It was commented that the Foundation Committee played a key role in promoting the identity of Anglicanism within the University and that the role of the Foundation Committee is greatly significant to the University.

The Vice-Chancellor commented that the University’s identity as a values-led institution will become increasingly important as the demographic downturn takes effect. To grasp this opportunity, at the heart of the University’s Strategic Plan will be the quality of mercy, making the University’s Strategic Plan very different to that of any other university. The concept of mercy will link together the idea of radical hospitality and religion within the community. This concept will be linked to programmes, including, staff and student volunteering programmes. A Centre for Theology in Public Life will be developed. It is increasingly likely that students will be expecting to develop their faith whilst studying at university. The concept of radical hospitality will enable students to develop their faith. Radical hospitality will also

Foundation Committee 07 October 2014 Page 2 of 6 Minutes allow the University to expand its involvement with the wider community. It was commented that the religious values of the University would not be overwhelming but instead would be a balance of different faiths. It was suggested that the words to define this concept would need to be carefully considered within the Strategic Plan to ensure that it will not be overly religious. It was commented that the University’s research on liberal arts is at the forefront of research in Europe. The importance of understanding how a liberal arts education will look and develop was emphasised. The focus will be on the public good within the liberal arts programme. A new member of staff has been appointed to further investigate the notion of liberal arts within the University. 14-15/FC09 Chapel Refurbishment RECEIVED: An oral update from the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Chapel on the Chapel Refurbishment.

The Vice-Chancellor reported that there are many aspects relating to the

refurbishment of the Chapel but the overall vision for the building is that it will be startling in holiness and beauty. Interior design consultants are currently in consultation and members of the Committee are encouraged to feedback ideas on the design of the space. It was also reported that there are plans to build an extension on the back of the Chapel as a space for private worship. It was explained that the space will be simple and stylish and that the character of the space will be retained and further developed. The Director of
