Commemorating Keppel Club’s 111th year & the nation’s 50th with 60’s nostalgia A double celebration... like none other

Meet the cast and crew! From our iconic Veteran soccer player Sama Allapitchay to Ma Jies, Samsui women, PAP representative, matas and district gangsters, these are the people behind the set up and the success of the evening’s event.

The Good Old Days in my generation were different from my parents’. I personally think I would enjoy their era a lot more than my own. They danced to A-Go-Go in discotheques, lived in Kampongs, ran down five-foot ways and hadMatas in shorts and baton in hand. It was an age of vibrancy with Singapore still moving from third-world to first. They have seen it all: dirty rivers to clean streets, minus the cruelty of World War II that our grandparents had to suffer through.

A 80s kid was born with a comfortable roof above my head in a typical HDB. I had buses and taxis for public transport. Soon after, trains were introduced. Compared to the street peddling of old days, I had a wet market to go to, where stalls have proper hygiene standards to abide by. I was born Keppel Club’s Treasurer, Mr Teh and in a first-world country. One with a tinge of the past. The his family grabbing a quick photo 80’s was characterised by payphones for quick chats, pasar with our police in shorts. malam as the neighbourhood’s makeshift shopping mall and wayangs every Hungry Ghost Festival.

Sadly, with the advancement in technology, came the slow but sure lost of the charms and presence of past generations. So when Keppel Club announced that it would be throwing a Double Celebration event on Saturday, Aug 29 to simultaneously commemorate both the Club’s 111th birthday and the nation’s 50th, my father immediately informed me about it. He knew it was my kind of party. I am an enthusiast for all things old-school, a lover of vintage. Were it up to me alone, my home would be decorated with old-school barber chairs and Peranakan-tiled walls!

Keppel Links A lively performance that combines 14 October 2015 our nation’s core ethnic dances opened the evening’s entertainment. I grew up with Keppel Club as my backyard. The family was at the club every single weekend. I made friends from swim class and we would spend the evening playing in the Games room after dinner. My parents would be at the Golfer’s Lounge eating and drinking away after my dad’s weekly golf game. When my friends said their goodbyes, I would head to the KTV lounge to look for my parents. There, I listened to them sing golden tunes from Bee Gees. We spent a lot of time at Keppel and till today, this is a weekly tradition we try to upkeep. It is sad to know that my children will not have this opportunity for long as Keppel Club's lease will come to an end in 2021.

This double celebration, 111th birthday in the SG50 year, will probably be the most memorable party in the Club’s long history. I am so proud of the staff and Management team for coming up with this splendid soiree for its members. I have run company events before and know how large-scale and out-of-hand things can get. Engaging an event company is always the easiest way out. But this was not an option for the talented team at Keppel Club. They had planned every aspect of this party in-house. The game stalls, food stalls, photo-taking booths and human props were all manned by Keppel Club staff! They could have hired talents for this but really, this decision to involve every ground staff made it a lot more momentous and meaningful.

From the photo booths to the buffet spread, everyone was in good cheer as they basked in the nostalgic mood of the event.

Three cheers and a hearty shout of Keppel Links “Happy Birthday” to our club’s 111th October 2015 15 year and our nation’s 50th . CentreStory CentreStory

Most impressive was the photo booth set up. They were that I was not the only one having the time of my life posing not just BOOTHS. Taking care of every prop and character for the cameras. detail, they transformed the swimming pool area into a live set right out of a television screen! Moving about it, I felt That evening, I wished I had a free hand to take more still like we were on site and ready to shoot a movie. There were shots of the props. But… my little girl was my Samsui Matas, Sam Seng Kias, Ah Mahs, Kachang Puteh Man and many “Koala” for the night. With my Samsui girl in one arm and more! They even incorporated the latest fad - Chan Tian my Coolie boy in my other hand, we were, naturally, zeroed Wen’s Unbelievable character - into the scene. They should in by everyone. We had acquired their costumes from the have told me! I could have called my uncle (the real deal) to Children’s Costume Specialist and their outfits were a success! drop by for a guest appearance. The scenes they had put How well they blended into the setting! Everyone wanted a up were so detailed! Looking around, it was quickly evident picture with the Coolie boy and Samsui girl. However, the little one was sceptical, which placed her on high-alert about the whole deal. She must be thinking, “What is going on here!”

To be honest, my expectations of the food were not high and had planned to dine at either Peony Jade or Peramakan after the party. I was so wrong! Going around, we noticed that the food stalls were manned by in-house chefs who cooked right before our eyes with large woks by their side – just like the Good Old Days! Tasting the Kueh Pie Tee first and then the Chicken rice, we were truly impressed. One mouthful after another was filled with gushes of gastronomic appreciation from both my husband and I. Wow! This is good! That is delicious! Ooh can you take more of that please? We didn’t just eat that evening. We feasted! Above and beyond the food, it really is hats off to the Management and team of staff for the effort put into the ambience and set up. Even as we dined by the poolside, our plates got cleared by Ah Mahs! Can you imagine the sights and sounds of being transported back decades to that nostalgic era?

Keppel Links 16 October 2015 The Game Stalls were a lot fun as well. Ewan had a go at “Wheel of Fortune”, hitting can drinks with tennis balls, shot-gunning targets and throwing rings into bottles. There was also a very meaningful stall, a modern one that allowed us customise our own Keppel Club Double Celebration Badge. Basically, we can write anything we wanted on a piece of circular paper, which was then put through a badge-making machine for a quick lamination. Naturally, our eager-beaver Ewan wanted to leave his Thoroughly enjoying the games, it quickly becomes clear that there is still appeal yet in old kampong fun. mark as well. He drew an odd shape, which I thought looked like a dragon. So, I added an eye and wings and ta-da! I guess this is what they meant when they say: Transform your children’s doodles into art pieces.

Wrapping up the evening, who do you think won best- dressed? The Coolie boy and Samsui baby, of course. Cue: proud momma! I sent pictures to my dad and he asked: “Does anybody know that they are Jim Leong’s grandchildren?” He too, must be super proud.

“Towkay Neo” in the making!

Line Dance Fiesta 2015 Celebrating SG50 with dance By Catherine Seow

National Day may have come and gone but all across our sunny island country, the spirit of SG50 remains high. Among those who were still in a celebratory mode were our line dance enthusiasts. Gathering together on the afternoon of Aug 30 at Keppel Hall in bold red and white, our 200 line dancers celebrated our country’s successful 50 years with much style. Spinning rhythmic tunes from our good old 60’s, it was not long before the deejay had our dancers rocking out on the dance floor. From Cha Cha to Waltz, and Disco to Country Western, the afternoon was truly a dance fiesta as everyone moved in sync with the music.
