November 16th is the celebration of St. Gertrude the Great. She is a great because of her love of Jesus and the closeness with Him that she experienced while still in this life. One of the things that stands out about St. Gertrude is that she was devoted to praying for the repose of the souls in . We need reminders such as St. Gertrude and indeed the whole month of November to recall the important act of love which is ours of praying for the dead.

At the end of last month was the celebration of which, although being a big secular holiday, is really rooted in deep Christian meaning. It is the eve of “all Hallows” which is an old English manner of saying “all .” A motif that runs throughout the celebration of Halloween is that of a tombstone. Many lawns are deco- rated with them and we see them depicted in many ways. They all have something very Catholic in common for which people do not even see. Most of the tombstones used for scary effect have the letters RIP written on them. Fortuitously, the English translation of the Latin words matches in that the abbreviation works for both languages; however, the true meaning is not clear in English. In English, we take the initials to mean “,” which is only partially true. In Latin the verb, to rest, is presented in the subjunctive mood which makes it a form of a re- quest. The literal translation from the Latin should be, “May he/she rest in peace.” In other words, it is not simply indicating something, it is a prayer. On the very tombstone of the deceased is inscribed an abbreviated form of prayer—a request to God—let this person rest in peace. The image of the tombstone for Halloween is meant to frighten; but in reality, it is a hopeful reminder to pray for the person.

Those who have died in a less than perfect state of grace cannot be with God until they are perfected, and we call this purgatory. It is a hopeful, yet painful reality for many of our beloved dead and one day even for ourselves that we may have to go through a purification in order to be with God forever. Sometimes we convince ourselves that our loved ones are in because they were good or nice or holy people, and hopefully that is true of all who have died. But perfection in the eyes of God is not only seen in our actions but mostly in the ways that we allow Him to act and to be in us. This is perhaps best understood by learning His will, accepting and following it even when it leads to inconvenience, suffering and sacrifice. When we turn away from His will, we turn away from Him; and if we die in such a state, we need the purification of purgatory.

In the Mass for a funeral, there is a prayer that says that the tomb has become a sign of hope. These are sweet words even for people, much like ourselves, who may have died in a less than perfect state, because there is still hope. These words remind us that even if we do not die a saint, God can still make us a saint even in . Thank God for St. Gertrude, for the month of November, and for tombstones inscribed with RIP, as they all remind us to pray for the repose of the souls of our beloved dead.
