This starts with an introduction to the Course underlining the significant developments in chronological order and covers 4 major themes with coverage of 18 sub-themes or Units. For the convenience of study, all the Units have been presented with a uniform structure. Objectives as the first section of the Unit have been included to help you find what are you expected to learn from the study of the Unit. Please go through these objectives carefully and keep reflecting and checking them after studying a few sections of the Unit. Introduction of the Unit introduces you to the subject area covered and guides you to the way subject matter is presented. These are followed by the main subject area discussed through sections and sub-sections for ease of comprehension. In between the text, some check your progress exercises have been provided. We advise you to attempt these as and when you reach them. These will help you assess your study and test your comprehension of the subject studied. Compare your answers with the answer guidelines provided after the summary. The key words and unfamiliar terms have been provided at the end of each Unit, which have been marked in bold in the text. At the end of each Unit under Suggested Readings we have also provided a list of books and references. These include sources and books which are useful or have been consulted for developing the material for the concerned Unit. You should try to study them. We have also included instructional videos for an enhanced understanding by the students. Please try to watch these videos, they will help you in understanding and learning the subject matter in an all- inclusive manner. 6 Trends in History Writing COURSE INTRODUCTION Periodization of Indian history in terms of Ancient, medieval and Modern is not questionable per se; in fact, we cannot do away with this. The problem begins when we tend to identify Ancient India with the ‘Hindu’, Medieval with the ‘Muslim’ and Modern with the ‘British’ period. Original materials, both published and unpublished, have been accumulating for the last sixtv years and their volume often frightens the average student. Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, therefore, suggested that a selection in a handy form should be made where all the useful documents should be in- cluded. I must confess that no historical document has found a place in the present volume, but I felt that the chronicles or bakhars could not be excluded from the present series and I began with Sabhasad bakhar leaving the documents for a subsequent volume. This is by no means the first English rendering of Sabhasad. Jagannath Lakshman Mankar translated Sabhasad more than thirty years ago from a single manuscript. The late Dr. Vincent A. Smith over- estimated the value of Mankar's work mainly because he did not know its exact nature. A glance at the catalogue of Marathi manuscripts in the British Museum might have convinced him that the original Marathi Chronicle from which Mankar translated has not been lost.

CHAPTER THREE THE RISE OF MRAUK U INFLUENCE (1593-1612) The start of Arakanese rule in Chittagong around 1590 was as we saw closely connected with the development of an Arakanese-Portuguese partnership. The account of Fernberger and the earlier involvement of the Portuguese mercenaries in the army of the Bengal sultans are testimony to the important role of these Portuguese communities in the Arakan-Bengal continuum. When Man Phalaung died in 1593 he was succeeded by his son king Man Raja- kri (1593-1612).1 Man Raja-kri would continue the expansion of Arakanese rule along the shores of the Bay of Bengal. In 1598 he would take part in the siege of Pegu that would lead to the end of the first Toungoo dynasty in Burma in 1599. The early years of the seventeenth century would also witness the first armed confrontations between the Arakanese and the Mughals in south-eastern Bengal.

    District Survey report of Jalore District 1.0 Introduction The district derives its name from the town of Jalore, which is the headquarters of the district administration. District is located between latitudes 24º 37’ 00” to 25º 49’ 00” and longitudes 71º 11’00” to 73º 05’00” with an area of 10,640 Sq. kms (3.11% of the State). The district is part of Jodhpur Division. The district is composed of five sub-divisions viz. Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara which cover seven tehsils viz: Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara, Sayala, Bagora and seven blocks viz: Jalore, Ahore, Bhinmal, Sanchore, Raniwara, Sayala & Jaswantpura. Total number of villages in the district is 802 and it also has 3 urban towns. Total population of the district as per Census 2011 is 1828730 with male and female population of 936634 and 892096 respectively. Administrative divisions of Jalore district are depicted in the index map (Fig. 1). 2.0 Rainfall & Climate Average annual rainfall (1971-2012) of the district is 445.4 mm. However normal rainfall for the period 1901 to 1970 is 400.6 mm. The annual rainfall gradually decreases from southeastern part to northwestern part. Climate of the district is dry except during SW monsoon season. The cold season is from December to February and is followed by summer from March to June. Period from mid of September to end of November constitutes post monsoon season. The district experiences either mild or normal drought once in two years. Severe type of drought has been recorded at Ahore block. Most severe type of drought has been recorded at Bhinmal, Sanchore & Jaswantpura blocks.

PART- III BENGAL Being a distant province, Bengal had always been a problematic province for the Delhi Sultanate. Though Bengal was annexed to the Delhi Sultanate, a number of times it gained independence. Bengal was the eastern most province of the Delhi Sultanate. Long distance, uncomfortable climate, poor means of transport and communication made it difficult for the Sultans of Delhi to control the province of Bengal. Bakhtiyar Khilji, one of the military commanders of the Muhammad of Ghur was the first Muslim invader who annexed Bengal and Bihar by over throwing the Sena dynasty of Bengal. After his death his successors declared independence. Later Balban, the Sultan of Delhi brought Bengal under the control of Delhi Sultanate and appointed his son Bughra Khan as the Governor of Bengal. But soon after the death of Balban his son declared Bengal as an independence province. In order to solve the problems of the province of Bengal Ghyasuddin Tughlaq divided the Bengal province into three administrative units-Lakhnauti, Satgaon, Sonargaon. The problems of the Bengal province continued after finally Bengal emerged as an independent regional state in the 14th century. The history of Bengal entered a new phase when Haji-Shamsh-ud-din Ilyas khan founded a new dynasty, the Ilyas Shahi dynasty which ruled for around 125 years up to 1538 though in phases. Haji-Shamsh-ud-din Ilyas khan unified the independent kingdom of Bengal. Besides he made incursions into Nepal and Orissa.
