    Over hoogspanningslijnen, kinderleukemie en kwakzalvers in epidemiologie en politiek Bart van Wees, Luc Bonneux en Ira Helsloot Hieronder vindt u drie artikelen over de ver- meende gevaren van hoogspanningslijnen in een woonwijk, waarbij allereerst wordt inge- gaan op de vraag waar de risicoperceptie op berust. Van Wees schetst de beperkte waarde van statistische significantie bij een afwezig biologisch verklaringsmodel, Bonneux (zie ook NTtdK 2, 2012:15-20) wijst eveneens op de beperkte waarde van de hoog in aanzien staande meta-analyses en op de belangen die sommigen erbij hebben de onzekerheid Nikola Tesla te laten voortduren, en Helsloot tenslotte beschrijft de politieke besluitvorming rond de voorgenomen maatregelen, die in geen verhouding staan tot de (waarschijnlijk non- existente) gezondheidsrisico’s. Hoogspanningslijnen en len verhaald worden op de elektriciteitsgebrui- kinderleukemie, dwaalwe- ker en op de belastingbetaler. Hoenders Amsterdam, 27-12-2013 Hooggeleerde heer, Het bestuur van de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij ontving onlangs van één van de promotoren het proefschrift van de heer Hoenders met de vraag of één van de bestuursleden bereid was bij de openbare verdediging te opponeren. Het proefschrift is bestudeerd door de bestuursleden waarna zij besloten niet te opponeren, omdat zij van mening zijn dat de heer Hoenders op grond van dit manuscript niet tot de openbare verdediging van het proefschrift had mogen worden toegelaten. Vier bestuursleden zijn emeritus hoogleraren die de volgende leeropdrachten hadden: psychiatrie, neurologie, psychologie en farmacochemie. Wij stellen u voor de openbare verdediging uit te stellen en het proefschrift nogmaals te laten beoordelen. Voorafgaande aan de verdediging is een symposium gepland met de twee buitenlandse leden van de beoordelingscommissie als spreker. Dit symposium kan gewoon doorgang vinden, waardoor geen onkosten door reis en verblijfkosten van deze opponenten ontstaan. Voor herbeoordeling van het proefschrift hebben wij de volgende twee argumenten: het proefschrift voldoet niet aan de eisen die door een universitair medisch centrum in Nederland tegenwoordig aan een proefschrift mogen worden gesteld en de beoordelingscommissie had een niet juiste samenstelling. Tegenwoordig wordt bij medische proefschriften geëist dat tenminste vier hoofdstukken gepubliceerd werden of worden door peer reviewed erkende internationale medische tijdschriften. In dit proefschrift komt slechts één artikel voor in een voor medici bekend tijdschrift. Het betreft een kort case-report (hoofdstuk 6) wat meestal niet als volwaardig meetelt bij de beoordeling van een proefschrift.

Wie dat water dronk zou gek worden. De volgende ochtend had de hele bevolking ervan gedronken en iedereen werd gek, behalve de koning die voor zichzelf en zijn familie een eigen bron had waar de tovenaar niet bij kon. Bezorgd probeerde de koning de bevolking onder controle te krijgen, hij vaardigde een hele serie decreten uit over veiligheid en gezondheid; maar politie en inspectie hadden vergiftigd water gedronken en vonden de Koninklijke besluiten absurd. Ze besloten ze volledig te negeren. Toen de inwoners van dat koninkrijk hoorden van de decreten, concludeerden ze dat hun heerser gek geworden was en nonsens schreef. Joelend trokken ze op naar het kasteel en eisten dat hij af zou treden . Wanhopig verklaarde de koning zich bereid af te treden, maar de koningin hield hem tegen en zei:”We gaan naar hun bron en drinken hun water. Dan worden wij hetzelfde als zij”. En zo gebeurde het: koning en koningin dronken het water van de waanzin en begonnen onmiddellijk nonsens uit te kramen. Hun onderdanen kregen meteen spijt: de koning toonde nu zoveel wijsheid, waarom hem niet verder laten regeren? Het land leefde vredig voort, ofschoon de inwoners zich heel anders gedroegen dan hun buren. Despite the groWing popularity and controversies around superfoods, hardly any research has been done on this subject. Therefore, this study aimed to find out hoW superfoods are framed by both young Dutch adults and professional nutrition experts and by Which factors and mechanisms these framings are influenced. Data triangulation Was applied in three different contexts. Young Dutch adults’ frames, motivations and sources of information With regard to superfoods Were investigated in tWo focus groups and in a study of the commentary sections of food blogs. Professional nutrition experts’ frames of superfoods Were examined in ‘het grote superfood debat’, a debate about superfoods in the context of Multiple Sclerosis. The results shoW that participants in the focus groups often found themselves in an identity dilemma as they Were both intrigued by superfoods as Well as embarrassed to admit to these interests. In order to solve this ambivalence, they applied identity and characterization frames.
