Brussels Airport, 22 June 2017 the Smurfs Wish Passengers at Brussels Airport a Nice Journey! Since This Afternoon, Papa Smurf Brussels Airport, 22 June 2017 The Smurfs wish passengers at Brussels Airport a nice journey! Since this afternoon, Papa Smurf, Smurfette and Baby Smurf have arrived at Brussels Airport to wave off the passengers who leave from Gates B. In the relaxation and shopping area leading to Pier B, a statue has been unveiled of the blue Belgian comic book heroes, the final touch to a thorough renovation of this area where the Belgian tastes, identity and icons immerse passengers for one last time in the culture of our country. The statue of the Smurfs at Brussels Airport is inspired by album 14, “The Aerosmurf”, which was published in 1990 and in which the Smurfs appropriately fly a red aeroplane. That same aeroplane formed the basis for the creative minds to conjure up an airport scene. Papa Smurf is the marshaller who indicates where and how the aeroplane should park. Smurfette and Baby Smurf oversee things. “I am very pleased to welcome the Smurfs to Brussels Airport. For decades they have been an internationally famous icon of our country and are, just like the Tintin rocket in Connector, the perfect representatives of Belgian creativity and our rich comic book culture. We have therefore given the Smurfs a place of honour in the completely renovated area where passengers can enjoy the Belgian culture and cuisine”, says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport Company. The Smurfs, the small blue comic book heroes created by Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford), first saw the light of day in 1958. In their nearly 60-year existence they succeeded in acquiring world fame. The Smurfs embody universal values including solidarity, mutual help, tolerance and optimism which makes them popular with people of all ages, gender or cultural background. More than 50 million comic books have been sold worldwide and their films dating from 2011, 2013 and 2017 were huge box-office successes. “We are proud that our Smurfs, undoubtedly the best known Belgian brand abroad, are now here at Brussels Airport in the completely renovated Gallery of Light! For nearly 60 years, the Smurfs have brought happiness to all, and are pleased to greet both young and old as they leave on their journey! The collaboration with Brussels Airport for this project was highly fruitful and cooperative”, says Véronique Culliford, founding chairperson of IMPS and daughter of Peyo. The 12 shops and 2 restaurants were completely renovated with attention for the Belgian identity and regional products. The renovation of this area is the crowning touch of the major building and renovation project following the opening of Connector. Unlike before, the relaxation and shopping area is now located beyond security screening and passport control, so that passengers can relax here just a few steps from the gates, and comfortably stroll around, enjoy the Belgian cuisine, or wait for the departure of their flights. SMURF VILLAGE - DAY (SHORTLY AFTER SMURFS 2 ENDS) A big banner reads “Welcome Vexy and Hackus!” Like an Amish barn raising, the entire village of Smurfs is busy building TWO NEW MUSHROOMS for the new arrivals. NARRATOR (O.S.) For years and years it was just Papa and his 99 Smurfs. Then came Smurfette to make it an even 100. And now, two new Smurfs, rescued from the evil clutches of Gargamel, have joined the fold. The CAMERA finds NARRATOR SMURF walking through the village. NARRATOR The whole village has gathered to build them homes of their own - except me of course - because I’m the “vocal talent”. He passes by the construction site of Vexy’s new mushroom. VEXY is there with BRAINY - who stands underneath the overhang holding BLUEPRINTS. VEXY I get that it’s supposed to look like a mushroom, Brainy - but isn’t that too much overhang? BRAINYWeinstock Nonsense. According to my calculations, there’s more than enough structural buttressing here to support... WHAM! - the overhang drops, CRASHING on Brainy - covering him in a pile Marcof rubble. VEXY (calling into rubble) I’m sorry. I can’t hear you from under all that “buttressing”. OVER BY HACKUS’ MUSHROOM - HANDY is discussing design with Hackus. HANDY So what’re you thinkin’, Hackus? Shitake style? Or more of a traditional Portobello? scherick & ronn 2. Hackus has no idea. • The Smurfs Were Communists! by Dave Morgan Okay, I Know It
The Smurfs Were Communists! By Dave Morgan Okay, I know it sounds crazy. I didn't believe it myself at first. Then I started thinking about it, and it starts getting scary. First of all, you must put aside all the media-programmed, propaganda-driven thoughts or irrational fears you might already have about communists. Forget all that big bad Russian stuff that the 80's taught us, that doesn't exist anymore. Think of communism as just a way of life, a social order, an economic standpoint, a lifestyle choice. Take all the visions of sickles and hammers and tanks out of your head for awhile, and then you will be able to see it clearly. First of all, the Smurfs shared everything. The food in the Smurf village was stored away in those mushrooms the minute it was harvested and then equally distributed to all the Smurfs throughout the year. No one "farmer Smurf" sold his crop to a "consumer Smurf," or saw his labor exploited by another. It was understood that the crop was for the entire Smurf population, not for the sale or profit of one Smurf alone. Then there were those jobs each Smurf held. There was Handy Smurf, and Painter Smurf, and Brainy Smurf, etc... Each Smurf had his own specific job and was not allowed to try his hand at any other Smurf's assigned task. There actually was an episode where each Smurf tried to do another one's job, and failed. The moral of the story was apparently "Stick to what you do Best" or to put it another way, stick to what the society has chosen for you, or maybe just "You'll get what you get and like it!" Handy Smurf was always building.

THE PASSAGE OF THE COMIC BOOK TO THE ANIMATED FILM: THE CASE OF THE SMURFS Frances Novier Baldwin, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2011 APPROVED: Marie-Christine Koop, Major Professor and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Christophe Chaguinian, Committee Member Lawrence Williams, Committee Member James D. Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Baldwin, Frances Novier. The Passage of the Comic Book to the Animated Film: The Case of the Smurfs. Master of Arts (French), August 2011, 56 pp., bibliography, 31 titles. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of history and culture on the passage of the comic book to the animated film. Although the comic book has both historical and cultural components, the latter often undergoes a cultural shift in the animation process. Using the Smurfs as a case study, this investigation first reviews existing literature pertaining to the comic book as an art form, the influence of history and culture on Smurf story plots, and the translation of the comic book into a moving picture. This study then utilizes authentic documents and interviews to analyze the perceptions of success and failure in the transformation of the Smurf comic book into animation: concluding that original meaning is often altered in the translation to meet the criteria of cultural relevance for the new audiences. Copyright 2011 By Frances Novier Baldwin ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am particularly grateful to Dr. Marie-Christine Koop for suggesting the topic for my thesis.
