March 4, 2006 at ABYC 3 PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT From Todd Irving, President and Al Will, Executive Director What a Great Year! We had an extremely busy year on all fronts with growing activity in youth racing, big enrollment in instructor development training, and huge improvements in the results of the Ontario Sailing Team and from other athletes from Ontario. In 2007 we will see the continued evolution of our web-based services with the introduction of CrewBank.ca. This, together with the on-line registration service, will help us better connect to a broader group within our community. If you have any sugges- tions as to how we can better serve our members please email: [email protected] Athlete Development: We were thrilled with the results of our athletes at YOTS and other championships. Our Ontario Sailing Team has really come together under Amy’s leadership. Congratulations to our sail- ors & coaches! Ontario Sailing Championships (including Youth Festival) recorded 1,066 sailors, up from 917 in 2005. Read the report and check out winning skippers of 3 world championships, and two North American Championships. Ontario sailors swept the Canadian Youth Championships with 3 gold med- als, 2 silvers and one bronze; this is one of our benchmarks for our sailing development program. Regatta and Race Management: Our volunteers re-structured our committees in 2006 in order to im- prove both race management and regatta management. A lot of work went into providing a very comprehensive regatta hosting package available on line. In 2006 we ironed out some wrinkles with our on-line regatta registration that proved very positive and all Ontario sailing championships will use this service in 2007. Instructor Development Clinics: We set a new (recent history) high with training 400 dinghy and wind- surfing instructors in 2006 up from 375 in 2005 and 359 in 2004. We are constantly improving in training enough instructors and coaches to meet the demand in Ontario and beyond our borders. A big thank you to our host sites, Amy, Shauna and the Instructor Evaluators for a big job done well. BOOM: BOOM continues to run at capacity, summer 2006 training 481 youth and adults at 18 different sites. These numbers are consistent with the prior 3 years as there is no room for growth without adding another mobile. We have applied to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for funds to add another Pico BOOM mobile and are pleased that both Vanguard Boats and Fogh Marine have come up with the matching support should our Trillium grant be approved. BOOM 2007 sold out in a record 4-hours, and at 7-days the waiting list was filled for our (hopefully) new mobile. Safe Sailing in Camps: This was the last year of our Trillium support of our Safe Sailing in Camps Program. Summer 2006 was again successful with 17 sites/events teaching 372 campers and staff. We have de- veloped a plan on how we can serve our camps without the support of Trillium funds for 2007 by em- ploying more BOOM instructors in May and June. Website Development: CrewBank.ca “The Meeting Place” for sailors is up and running & will be featured at the Boat Show in January 2007. We will be working hard to get as many people signed up prior to the start of the sailing season. The more people that sign up for this free service the more effective it will be. LearnToSail.ca is up and running well. It is a great user friendly site to send new boaters to. Expanding new sites beyond Ontario: We are continuing to work with CYA to try to roll out these pro- jects nationally. By the time you read this report we should have our database integrated with CYA and in 2007 and beyond CYA will work to add all the other provincial sailing associations onto a com- mon databank. Provincial Funding: We are experiencing new funding for athletes and some projects while they cut funding for a base of operations. We do thank the Ministry for support of out athletes and coaches with the Quest for Gold initiatives. Going into the budget cycle we knew they cut back the maximum by $19,780 but, to make matter worse, at the end of August we were informed of a 15% cut ($38,913) in base funding. We will struggle to break-even for March 2007. 4 PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT (cont’d) From Todd Irving, President and Al Will, Executive Director Able Sail Report Currently Ontario has 17 sustainable Able Sail programs across the province. The Ontario Access BOOM Program visited 4 different sites this summer, 2 of those sites in NS helping NSYA promote accessible sail- ing in their province. Check out the full report about our race coach and some blind sailing initiatives. Other Successes: Good work was accomplished by both our Marketing and Fundraising Committees that support all the other efforts. The awards committee was again active and published within this re- port is the 2006 List of Merritt, listing all people that we nominated for various awards throughout the year. Our Governance Committee’s major work was in developing our Conflict of Interest policy and are still working on centralizing all of our policies before Al’s departure. Work has begun on the review of our By-laws with a target to present to the membership prior to our AGM in January 2008. Volunteers and Retiring Directors: Neither our clubs, regattas nor Ontario Sailing could operate without volunteers. You will read the names of hundreds throughout this report that enable Ontario Sailing to accomplish all that we do. Our thanks to all of those people and to our two Directors who will be retir- ing from our Board at our annual general meeting, Clive Berry and Michael Rustom. Executive Director: Al Will informed the Board in September of his plans to retire from Ontario Sailing at the end of March 2007. The Executive Committee was active throughout the fall in finding a replace- ment and are pleased to announce the hiring of Glenn Lethbridge effective March, 2007 Message from Al: The last 12 years have been a great voyage at Ontario Sailing. I have been blessed consistently with great crew (staff) and some great navigators (board). The navigators did a great job in setting the course and respected the role of the competent crew to adjust the sails. I’m proud of our level of service to all our stakeholders and indebted to all of our sponsors, donors and partners that helped along the way. I am sure my path will continue to cross many of yours over the years to come and you can follow my new course at www.alwill.ca Thank you and safe voyage. Looking forward to an exciting 2007!!!! TREASURER’S REPORT From Erin Sinyard, Treasurer Our fiscal year, April 1st 2005 to March 31st, 2006, reflects the financial side of a very busy program year described in this our Annual Report. I am pleased to report a modest operating surplus of $668 as con- trasted to a modest operating deficit of $4,925 from the previous year.
