  • Between Old and New Rome
Jonas Thungren Lindbärg “A burdensome matter it is today to abandon the delicate and subtle customs of the Latin people, i.e. the Franks, and to return to the Between Old and New Rome dullness of the old Armenians.” Thus wrote the Armenian archbishop Nerses, not without a hint of Armenian and Bulgarian Contacts with the Papacy around 1204 sarcasm, when defending his endeavour to unite the Armenian Church with the Roman in the late twelfth century. What this old dullness was is less clear but it seems that Latin customs had indeed become both Jonas Thungren Lindbärg desirable and powerful, for this ecumenical endeavour met with success and only a handful of years later something similar occured in the Between Old and New Rome Old and New Between Balkans, when a newly founded Bulgarian empire submitted to the Roman Church as well. The rulers of these realms would not only profess their loyalty to the Roman Church but would also carry papal banners into battle and exchange letters with the pope. This study examines how these rulers used their relationships with the Papacy, as well as how the pope used his relationship with them. It is a study of ideas and of symbolic power, of how kingdoms and empires were imagined and expressed. It is a study of the new and the old, of two new power-centres emerging from the old peripheries of the crumbling Byzantine Empire, of leaders weaving together real and imagined histories with new influences in order to establish and profess their legitimate rule. Barney, W. J. Lewis, J. A. Beach and Oliver Berghof Index More information General index The following index includes only important terms and sub-topics, and most proper names, from the Etymologies. For larger topics consult the Analytical Table of Contents. Both English and Latin terms are indexed, but when a Latin term is close in meaning and form to the corresponding English translation, only the English is given. Book X is a dense list of such terms descriptive of human beings as “lifeless,” “hateful,” “generous,” “enviable.” Its Latin terms are in alphabetical order. Seeing that such terms are unlikely to be the object of an index search, and that including them would unduly swell the bulk of an index already large, we exclude Book X here, though not from the two indexes that follow. The valuable index of the Oroz Reta–Casquero Spanish translation of the Etymologies divides the terms into categories: a general index followed by indexes of proper names, geographical terms, botanical terms, zoological terms, and stones and minerals. INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted you will find a target note listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in "sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

  • Pontifical Insignia: Their Origin and Use
PONTIFICAL INSIGNIA: THEIR ORIGIN AND USE ON the 21st June 1968, Pope Paul VI promulgated a motuproprio\ fol 2 lowed by an instruction of the Sacred Congregation of Rites , to put into effect a proposal approved at the Second Vatican Council and promul gated in the Constitution 'Sacrosanctum Concilium' on the Sacred Lit urgy, that all pontifical insignia should be reserved for people who really exercise episcopal jurisdiction. 3 The main reason for this reform in the use of pontifical insignia was primarily the desire to enhance episcopal dignity: in fact, the motu proprio says, these insignia were introduced during the ages to stress the dignity and the power of the bishops, who preside in place of God over the flock, whose shepherds they are, as teachers of doctrine, priests of sacred worship, and officers of good order.4 Beside s, the tendency today is that liturgical rites should be distinguished by a noble simplicity5, that the symbols and the visible signs of the Liturgy should mean what they are really supposed to mean, and that the meaning should be within the people's power of comprehension such that they would normally not require a lot of explaining. All this would be lacking in the case of pontifical insignia as long as there would be several ecclesiastics enjoying pontifical privileges without being bishops 01' exercising episcopal jurisdiction. It is true that these privileges were granted during the ages by the 1 Litterae Apostolieae motu proprio datae Pontificalia insignia, A.A.S. 70 (1968) p.374. 2Saera Congr. • Szaty I Odznaki Liturgiczne Oraz Stroje Chórowe W Ikonografii ______
MACALISTER, M.A. Member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland LONDON ELLIOT STOCK, 62, PATERNOSTER ROW 1896 P REFACE WITHIN comparatively recent years the discovery has been made that it is possible to treat the Bible, for critical purposes, as though it were an ordinary item of national literature, while maintaining a fitting reverence for it as the inspired Word ; and that by so doing a flood of sidelight is cast upon it which illuminates the obscurity of some of its most dlflicult passages. So, to compare lesser things with greater, it is possible and advisable to discard all feeling of ecclesiastlclsm (so to term it) when speaking of ecclesiastical antiquities. The science of eccle- siology is of comparatively recent growth, and it has hitherto suffered much at the hands of those who have approached it not so much to learn the plain lessons it teaches, as to force it to declare the existence or non-existence in early or — viii Preface. mediaeval times of certain rites and observances. While we should treat ancient churches and their furniture with respect—a respect which should not be denied to the despised, though often quaint and interesting, high pews and west galleries as being edifices or instruments formed for the use of the worshippers of God, yet for antiquarian purposes they should be examined and dissected in exactly the same spirit as that in which we investi- gate the temples of ancient Greece, or the stone weapons of prehistoric man.

INLEIDING.
