Offer up your Holy Communions for the souls in purgatory. 3. Have Masses said for your departed loved ones, especially on the anniversary of his or her death. 4. Pray The Way Of The Cross for Souls in Purgatory. 5. Pray the special Holy Souls Rosary. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Holy Rosary is the most powerful prayer. 6. Obtain indulgences: Indulgences reduce or cancel the temporal punishment that we incur through sin.* There are many ways to obtain indulgences through pious actions, and we can apply their merits to the dead. You can find a partial list of indulgences here. If you visit a church or oratory on All Souls Day and there recite the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostle's Creed, you can earn a plenary (full) indulgence applicable only to the souls in purgatory (under the usual conditions).* 7. Give alms: The giving of material assistance to the poor has always been considered a penance that can be offered for the Holy Souls. "For almsgiving saves from death and purges away every sin" (Tobit 12:9).

All Saints Day is intended to honor the memory of countless unknown and uncanonized saints who have no feast days. Today we thank God for giving ordinary men and women a share in His holiness and Heavenly glory as a reward for their Faith. This feast is observed to teach us to honor the saints, both by imitating their lives and by seeking their intercession for us before Christ, the only mediator between God and man (I Tm 2:5). The Church reminds us today that God’s call for holiness is universal, that all of us are called to live in His love and to make His love real in the lives of those around us. Holiness is related to the word wholesomeness. We grow in holiness when we live wholesome lives of integrity, truth, justice, charity, mercy, and compassion, sharing our blessings with others.     Theological themes in Newman’s Dream of Gerontius 1 Newman’s Theology in the Dream of Gerontius, Juan R. Vélez G., New Blackfriars, Vol. 82, No. 967 (2001), 387-398. Newman’s theology in the “Dream of Gerontius” (This version had some minor changes for publication). On the second centennial of Venerable John Henry Newman’s birth (1801-1890) we wish to draw attention to his celebrated Dream of Gerontius. Newman once humbly remarked to a friend that “It was written by accident – and it was published by accident.”1, yet his personal history proves otherwise; it was the fruit of many years of agonizing study and prayer leading him to the Roman Catholic Church. It is rightly considered by some a major contribution to Roman Catholic spirituality and doctrine which continues to inspire the theology and piety of men and women. The Dream of Gerontius expresses in poetical form many truths of Catholic dogma concerning creation, redemption and eschatology. This, Newman’s longest poem, composed in 1865, almost twenty years after his entrance into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, underscores his Catholic beliefs in the mysterious complementarity between God’s justice and mercy whereby at the particular judgment, some souls require a final preparation for heaven. In his Plain and Parochial Sermons Newman had rebutted the 19th century denial of possible eternal damnation. In the Dream of Gerontius, he emphasized God’s merciful dispensation that broadness the narrow fundamentalist perspective of heaven or hell.     Gertrude the Great, OSB Born in Eisleben, Thuringia, Germany, on January 6, 1256; died at Helfta in Saxony, c. 1302. "O Lord Jesus Christ, in union with Your most perfect actions I commend to You this my work, to be directed according to Your adorable will, for the salvation of all mankind. Amen." --Saint Gertrude Almost nothing is known about one of my favorite saint's birth or death. Saint Gertrude was probably an orphan because at age five she was received by the Cistercian nuns of Helfta and placed under the care of Saint Mechtilde (see below) of Hackeborn, mistress of novices. (Helfta was actually a Black Benedictine convent, which had been falsely designated as Cistercian for political reasons in many early records.) The intellectual level was high in the castle convent of Helfta, which was then run by the noblewoman, Saint Gertrude of Hackeborn (1232-1292). Even so, Saint Gertrude was considered an outstanding student, who devoted herself to study, especially literature and philosophy. Eventually she became a professed nun but still she concentrated on the secular. God, however, is a great teacher. Gertrude learned that when she began to get carried away with her love of learning. She didn't go so far as to neglect GERTRUDE THE GREAT the Lord completely, but she did push him off a bit to the side. Her mind was growing, but it was growing faster than her heart. Gertrude's life has a lesson for intellectuals who will profit from her example. If a syllogism moves you to ecstasy and a dissertation about the love of God makes you speechless with joy, then beware.
