The study takes off from hip-hop scholars Pennycook’s and Mitchell’s proposition of hip-hop as “dusty foot philosophy” which is rooted at local dusty ground while articulating philosophies of global significance. This study aims to examine what kind of spaces are these dusty streets in Tehran and how does Tehran’s urban landscape inform music making and music aesthetics. This study focuses on how notions of belonging, space, and place have been expressed by rappers and rockers both in their music making and their embodied use of urban spaces. Followingly it will observe how urban realities, urban space, and geographical segregation are perceived, challenged, and reclaimed through their craft. The study asks how underground musicians are debating questions of authenticity that have risen along music’s localization, and how musicians strive for artistic legitimacy which would verify their street credibility both within their local music scenes and wider society, as well as within global music community. -

She is a social historian of the Middle East who specialises in the contemporary history of Iran. She has taught history courses including World Civilization since the 16th century at California State University, Fullerton and Women in the Middle East at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests include gender and Islam, youth, culture, and intellectual movements in Iran. Dr Maghazei has researched various topics in both Persian and English including the dominant discourse of orientalism on Muslim women, the feminist movement in Iran and Iranian youth. Her publications include: ‘The Account of Creation in the Holy Scriptures: A Comparative Study between the Bible and the Qur’an’, Humanity, Tehran, 2010; ‘Islamic Feminism: Periphery or Growing Trend’, Groningen University, Centre for Gender Studies, 2012; and ‘Teens’ Life in Iran’ in Teen’s Life in the Middle East, Greenwood Press, 2003. -

Soixante-dix ans de chansons pour la https://www.contretemps.eu Palestine redaction Si la chanson est reconnue depuis longtemps comme un écho des opinions populaires, voire comme un instrument de ralliement derrière une cause, dans le cas de la Palestine elle joue un rôle supplémentaire. Ce n’est pas un mystère : l’entreprise de colonisation du territoire palestinien s’est très tôt accompagnée d’une colonisation culturelle qui a entravé, menacé de disparition, voire totalement nié la culture palestinienne. Dans un tel contexte, les chansons palestiniennes, ou même celles qui « parlent de Palestine », en plus de participer à la lutte proprement dite, constituent en elles-mêmes des actes de résistance, des « preuves de vie », des preuves de créativité d’une population qui ne se laisse pas détruire. C’est cette histoire que nous allons explorer ici. L’article qui fait autorité sur l’histoire récente de la Palestine à travers la musique est celui de Joseph Massad, publié en anglais en 2003[1]. C’est à partir de cet article que je propose ici une approche similaire, en français, complétée par une mise à jour rendue nécessaire notamment par l’arrivée massive du rap dans les années 2000. Cette approche sera également étendue aux musiciens occidentaux qui, depuis les années 1980, contribuent à la mise en musique d’une histoire palestinienne, y compris depuis 2005, à travers leur participation à la composante culturelle de la campagne internationale de Boycott, Désinvestissement et Sanctions (BDS) lancée contre l’État israélien. Néanmoins, comme Massad, je ne rechercherai pas l’exhaustivité, mais à souligner comment la musique d’une époque réagit à l’actualité, comment elle exprime les sentiments populaires, parfois en contradiction avec les discours officiels, mais aussi comment elle mobilise les populations selon des registres « de leur temps ». -

Fragmented Allegories of National Authenticity: Art and Politics of the Iranian New Wave Cinema, 1960-79 by Farbod Honarpisheh Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Farbod Honarpisheh All rights reserved Abstract Fragmented Allegories of National Authenticity: Art and Politics of the Iranian New Wave Cinema, 1960-79 Farbod Honarpisheh The New Wave (Moj-e Now), as the rather large body of “quality films” made in Iran before the 1979 revolution came to be known, forms the main thematic concern of this study. From start to end, however, this primary track of investigation is opened up to other mediums of cultural production: modernist Persian fiction and poetry, the visual arts scene, the discourse on ethnography and “folklore studies,” and the critical texts produced by public intellectuals. The second main theme coming to the fore is the intersection of the emergent “discourse of authenticity,” the Iranian intellectuals’ growing demand for “cultural rootedness,” and the production of modernist aesthetics in literature, arts, and cinema. Introduced early in the text, the idea of “modernism of uneven development” provides the theoretical frame for this project; the recurrences of the hypothesis, particularly as it pertains to a temporal divide between the city and the countryside, are discerned and analysed. The Iranian New Wave Cinema, I contend, always showed an ethnographic register, as it too was after worlds and times deemed as vanishing. This “movement” in cinematic modernism first emerged from within the documentary mode, which began to flourish in Iran from the 1960s. -
