Allergy Testing Pre-test Procedure Instructions
Allergy testing is done to identify substances called allergens that trigger your allergy symptoms. Test results can better determine how to treat your allergies. However, if certain medications are taken before the tests, the test results will not be accurate.
If you have rashes/hives, continue taking your antihistamines. Discontinue five (5) days before: Discontinue three (3) days before test: • Loratadine (Claritin, Alavert, Dimetapp ND, • Hydroxyzine (Atarax) Wal-itin, Allerclear) • Dimetapp • Cetirizine (Zyrtec, Aller-tec, Alleroff, • Tavist (Clemastine Fumarate) Wal-zyr, Cetiri-D) • Tavist D (Clemastine Fumarate + • Desloratadine (Clarinex) Phenylpropanolamine) • Fexofenadine (Allegra, Allegra-D, • Tylenol PM, Advil PM, and most OTC sleep aids Wal-fex, Aller-fex) • Kronofed • Azelastine (Astelin) • Xyzal (Levocetirizine) • Doxepin (anti-depressant)

You may continue the following: • Prilosec (Omeprazole) • Aerobid (Flunisolide) • Prednisone • Some nasal sprays • Alupent • Aspirin (Fluticasone, Nasarel) (Metaproterenol Sulfate) • Robitussin DM • Entex • Aminophylline • Day Quil • Uniphyl • Aristocort (Triamcinolone) • Nexium • Theophyllines • Atrovent (Ipratropium) • (Slobid, Theodor) Mucinex • Azmacort • • Asthma inhalers (Triamcinolone Acetonide) Guaifenesin • All asthma medications • Singulair (montelukast)
If you are scheduled for a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT):
Discontinue 4 hours before Pro-Air (Albuterol, Ventolin)
Discontinue 12 hours before Serevent, Dulera, Symbicort and/or Advair)
You may continue Qvar, Flovent, Asmanex, Pulmicort and/or Singulair
