following “Peter Pan” and “Grease.” She has also been involved in Theater class and the Talent Show. Emily would like to thank her very supportive family and friends, and some of the most influential teachers, including Mr. Fabian, Mr. Zdanowski, Mr. Charles, and last but not least, Mr. Bessette.

Elysia Koffler (Chorus) has loved being a part of “Rock of Ages.” She has been a part of the music department since fourth grade. Elysia was in choralairs and started playing the French horn in elementary school, keeping up with it all throughout her elementary, middle, and high school career. Elysia has participated in several musicals including, “The Music Man Jr.,” “Cinderella,” “Willy Wonka Jr.,” “How to Succeed in Business,” “Cats,” “Peter Pan,” “Grease,” and of course, “Rock of Ages”! Being in chorus, band, and musicals has made Elysia who she is today. Elysia will never forget the memories and friends she has made throughout the years. The musicals create an everlasting family.

Maria Montalvo (Chorus) had decided to do the play last year for the first time since she had moved here. She had participated in shows before, but she was a shy girl who decided to come out of her safe bubble and try something new and old. Maria has found the courage to do the play with the support of her friends who had been in shows before. “Grease” was such a great experience, and a great way to get to know more students and make new friends. She wishes she had tried out for musicals years prior because it was so much fun to be a part of and help with costumes and props. This year, she is happy to say that she is part of “Rock of Ages.”

Congratulations, Seniors! Good luck with your future endeavors.
