The Apostle Islands are the most northern group of Wisconsin islands in Lake Superior. We are off to the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands stretch out to a twelve mile archipelago of various islands which contain beaches, sandstone cliffs, caves, bogs, and dense forests. All kinds of wildlife is present. We have seen many birds out here. I will review three of the Apostle Islands here. Basswood Island: It measures about 3.5 x 11.5 miles. This island is characterized by steep rocky shores and a large forest of hardwood trees. A unique rock formation stretching out from the island is known as “Honeymoon Rock.” Raspberry Island: This was one of our last islands that we visited. The size of the island is only ½ to 1 ¼ miles wide. Raspberry Island was the second light station built on the Apostle Islands. A double dwelling was built for the lighthouse keepers and family. Devils Island: This island is not only the most dramatic and picturesque of the Apostle Islands but one of the most prized possessions of the state of Wisconsin. This island is known for its caves naturally carved out of this red sandstone along the shoreline. This island is small. It measures ½ mile by 1 ¼ miles wide. The lighthouse on Devils Island to me is the most dramatic lighthouse that I have seen in the state of Wisconsin. Notice also there is a radio antenna next to the lighthouse. Devils Island is the most northern Point of the state of Wisconsin. If you want more information about the Apostle Islands you can contact: http://www.apostleisland.com I’m Lonnie Paulson.
