NAME: HABIBAH BT NOOR OSMAN CLASS: 6B1 THEME: TRAVEL AND LEISURE TITLE: HISTORIC MALACCA GATHERING Kor Chan Wah’s 1957 190SL,Datuk K.Kumaraendran’s1959 220 SE Ponton and Angus Campos’ 280 SE Cabriolet scored high marks in this tightly contested concours. It was sweet homecoming for Malacca born Ong Kheng Liat when his 1972 280SE 3.5 Coupe and 1986 560 SEC won the Best Class trophies for the Classic and Modern Classic categories respectively. Tan Sri Eugenio Campos‘ Malacca registered 1936 500K Roadster ,which he has valued at RM24 million,topped the Vintage category and won the Best of Show trophy. Event host and sponsor Hatten Square made it a special weekend for the participants with its hospitality at its brand new Hatten Hotel. During the Dutch invasion in 1641,thefortress sustained severe stuctural damage but timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles in the 1800s saved what remains of A’Famosa today. Historic cars from as far as Penang ,Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan ,Johor and Singapore congregated at the Ayer Keroh toll plaza on a rainy Saturday morning before being guided under police escort to greet the Malacca classic car fraternity at this historic location. Fifty cars were lined up in front of the picturesque fort which made it a perfect background for the cars and shutterbugs alike. Before commencement of concours judging at 3pm,the location was already abuzz with thousands of spectators,also local and foreign tourist.About 60 000 people thronged the seaside location despite scorching mid-day weather conditions. The competition was divided into the three traditional categories: Vintage(pre-1959),Classic(1960-1975) and Modern Classic(1976-1987) where the cars were judged based on preparation,condition,correctness,cleanliness and originality. “It’s been a while since we have witnessed a huge number of entries from the Vintage category at a single local event,” said concours director Andrew Suresh,who confirmed that 18 cars were registered under this category. The Malacca contingent presented some rare and interesting cars like a 1965 Volkswagen Type 34 Karmann Ghia,a 1954 Austin A40 Somerset Convertible,a 1959 Datsun 1200 and a 1937 Austin 7 Sport to complement outstation entries such as a 1931 Ford Model A Tudor,a 1939 Alvis 12/70 Tourer,a 1947MGYA,a 1953 MG-YF and a 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster. Also equally tantalising were a pair of Peugeots-a 1967 204 Cabriolet and a 1964 403 Sedan,a 1965 BMW 2002,a 1964 Lancia Fulvia S1 Berlina,a 1965Volvo P1800 and a string of MGBs,MG Midgets and Austin Healy Sprites. The Singapore contingent led by Rewind Magazine publisher Eli Solomon was equally impressive with fast models such as a 1969 Porsche 911 Carrera RS(replica),a 1972 MGB GT-S and a 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider. The Modern Classic category featured some big cars like a 1981 Citroen CX Prestige Limousine and a 1987 Rolls- Royce Silver Wraith II. At the and of the show,it was the Mercedes-Benz models that stole the judges’hearts.
