He attended Ohio Miltary Institute, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Cincinnati Law School. In the early days of automobiles, he designed two cars, but neither got into production. In the 1920s he organized the Crosley Corporation to produce a well-known radio. He also developed a refrigerator with shelves in the doors, the Shelvadoor. In the 1930s Crosley was a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. He owned the Cincinnati Reds and radio station WLW. In 1939 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Crosley introduced the Crosley Automobile, "the forgotten man's car." It was small, priced at between $349 and $450, and powered by an air-cooled engine. Cannonball Baker drove a Crosley 6,517 miles cross-country, with a gasoline consumption of 50.4 mpg. A total of 5,757 Crosleys were sold before World War II halted production. During the war Crosley developed a Jeep-like vehicle called the PUP, and a four-cylinder engine used for refrigeration and other non-automotive purposes.

  • Wessex Ways’ February 2020
WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED 1971 www.wvpc.org.uk ‘WESSEX WAYS’ FEBRUARY 2020 VEHICLE OF THE MONTH The Austin Cambridge (sold as A40, A50, A55, and A60) is a motor car range produced by the Austin Motor Company, in several generations, from September 1954 through to 1971 as cars and to 1973 as light commercials. It replaced the A40 Somerset and was entirely new, with modern unibody construction. The range had two basic body styles with the A40, A50, and early A55 using a traditional rounded shape and later A55 Mark IIs and A60s using Pininfarina styling. The A40 number was re-used on a smaller car (the Austin A40 Farina) from 1958 to 1968, and the Cambridge name had previously been used to designate one of the available body styles on the pre-war 10 hp range. The Austin Cambridge was initially offered only with a four-passenger, four-door saloon body, although a few pre-production two-door models were also made. It had a modern body design with integrated wings and a full-width grille. Independent suspension was provided at the front by coil springs and wishbones while a live axle with anti-roll bar was retained at the rear. A van derivative introduced in November 1956 and a coupé utility (pick up) introduced in May 1957 and remained available until 1974, some three years after the demise of the cars on which they had been based. A40 CAMBRIDGE A 1.2-litre straight-four pushrod engine B-Series engine based on the one used in the previous Austin Somerset (although sharing no parts) powered the new Austin Cambridge.

As any Crosley enthusiast (automobile or radio) will tell you, Powel Crosley Jr. made millions by introducing the world’s first affordable radio receiver in 1921, followed by what would become the world’s most powerful radio station, WLW.

Stewart Lone discussed the impact which the introduction of the motor car had on Japan’s urban society in the 1920s, especially in the neighbourhood of the city of Kyoto. By way of contrast, Christopher Madeley traced the relationship between Nissan (and its predecessors) and the British motor industry, starting with the construction of the first cars in 1912 by the Kaishinsha Company, using chassis imported from Swift of Coventry. July 2005 Abstracts Lone: The 1920s saw the emergence in Kansai of modern industrial urban living with the development of the underground, air services; wireless telephones, super express trains etc. Automobiles dominated major streets from the early 1920s in the new Age of Speed. Using Kyoto city as an example, the article covers automobile advertising, procedures for taxis, buses and cars and traffic safety and regulation. Madeley: Nissan Motor Company had a longer connection with the British industry than any other Japanese vehicle manufacturer.

  • Iniezioneiniezione the Newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
IniezioneIniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Summer in the NW Words by Fred Russell It’s hard to imagine how an act of animal cruelty can lead to a number of wonderful things, but that is exactly what we discovered on our 2014 NWARC Annual Summer Drive. After our driver / navigator talk in a large sunny parking lot in Woodin- ville, our leaders, Ken & Louisa Case, handed out the route guides and gimmick questions, and we headed out. Just under 20 cars joined in for the run as we wandered east toward Duvall long wooded roads with a little construction going on. We then turned north along the scenic West Snoqualmie Valley Road with the valley floor, farms, and the placid river on our right side. Eventually, we turned right over the river to follow Tualco Road past flower farms, the former Wash State Penitentiary Photos by Gordy Hyde Honor farm, and a rural tractor show. Another couple turns and we were on Ben Howard Road as it twists its way along the south side of the Skykomish River to the town of Sultan. As we left Sultan, we again found back roads but this time we wound our way to a gate at Pasado’s Safe Haven. Our guide met us at the gate as we entered. Our walking tour commenced and we stopped at the first enclosure. Two huge pigs greeted us as our host petted them and told of their story. Across from the pigs, a couple donkeys enjoyed a field with shade, sun, water, and a nice shed.
