Where is the Venue: 2020 World Championship• The lake “Müggelsee” is located in the southeast of Berlin Berlin, Müggelsee• It is Germanyconsidered to be the largest lake in Berlin • 4.3km x 2.6km 2 Willokomen, welcome, velkommen, • Area 7.400km welkom, välkommen – be our guest! When: Dear Yngling Sailors! 18 to 25 July 2020 On behalf of the Yachtclub Berlin–Grünau and myself I would like to give you a warm welcome to the Yngling World Championship on my home territory, the Müggelsee in Berlin. As a former sailor I feel like we are so to say related – thanks to the Norwegian Jan Linge. When I was eleven I started as an sailor here on this lake. Henceforth the Müggelsee became my second home. In the following decades I spent thousands of hours here with training and competition and I am still convinced it is among the most appealing lake sailing areas out there. I know virtually all my fellow club members would agree. Originating from the Müggelsee they have a say in international competitive sailing! I invite you knowing that my Club has great experience and competence in organising highlevel sailing events. The very first European Champion- ship of the Soling class in 2015 held here on the Müggelsee is eloquent testimony to that. Last but not least my home city Berlin will appeal to you as a unique European metropolis rich with forests and lakes and with a certain time-spirit after the reunification in 1989. We are looking forward to you being World Championship participants of the Yngling class in Berlin in 2020! Jochen Schümann, Commodore YCBG yngling.de – ycbg.de

Nevertheless, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon everything stopped – Practice Race was announced! Great mood, the World Cup could begin! There were 46 teams, 14 from the Netherlands, 8 from Germany, 8 from Switzerland, 8 from Austria, 4 from Denmark, 2 from Australia, 1 from Slovenia and 1 from the USA. Tuesday, race day 1 start for the first race was set at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Dutch and Austrian teams were fighting. But suddenly a blue and white flag was shown – the race was cancelled! Why? We could not clarify. 15 minutes later, under the same conditions, the 1st race was started again and after that there was a 2nd race. AUT 276 the world champion team around Wolfgang Riha finished the day with position 16 and 3 – a good position for the next day! And in the evening – national party! Wednesday, race day 2 races 3 to 5 – Ora between 4-6 beaufort and of course corresponding waves from the south! Conditions that are very rare in Austria! All teams mastered these difficulties without major problems. AUT 276 finished the day with ranking 5-1-7. And in the evening – national party! Thursday, race day 3 race 6 to 8 – Ora between 3-4 beaufort. Good conditions for us Austrians. Wolfgang Riha finished the day with ranking 8-15-1, he was still fighting for the title! In the evening 50 years Yngling gala dinner, celebration, speeches and honours. Many world champions were among us. It was a great party. Friday, spare day all planed races were done so there was no sailing on that day. Saturday, closing day two races (9 and 10) had to be sailed. Due to the changing weather conditions race 9 was started at 1.30pm with light winds from the southeast. After that the last race was done. Thunderclouds from the north – the race was shortened – the finishline was set at the last mark. Wolfgang Riha finished the race in 15th place, this unfortunately made him no longer eligible for the top 3! Congratulations to an excellent 4th place for team AUT 276 Wolfgang Riha, Georg Skolaut, Thomas Postel! The new format will be sailed near Taarbæk harbour. Crews will change boats and sail many short races. 17

It was a tough year, with few activities in our club, but we have some highlights. In the beginning of May, we had a successful training weekend in Hadsund. Members of Hadsund Sailing Club, have recently bought Ynglings for private use. That weekend we had 6 local boats and DEN 111 with Jørgen Ring. The level was better than we thought and the sail club has many other activities also including Ynglings in the coming years. We saw at least 5 other Ynglings on shore, not yet ready to sail, so this proves that the future is bright in that area. Due to fewer competitors in the Fleet in Denmark, the Yngling Club has bought 2 boats. We will create a league, were boats owned by clubs, private and now 2 boats owned by Danish Yngling Club, will compete. The idea is that you can enter your team, 2 or 3 persons. After a short race, around 10 to 15 minutes you will change boat. The number of races depends on how many teams have entered. The concept is nearly ready and we will be happy to explain more. Maybe you have questions about YD 4, 1977 Yngling World Cup winner Claes insurance etc. Thunbo Christensen.

NOR 71 Yme is hull 125. So even with the oldest participating boat we should technically be competitive. Good to know. The photo of the Peugeot pick-up with integrated Yngling on top was most impressing. Probably not approved for traffic anymore, but it’s certainly an example of extreme creativity. Saturday at 0900 we were back at the sailing club. Now it was lighter winds from the south, about 5-6 m/s. The expectation was a lot more, but we still took the light jib. The height at upwind was not as good as yesterday and we weren’t able to trim it properly during the day. Probably the rig was too tight, particularly the inner shrouds. In the second race we got squeezed out by an (aggressive) Dutch team and had to restart at the tail of the fleet. We finished 18. The wind turned steady to the east and we even got some sun. In the third race we finished 14 again and in the light wind of the last race for the day we finished 12. The rain came back in the evening but we could stay indoors for the dinner. It was a nice gathering with a lot of happy sailors. Sunday was more like Friday with heavy clouds and 7-9 m/s and we switched back to the heavy jib. The boat speed was much better for us, but the starts weren’t good enough. In the first race NED 350 came on port and completely ruined our start. To prevent collision, we had to tack away in the last minute and lost all momentum. We finished 12th in both races that day and ended up 13th out of 24. It was total foreign domination, three Dutch boats on the podium and Jørgen Ring at the 4th place. This gives the Norwegian teams something to think about and means a great potential for improvement. We need to sail more in big fleets and set together more stable teams. Ronny Rognhaugen, president NYK NOR 71 Yme

Amazingly, we got something like a dozen of these quite hard used craft and a Boston Whaler using this brash technique. The boats were rather fragile and the kids (as with all new to sailing kids) didn’t understand at first that don’t have brakes. A couple of us carried fiberglass webbing and resin in our cars as boats had to be fixed and repaired every afternoon to be ready for the next day. Well, we grew like a patch of weeds. We did introduce some students into the adult fleet but that was a big step. Lo and behold! We got two or three Ynglings as a transition boat and our racing program for the older children was started. As I remember, all of the Ynglings were donated, also or the money for their purchase.
