  • Smallcar6309 Giant Road Test Hillman Super Minx Small
HILLMAN SUPER MINX saloon convertible station wagon THE SUPER MINX HAS AN odd place in the British market. Its engine size puts it in the ever- popular medium category among people who think of 1\ litres as big, yet an unusual structural solidity combined with what the trade calls a complete specification jacks its price up out of the usual range. In fact it fights against one of the walnut-encrusted products of the Group's own badge-engineers, the ageing Singer Gazelle, as well as Standard-Triumph's equally draw• ing-room Vitesse 6. Accordingly it must get its sales on deep-down worth rather than surface appeal. An uncommonly solid and heavy and apparently very rigid steel monocoque structure makes a fine basis. Rootes has been building integral body-chassis units for a long time and this one, more than most in our experience, shows the benefit of careful and progressive development. All three basic body styles use the same steel pan and the same box structure and sub- frame forward of the scuttle. The small car convertible, partly because it has two very wide doors instead of four relatively less weakening ones but largely because it lacks the sheet steel roof on which chassis engineers usually rely for so much rigidity, carries quite a lot of extra metal in the lower platform in the form of welded-up crossmembers and box bracings. The idea is that this local beefing should compensate for loss of strength elsewhere. Rootes has obviously been care• ful from the start to banish road- excited body noise in the form of resonance and wheel rumble.

Stewart Lone discussed the impact which the introduction of the motor car had on Japan’s urban society in the 1920s, especially in the neighbourhood of the city of Kyoto. By way of contrast, Christopher Madeley traced the relationship between Nissan (and its predecessors) and the British motor industry, starting with the construction of the first cars in 1912 by the Kaishinsha Company, using chassis imported from Swift of Coventry. July 2005 Abstracts Lone: The 1920s saw the emergence in Kansai of modern industrial urban living with the development of the underground, air services; wireless telephones, super express trains etc. Automobiles dominated major streets from the early 1920s in the new Age of Speed. Using Kyoto city as an example, the article covers automobile advertising, procedures for taxis, buses and cars and traffic safety and regulation. Madeley: Nissan Motor Company had a longer connection with the British industry than any other Japanese vehicle manufacturer.

'BELCO' AUTOMOTIVE COLOUR SERVICE This list shows the production colours used by British Car Manufacturers since Autumn 1956. It also shows colours for certain imported cars which are in popular use in the United Kingdom. Within each year the colours are arranged according to Car Manufacturer and Model and the 'Belco' reference number is shown against each. Reference numbers for Metallic Finishes are prefixed P031. Many of the colours shown are in the 'Belco' Ready Mixed Range, which is adjusted from time to time to cover all popular colours. Details are given in frequent issues of the 'Belco' Ready Mixed Leaflet. These colours are matched to the Motor Manufacturers patterns and can be obtained immediately from stock. To match other colours, Basic Colours and Reduced Tinters should be used in the proportions given in the 'Belco' Mixing Scheme Handbook. Mixing formulae are also printed on the reverse of each 'Belco' colour chip.
