Clare County Review/Marion Press - June 18, 2021 - Page 3B Sports Marion bows out in regional semis to top-ranked Holton by Ben Murphy Sports Writer Marion’s exciting run through the Division 4 post- season came to an end on Saturday. The Lady Eagles matched up with top-ranked Holton, and were unable to slow them down, dropping the regional semi-final game, which was held at Frankfort, 17-4. “The game was much closer than the score,” head coach Ryan Raymond said. “We were able to score some runs late and extend the game to seven innings. SOFTBSOFTBALLALL They were rock solid on defense and had three really good pitchers, so it took a little bit of time to get the bats rolling.” The offense saw Payton Raymond lead the way with RESULRESULTSTS a home run and two singles, Georgia Meyer had two hits and stole four bases, Nicolette Maddox had a triple and an RBI and with one hit apiece was Harley Bear, Lexi Bain and Lyly Schwab. “Defensively we played a pretty solid game, we did have a few errors, but for the most part played well,” Raymond said. “The girls practiced hard all week and it showed Saturday, I am very proud of them. I was also pleased with the toughness that our two senior captains showed. Payton had a home run and when she was on the mound, took a line drive off of her shin. She collect- ed herself and got up and closed the game out. Nicolette had a big triple and worked her butt off behind the plate. She saw some lengthy innings in the crouch.” The loss ends what was otherwise a successful sea- son for the Lady, Eagles, who won their third straight district title; which was especially sweet after not even having a 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “All in all, I am glad that the underclassmen got to experience winning a district title and getting that game experience against that type of competition,” Raymond said. “I am very optimistic for next year.
