With live music, short films and awards presentations, this year's awards gala focuses on the musical and film talent coming out of Wairoa. Join us for a night of entertainment, glamour and excitement on the red carpet of East Coast, Aotearoa! On the night: - LIVE MUSIC from international musical trio NRG RISING! - The Māori Futurism audio-visual presentation creating an immersive environment of colour, sound and light - Presentation of the eighth annual Women in Film & Television Mana Wahine Award - Presentation of the second annual Pacific islanders in Film & Television Mana Pasifika Award - Special surprise performances and awards throughout the evening! - Guests are welcomed with complimentary gourmet kai and one complimentary glass of wine - Full cash bar available Tickets to the Wairoa Māori Film Awards Gala are the hot ticket for the commencement of the Matariki season, and we expect this event to sell out. WE ARE THE HALLUCI NATION Music Video A Tribe Called Red 2016 3 min Canada GAS CAN Mattias Graham 2017 15 min Canada A Cree family in 1970s Saskatchewan must ask an old Farmer for help when their car runs out of gas while moving to the city. Long synopsis: Gas Can is a narrative short film (15min) about the cycles of privilege and racism on the prairies. The film follows the story of Anthem, a Cree man moving to the city with his family. Along the way, they run out of gas and Anthem asks an old friend -- the Farmer -- for help. The Farmer agrees, but not unconditionally, and he turns his back on them when they need it most. Anthem and his family are left with no choice but to take back what was promised, and when the Farmer sets off after them in a rage he’s left stuck when his own truck runs out of gas. When Ronnie faces his greatest challenge yet, babysitting his jailed neighbour’s precocious kid, the results are both hilarious and life-affirming. THE GIFT Steven Paul Judd 2017 8 min USA After returning home from his grandfather’s funeral, a young Native American boy opens a mysterious gift bequeathed to him by his grandfather. THREE THOUSAND Assinajaq 2017 14 min Canada Artist Asinnajaq throws a creative net into the National Film Board of Canada’s audiovisual archive, weaving historic footage of the Inuit into a stunningly original animation. In 14 minutes of luminescent cinema, she recasts the past, present and future of the Inuit in a surprising new light (photo, above). NEW TAKEOVER Music Video Stan Walker 2017 4 min NZ Director: Shae Sterling (Māori) ROTO Louise Potiki Bryant (Māori) 2017 8 min NZ Inspired by Lake Wānaka in Te Wai Pounamu, acclaimed artist Louise Potiki Bryant presents a striking dance film that explores our consciousness and emotional state, embodied within the word “roto” meaning both “lake” and “within”. With this film the lake becomes a metaphor for our consciousness, and the surface of the lake is likened to our emotional state. PUORO Komako-Aroha Silver (Māori) 2017 13min NZ A story following the journey of Jerome Kavanagh, a young Māori practitioner of taonga puoro (traditional instruments used in sacred, ritual and healing ceremonies) as he revives ancient ancestral practices in our contemporary world. (documentary) TŪRANGAWAEWAE Neihana Lowe (Māori) 2017 4 min NZ A film that uses spoken word to confront questions about cultural identity. PĀPĀ Ryan Alexander Lloyd (Māori) 2017 7 min NZ A tender portrait of a seemingly elusive father is told through the memories of his daughters. A bold short film with with an original score and sound design by Rosalind Hall (THE SILENT EYE) SHADOW CUT Lucy Suess 2018 13 min NZ Shadow Cut is a portrait of the intimate relationship between artistic and thoughtful fifteen-year-old Boy and his best friend, Girl. Boy and Girl decide to take the long way home from school. But when Girl senses Boy is hiding something, their romp around their small rural town soon exposes their dreams, fears and secrets. Ultimately leading to a late night decision, that could change their lives forever. HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN Any Beyersdorf 2017 15 min Australia single mother living on the fringes of society with her two girls wakes in the night with a unique problem – a light, shining from within her – taking over her life as it takes over her body.
