  • TWO FORMS of "BE" in MALAYALAM1 Tara Mohanan and K.P
TWO FORMS OF "BE" IN MALAYALAM1 Tara Mohanan and K.P. Mohanan National University of Singapore 1. INTRODUCTION Malayalam has two verbs, uNTE and aaNE, recognized in the literature as copulas (Asher 1968, Variar 1979, Asher and Kumari 1997, among others). There is among speakers of Malayalam a clear, intuitively perceived meaning difference between the verbs. One strong intuition is that uNTE and aaNE correspond to the English verbs "have" and "be"; another is that they should be viewed as the "existential" and "equative" copulas respectively.2 However, in a large number of contexts, these verbs appear to be interchangeable. This has thwarted the efforts of a clear characterization of the meanings of the two verbs. In this paper, we will explore a variety of syntactic and semantic environments that shed light on the differences between the constructions with aaNE and uNTE. On the basis of the asymmetries we lay out, we will re-affirm the intuition that aaNE and uNTE are indeed equative and existential copulas respectively, with aaNE signaling the meaning of “x is an element/subset of y" and uNTE signaling the meaning of existence of an abstract or concrete entity in the fields of location or possession. We will show that when aaNE is interchangable with uNTE in existential clauses, its function is that of a cleft marker, with the existential meaning expressed independently by the case markers on the nouns. Central to our exploration of the two copulas is the discovery of four types of existential clauses in Malayalam, namely: Neutral: with the existential verb uNTE.

PROF. SCARIA ZACHARIA Karikkampally, Perunna, Changanacherry 686 102, Tel: (+91) 481 242 1363 Kerala, India. Email: [email protected] SUMMARY Prof. Scaria Zacharia energised Malayalam knowledge network by adding more than one hundred texts to its canons. His discovery of the rare works of Hermann Gundert and many invaluable texts of Malayalam from the Tübingen University archives in Germany was a groundbreaking moment in the history of Malayalam studies. Digital versions of these manuscripts are now available for scholars across the world. This paved way for many empirical and theoretical developments in literary historiography, textual analysis, comparative literature, translation studies, folklore, and cultural studies. His contributions to the area of Jewish Malayalam studies, particularly through Karkuzhali (a bilingual book on Jewish Malayalam folksongs published by the Hebrew University), not only revitalized the fading cultural memories of Kerala, but also showed Kerala as a hyphenated society citing text, practices, and narratives in different languages. His pioneering works have earned him many accolades like Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship at the University of Tübingen, DAAD Fellowship at the University of Tübingen, and Visiting Research Professor at Hebrew University, Israel. In view of his immense contributions, he was also appointed as the first Hermann Gundert Chair Professor at the University of Tübingen. He has delivered invited public lectures at many leading institutions across the world, including American

LANGUAGE IN INDIA www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 A GRAMMAR OF MALAYALAM Ravi Sankar S Nair, Ph.D. [email protected] Language in India www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 12 : 11 November 2012 Ravi Sankar S Nair, Ph.D. A GRAMMAR OF MALAYALAM 1 Preface The grammatical tradition in Malayalam, compared to the three other major Dravidian languages, is neither extensive nor ancient. Liilaatilakam, dated to the closing years of 14th century, is generally considered as the earliest treatise referring to grammatical structures of Malayalam. This, however, is not a work of grammar as such, but deals mainly with rhetoric as applied to Manipravaalam, the literary language that was an admixture of Malayalam and Sanskrit. Except some brief treatises in Portuguese, Latin and English authored by missionaries, up to 19th century Malayalam did not have a proper grammar. Hermann Gundert’s Malayala bhasaa vyaakaranam first published in 1851 and the revised and enlarged version coming out in 1868 was the first proper grammatical treatise of Malayalam. Rev. George Mathen’s Malayaalmayute vyaakaranam (1863), Pachu Mootthatu’s Keeralabhaasaa vyaakaranam, A.R Rajaraaja Varma’s Keerala paaniniyam (originally published in 1896; revised and enlarged edition in 1917) and M. Seshagiri Prabhu’s Vyaakaranamitram (1904) followed. Grammatical literature from this point of time was essentially focused on Keerala paaniniiyam, which came to enjoy almost the status of an ‘authorised grammar’ of Malayalam. While Rajaraja Varma’s work stands out by its breadth of coverage and scholarship, it cannot be denied that grammatical tradition in Malayalam has remained too long within the ambit of a grammar written nearly a century back.

=================================================================== Language in India www.languageinindia.comISSN 1930-2940 Vol. 16:10 October 2016 =================================================================== Historical Development of the Malayalam Present Tense Marker ‘Uṉṉu’ Parvathy Prasad S., M.Phil. ==================================================================== Abstract Malayalam is a South Dravidian language. History of the Malayalam language starts with vaazappalli inscription written in 832 AD. The present paper is an attempt to find out the development of the present tense marker ‘uṉṉu’ in Malayalam language. Keywords: Malayalam, present tense marker, historical development. Introduction A comparative study of the various non-past tense forms in the Dravidian languages reveals that the formation of the present tense as distinct from the future tense is a later development in the family. The present tense suffixes in many of the languages are historically relatable to the future tense suffixes found in the same language or in the some other sister languages. According to Keralapaanini, the Dravidian languages did not consider the present as a distinct time. In instances where Aryan languages use present tense, the Dravidian languages use future tense. The present form of the predicates is of later origin. (C J Roy, 1999). Literature Review Many scholars have different opinions about the development of Malayalam present tense marker ‘uṉṉu’. Some of these are given below. Keralapaanini, a well-known Malayalam grammarian, stated that the present tense form which denotes the sense of some sort of continuous action, and this continuous action is attained Language in India www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 16:10 October 2016 Parvathy Prasad S., M.Phil. • Negation in Dravidian Languages
Negation in Dravidian languages A descriptive typological study on verbal and non-verbal negation in simple declarative sentences Camilla Lindblom Department of Linguistics Magister Thesis 15 ECTS credits General Linguistics Spring term 2014 Supervisor: Ljuba Veselinova Examiner: Henrik Liljegren Reviewer: Bernhard Wälchli Negation in Dravidian languages A descriptive typological study on verbal and non-verbal negation in simple declarative sentences Camilla Lindblom Abstract Over the years the typology of negation has been much described and discussed. However, focus has mainly been on standard negation. Studies on non-verbal negation in general and comparative studies covering the complete domain of non-verbal negation in particular are less common. The strategies to express non-verbal negation vary among languages. In some languages the negation strategy employed in standard negation is also used in non-verbal negation. Several researchers have argued that languages express negation of non-verbal predications using special constructions. This study examines and describes negation strategies in simple declarative sentences in 18 Dravidian languages. The results suggest that the majority of the Dravidian languages included in this study express standard negation by the use of a negative suffix while non-verbal negation is expressed by a negative verb. Further distinctions are made in the negation of non-verbal predications in that different negation markers are used for attributive and existential/possessive predications respectively. Keywords Typology, non-verbal negation, Dravidian languages Sammanfattning Negationens typologi har under de gångna åren varit föremål för en omfattande beskrivning och debatt. Trots detta har fokus huvudsakligen varit på standardnegation. Studier av icke-verbal negation i allmänhet och komparativa studier av domänen icke-verbal negation i synnerhet hör till ovanligheterna.
