The study takes off from hip-hop scholars Pennycook’s and Mitchell’s proposition of hip-hop as “dusty foot philosophy” which is rooted at local dusty ground while articulating philosophies of global significance. This study aims to examine what kind of spaces are these dusty streets in Tehran and how does Tehran’s urban landscape inform music making and music aesthetics. This study focuses on how notions of belonging, space, and place have been expressed by rappers and rockers both in their music making and their embodied use of urban spaces. Followingly it will observe how urban realities, urban space, and geographical segregation are perceived, challenged, and reclaimed through their craft. The study asks how underground musicians are debating questions of authenticity that have risen along music’s localization, and how musicians strive for artistic legitimacy which would verify their street credibility both within their local music scenes and wider society, as well as within global music community. -

Contemporary Iranian Cinema Prof. Hossein Khosrowjah [email protected] Winter 2017: Between January 24and February 28 Times: Tuesday 1-3 Location: Freight & Salvage Coffee House The post-revolutionary Iranian national cinema has garnered international popularity and critical acclaim since the late 1980s for being innovative, ethical, and compassionate. This course will be an overview of post-revolutionary Iranian national cinema. We will discuss and look at works of the most prominent films of this period including Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Bahram Beyzaii, and Asghar Farhadi. We will consider the dominant themes and stylistic characteristics of Iranian national cinema that since its ascendance in the late 1980s has garnered international popularity and critical acclaim for being innovative, ethical and compassionate. Moreover, the role of censorship and strong feminist tendencies of many contemporary Iranian films will be examined. She is a social historian of the Middle East who specialises in the contemporary history of Iran. She has taught history courses including World Civilization since the 16th century at California State University, Fullerton and Women in the Middle East at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests include gender and Islam, youth, culture, and intellectual movements in Iran. Dr Maghazei has researched various topics in both Persian and English including the dominant discourse of orientalism on Muslim women, the feminist movement in Iran and Iranian youth. Her publications include: ‘The Account of Creation in the Holy Scriptures: A Comparative Study between the Bible and the Qur’an’, Humanity, Tehran, 2010; ‘Islamic Feminism: Periphery or Growing Trend’, Groningen University, Centre for Gender Studies, 2012; and ‘Teens’ Life in Iran’ in Teen’s Life in the Middle East, Greenwood Press, 2003. -

Background of the Study Literature is the presentation of human life. Literary works as the process of reflection of the author’s imagination that shows the phenomenon in his life. It means that when the authors are making their literary works, they express the problems in relationship from the author’s point of view. Of course it gives influence in every works of an author. Literary works deal with human life, it is appropriate to use psychology as an approach in understanding human being from psychological point of view. With such social interaction, an understanding of literary work also has conspiracy with human being. “Since literature is the exposition of man’s mental life, it can be said that literature has a tight relationship to psychology. Literature and psychology have the same object of research that is human being” (Wellek and Warren, 1984: 91). “Anxiety is such a painful state that we are incapable of tolerating it very long anxiety is the key variable in almost all theories of personality. The result of conflict, which is an inevitable part of life, anxiety is often seen major component of dynamic personality. Freud’s analysis of anxiety in terms both normal and abnormal functioning had great impact on later theorist, and it has continued to influence many clinicians” (John and Pervin, 1997: 86 ). -

Scorsese directs Silence from a screenplay he wrote with Jay Cocks. The film, based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 award-winning novel, examines the spiritual and religious question of God’s silence in the face of human suffering. Martin Scorsese and Emma Koskoff and Irwin Winkler produce alongside Randall Emmett, Barbara De Fina, Gastón Pavlovich, and Vittorio Cecchi Gori with executive producers Dale A. Brown, Matthew J. Malek, Manu Gargi, Ken Kao, Dan Kao, Niels Juul, Chad A. Verdi, Gianni Nunnari, Len Blavatnik and Aviv Giladi. Silence stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider Man, Hacksaw Ridge), Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Paterson) and Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List, Taken). The film follows the young missionaries, Father Sebastian Rodrigues (Garfield) and Father Francisco Garupe (Driver) as they search for their missing teacher and mentor and minister to the Christian villagers they encounter who are forced to worship in secret. At that time in Japan, feudal lords and ruling Samurai were determined to eradicate Christianity in their midst; Christians were persecuted and tortured, forced to apostatize, that is, renounce their faith or face a prolonged and agonizing death.
