There was a lot of genuinely intriguing stuff, for instance info on the wave of merchandise that swept through North America during the height of eighties capitalism, some stuff about Paul Winchell voice of evil The World of Smurfs Gargamel helping to invent the first artificial heart and doing voices for Disney alongside his work on The Smurfs TV series, and the conspiracy theory that Smurfs are socialists and that the comics were made as a political ploy. While I was expecting The World of Smurfs to be very cheesy, it was actually a lot of fun and it came with tons of additional stuff such as plastic animation sheets and information about the live-action film. May 14, Milky Mixer rated it it was amazing. I looked at this book a couple of years ago and thought it would be great to add to my library. Of course, the next time I was at the bookstore it was gone and it kind of went off my radar for awhile. I came across a copy at a different store this weekend and decided not to miss out again! So happy I bought it, as I think I'll enjoy looking through it again and again. I have a few small quips - would have loved an expanded chapter about the Smurfs merchandise and their heyday in the US, perhaps more fan stories and photos showing how the Smurfs sprang into our lives and captured our hearts. Who else had the Smurfs bedsheets, breakfast cereal, tv tray, Trapper The World of Smurfs, Christmas collectors plates? Also might The World of Smurfs been fun to touch on some of the knockoffs the Smurfs inspired Snorks! The book closes out with the first live action Smurfs movie. I didn't especially care for the film, but its inclusion is a valid bookend to the legacy of the Smurfs. But in terms of the story of the Smurfs, it's all here, accompanied by gorgeous artwork and lots of fun extras like stickers and a map of Smurf Village. Why was the name Peyo on everything Smurfy? Where did the name "Smurfs" come from? Who were the Smurflings? Why were Johan and Peewit part of the Smurfs' world? You'll get the full, true blue backstory and spend hours pouring over the The World of Smurfs glossy pages! Mar 30, Christina rated it really liked it Shelves: arthistorymovies-tvs-childhood-nostalgia. I may have too many books, because I forgot I had this until I The World of Smurfs some s smurf books, and came across it in my library. By about the midpoint, I felt my bucket of interest in all things Smurf was full, and yet I smurfed on to finish and am glad I did. I was familiar with the smurfs I may have too many books, because I forgot I had this until I read some s smurf books, and came across it in my library. I was familiar with the smurfs as a Saturday morning and weekday after school cartoon, and even as a kid I knew that it was a European import. But this book filled in some of the history, including the origin of the Smurfs. Creator Peyo was a Belgian artist names Pierre Culliford, whose cousin called him Peyo in an attempt to pronounce Pierrot, a French nickname for Pierre. Culliford was not a good student, but did like to doodle in the margins. The studio was unable to produce news reels due to the Nazi control over their news, and so had begun producing animated fairytales. But when the war and the occupation ended, the studio was quickly eclipsed by Disney and Warner Brothers, and went bankrupt. The World of Smurfs went on to marry and work as an artist, convincing his wife Nine to become his colorist. He developed a comic following a The World of Smurfs squire Johan who eventually gained a popular blonde page as a sidekick. On one of their adventures, they found a magic flute and had to seek out its maker. Culliford felt pink was too close to skin tone. The little blue creatures proved so popular, they were given their own stories, starting with a page postcard-size comic in Spirou magazine called Les The World of Smurfs Noirs in The American Saturday morning cartoon aired from September to Decemberand consisted of episodes and short stories, plus 7 holiday specials. The animators resorted to looking in the phone book for ideas for new smurf professions, created new characters like Baby Smurf and the Smurflings, and even started time travelin plots. Peyo had approval of everything, and used it. In The World of Smurfs original comic, smurfs ate salsepareille, a mystical plant inspired by The World of Smurfs American native plant sarsaparilla, which seemed exotic to Peyo. However, as the plant The World of Smurfs familiar to The World of Smurfs as the key ingredient in root beer, the animated cartoon replaced it with Smurberries. Made by smurfs so happily As with many of the characters created by the TV show team, the Smurfberries began appearing in the comics as well. As a book, I thought this was well done. The history is full of references to people and publications that were The World of Smurfs, making The World of Smurfs not terribly engaging for a casual The World of Smurfs reader like myself. But as the book progresses to the cartoon and figures, it became a more nostalgic read. The book concludes with a section on the movie, which is no doubt the reason this book was published, so it could ride the coattails of the movie promotion. I was unimpressed by most of the movies—taking the Smurfs out of their world and putting them in ours made them lose a lot of the charm that made them appealing. The one movie I did like was the most recent Smurfs: The Lost Village as it was set in their world, and thus seemed more true to the original. Dec The World of Smurfs, Becky rated it really liked it Shelves: own-a-copyfavourites. Simply amazing book!. Only for the devoted fan of the Smurfs! Really interesting and informative. I just wish there was more pull out reproduced merchandise only about 10 in the whole book? I've been a long time Smurfs fan, so this book got me excited when it arrived in the mail. I did The World of Smurfs enjoy the Smurfs movie section, as it completely repulses me that film That's unrelated, just ruined my experience a bit with the damage. I recommend it to fans of the cartoon series Shelves: own. I loved this book because I think it did a good job at explaining The Smurfs and Peyo's past. The ability to pull things out of the book, the drawing on what the original Smurfs were going to look like or the original map of Smurfs Village were amazing things to see. If you have any interest at all in the Smurfs, or Peyo I would read this book. The Smurfs Were Communists! By Dave Morgan Okay, I know it sounds crazy. I didn't believe it myself at first. Then I started thinking about it, and it starts getting scary. First of all, you must put aside all the media-programmed, propaganda-driven thoughts or irrational fears you might already have about communists. Forget all that big bad Russian stuff that the 80's taught us, that doesn't exist anymore. Think of communism as just a way of life, a social order, an economic standpoint, a lifestyle choice. Take all the visions of sickles and hammers and tanks out of your head for awhile, and then you will be able to see it clearly. First of all, the Smurfs shared everything. The food in the Smurf village was stored away in those mushrooms the minute it was harvested and then equally distributed to all the Smurfs throughout the year. No one "farmer Smurf" sold his crop to a "consumer Smurf," or saw his labor exploited by another. It was understood that the crop was for the entire Smurf population, not for the sale or profit of one Smurf alone. Then there were those jobs each Smurf held. There was Handy Smurf, and Painter Smurf, and Brainy Smurf, etc... Each Smurf had his own specific job and was not allowed to try his hand at any other Smurf's assigned task. There actually was an episode where each Smurf tried to do another one's job, and failed. The moral of the story was apparently "Stick to what you do Best" or to put it another way, stick to what the society has chosen for you, or maybe just "You'll get what you get and like it!" Handy Smurf was always building.

Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Baldwin, Frances Novier. The Passage of the Comic Book to the Animated Film: The Case of the Smurfs. Master of Arts (French), August 2011, 56 pp., bibliography, 31 titles. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of history and culture on the passage of the comic book to the animated film. Although the comic book has both historical and cultural components, the latter often undergoes a cultural shift in the animation process. Using the Smurfs as a case study, this investigation first reviews existing literature pertaining to the comic book as an art form, the influence of history and culture on Smurf story plots, and the translation of the comic book into a moving picture. This study then utilizes authentic documents and interviews to analyze the perceptions of success and failure in the transformation of the Smurf comic book into animation: concluding that original meaning is often altered in the translation to meet the criteria of cultural relevance for the new audiences. Copyright 2011 By Frances Novier Baldwin ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am particularly grateful to Dr. Marie-Christine Koop for suggesting the topic for my thesis.
